Chapter 5: The Secret Evelyn Buried

I stared at the envelope for almost ten minutes before touching it.

It sat on the reception desk like it belonged there.

Like it had been waiting for me.

The security guards had already returned to their positions, but I could feel their eyes watching me.

Not because they thought I was dangerous.

Because they knew something had just changed.

I finally picked up the envelope.

It was heavier than I expected.

Inside was a single photograph and a folded piece of paper.

I opened the paper first.

There were only six words written on it.

*Ask her about Daniel Carter.*

I froze.

Evelyn’s last name.

Carter.

I looked at the photograph.

A young man stood beside a much younger Evelyn.

She looked different.

Her hair was darker.

Her smile was bigger.

The man beside her looked like someone who trusted the world.

At the bottom of the photograph was a date.

Ten years earlier.

My chest tightened.

I had no idea who Daniel Carter was.

But I knew one thing.

Victor Hale wanted me to ask.

And that meant he wanted a reaction.

I folded the paper and walked upstairs.

Evelyn was inside her office reviewing documents.

She looked up when I entered.

“Malik?””

I placed the envelope on her desk.

Her expression changed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You saw him.””

I nodded.

“Victor Hale.””

The room became silent.

Evelyn slowly stood.

“What did he say?””

I didn’t answer right away.

I watched her face.

For the first time since I met her, she looked afraid.

“He told me to ask you about Daniel Carter.””

The color disappeared from her face.

She sat down.

“Where did you hear that name?””

“From him.””

I placed the photograph on the desk.

She looked at it.

And I saw something I had not expected.

Pain.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“Who was he?”” I asked.

Evelyn picked up the photograph carefully.

“My son.””

The answer hit harder than I expected.

I sat down slowly.

“You have a son?””

“Had.””

The word was quiet.

But it carried years of sadness.

“What happened?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

For several seconds, she didn’t speak.

Then she finally said:

“Daniel was the reason Carter Mobility exists today.””

I listened.

“He was twenty-four when he started designing affordable mobility equipment. He believed older people and disabled people deserved better than overpriced machines built only for profit.””

She smiled faintly.

“He was stubborn.””

I smiled a little.

“Sounds familiar.””

She looked at me.

For a moment, there was warmth in her eyes.

Then it disappeared.

“Ten years ago, Daniel discovered something.””

“What?””

“He found that several companies were manipulating repair costs and equipment prices.””

My stomach tightened.

“Like Reed’s Auto?””

“Yes.””

I leaned forward.

“Victor was involved?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

And that silence told me enough.

“Why didn’t you expose him?””

Her hands tightened around the photograph.

“Because I tried.””

The room went quiet.

“I gathered evidence. I contacted attorneys. I prepared everything.””

“What happened?””

“Before I could release it, Daniel disappeared.””

I stopped.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

The word felt heavy.

“His car was found outside the city. His phone was missing. Nobody could explain where he went.””

I didn’t know what to say.

“I’m sorry.””

Evelyn nodded.

“For ten years, I searched for answers.””

“And Victor Hale?””

“He knew Daniel.””

“How?””

“They worked together before Daniel discovered what was happening.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“So Victor knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why is he warning me?””

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

“Because he knows you found something.””

I stood.

“This is why he came here?””

“Probably.””

I walked toward the window.

Everything connected now.

The fake repairs.

The elderly customers.

The records.

Victor’s warning.

But one question remained.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because I didn’t want your kindness to become your burden.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“When you helped me, you had no idea who I was. You weren’t trying to impress me. You weren’t trying to gain anything.””

She looked at me.

“That mattered.””

I understood.

She was testing the world.

And I had accidentally passed.

But now?

Now I was involved.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

My heart dropped.

It was a picture.

A picture of my mother leaving her workplace.

Taken that morning.

Below it was a message.

*Some people should learn when to stop helping strangers.*

I couldn’t breathe for a second.

Evelyn saw my face.

“What happened?””

I handed her the phone.

Her expression hardened.

“Marcus.””

The man from earlier entered immediately.

“Yes?””

“Lock down the building.””

Marcus looked at the message.

His face changed.

“Is this from Hale?””

“We don’t know.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“My mother.””

Her voice softened.

“Malik, listen to me.””

I tried to stay calm.

“I don’t care about their investigation anymore.””

She understood immediately.

“My family matters.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Then she picked up her phone.

“I know exactly what we’re going to do.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“We’re going to stop running.””

Before I could ask what she meant, Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face turned pale.

“What?””

He listened for a few seconds.

Then looked at Evelyn.

“We found Daniel.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at him.

“Found him?””

Marcus lowered the phone.

“He’s alive.””

The room went completely silent.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Where?””

Marcus looked at me.

“He’s been hiding under another name.””

My heartbeat raced.

“Why?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because he wasn’t hiding from Victor Hale.””

May you like

He looked at Evelyn.

“He was hiding from someone inside your own company.””
