Chapter 2: The Woman Nobody Recognized
The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.
I stared at the ceiling of my small bedroom, listening to the rain hitting the window.
Getting fired should have scared me more.
Instead, I felt strangely calm.
Maybe because I knew I had done the right thing.
My mother noticed immediately when I walked into the kitchen.
She was pouring coffee into a travel mug before her morning shift.
“Something happened,” she said.
I stopped.
“How do you know?””
“Because you have the same face you had when you broke your bike at twelve and tried to fix it yourself.””
I smiled a little.
Then I told her everything.
Not dramatically.
Just the truth.
She listened while standing beside the kitchen counter.
When I finished, she sighed.
“Malik.””
“I know.””
“You need a job.””
“I know.””
“But…”
She looked at me.
“And?””
I shrugged.
“And I’d rather lose a job than become someone who watches people get hurt and does nothing.””
My mother was quiet.
Then she smiled.
“Your grandfather would have said the same thing.””
That helped.
A little.
By noon, I was walking through Riverside looking for another mechanic shop that might hire me.
Most places wanted experience.
Most places saw seventeen and stopped listening.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A calm woman’s voice responded.
“Is this Malik Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“This is Evelyn Carter.””
I frowned.
I didn’t know anyone named Evelyn Carter.
“Can I help you?””
There was a short pause.
“I wanted to thank you.””
My steps slowed.
“Thank me for what?””
“For yesterday.””
I stopped walking.
The street noise suddenly felt distant.
The elderly woman.
The scooter.
The repair.
“You were the woman from the shop.””
“Yes.””
I smiled.
“I’m glad the scooter is working.””
“It is.””
“Good.””
Another pause.
Then she said something I didn’t expect.
“You should know something about me, Malik.””
I waited.
“My name is Evelyn Carter, and I am the founder and CEO of Carter Mobility Technologies.””
I stared at the sidewalk.
I had heard that name before.
Everyone in Pennsylvania had.
Carter Mobility Technologies was one of the largest medical transportation companies in the region.
They built mobility equipment.
They owned rehabilitation centers.
They had thousands of employees.
I laughed quietly.
“I’m sorry, what?””
“I understand why you’re surprised.””
“You were just…?””
“An old woman with a broken scooter?””
I didn’t answer.
She laughed softly.
“Yes. That is exactly what I wanted people to see.””
I leaned against a brick wall.
“Why?””
“Because people reveal who they are when they think nobody important is watching.””
Her words stayed with me.
Then my expression changed.
“Wait.””
“What?””
“Did you tell Mr. Reed anything?””
“No.””
“Then how did he know who you were?””
The silence on the phone felt different.
More serious.
“I didn’t tell him.””
I looked down.
“Then why are you calling me?””
“Because I have been looking for someone with your character.””
I didn’t know what to say.
“I’m just a mechanic apprentice.””
“No, Malik. You are someone who saw a person being treated unfairly and accepted a consequence instead of staying quiet.””
I swallowed.
Nobody had ever described me that way.
Not even myself.
Then Evelyn said:
“I would like to offer you an opportunity.””
I looked around the busy street.
“What kind of opportunity?””
“A position at Carter Mobility.””
I almost laughed.
“Ma’am, I don’t even have a high school diploma yet.””
“I’m not hiring you because of a diploma.””
“Then why?””
“Because yesterday, you fixed more than a scooter.””
I stayed silent.
She continued.
“You reminded me why my company exists.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Hope.
But before I could answer, she added one sentence that changed everything.
“However, before you accept, there is something you need to know about Calvin Reed.””
My smile disappeared.
“What about him?””
Evelyn’s voice became quieter.
“Your former boss was not the only person watching what happened in that shop.””
I stood completely still.
“Who else was there?””
A pause.
Then she answered.
“Someone who has been investigating him for months.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Investigating him for what?””
The line went silent.
May you like
And then Evelyn said a name I never expected to hear.
“Malik… you need to see what we found inside his repair records.””
