Chapter 6: The Man Who Came Back

Evelyn didn’t move.

Not for several seconds.

The woman who controlled a company with thousands of employees.

The woman who negotiated million-dollar deals.

The woman who always seemed prepared.

She just stood there.

Frozen.

“Inside my company?”” she whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“We traced the old records. Someone deleted parts of Daniel’s investigation from the company database.””

Evelyn looked confused.

“But only three people had access.””

Marcus didn’t say anything.

She already knew.

“No.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“No, that’s impossible.””

I looked between them.

“Who?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“My former business partner.””

“Who was that?””

She looked at me.

“Victor Hale.””

The room felt smaller.

“He was your partner?””

“Yes.””

“And now he’s threatening you?””

Evelyn nodded.

I thought about the man who stood in the lobby.

The calm voice.

The expensive suit.

The fake kindness.

He wasn’t just a businessman.

He was someone who had been connected to this story from the beginning.

“What happened between you two?””

Evelyn walked back to her desk.

“Ten years ago, Daniel and I discovered that Victor had been hiding financial information from our board.””

“What kind of information?””

“Payments.””

“To who?””

“We never found out.””

Marcus interrupted.

“Until now.””

He opened a file on his tablet.

A list appeared.

My eyes moved down the page.

Names.

Companies.

Dates.

Then I saw something.

“Reed’s Auto.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Calvin was working with him.””

“Looks like it.””

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was my mother.

I answered immediately.

“Mom?””

Her voice sounded confused.

“Malik? Why are you asking if I’m okay?””

I looked at Evelyn.

“What?””

“I just got a strange call asking about you.””

My heart stopped.

“What did they ask?””

“They wanted to know if you were working with someone named Evelyn Carter.””

I stood up.

“Mom, listen to me. If anyone asks you anything else—”

“Malik, what is happening?””

I hated hearing fear in her voice.

“Nothing. I just need you to be careful.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“Son, I’m already careful.””

I closed my eyes.

She shouldn’t have to be.

Not because I helped someone.

Not because I did the right thing.

After the call ended, Evelyn walked closer.

“Your mother can stay here.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She can stay at my guest residence until this is over.””

“I can’t ask you to do that.””

“You didn’t.””

She looked at me.

“I’m offering.””

I wanted to refuse.

But then I remembered the picture.

The message.

Someone watching my family.

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

That afternoon, Evelyn arranged security for my mother.

Then she made another call.

The kind of call that changed everything.

“Bring him here.””

I knew exactly who she meant.

Daniel.

For hours, nobody spoke much.

Everyone waited.

Then, just before sunset, the elevator doors opened.

A man stepped out.

He was older than the photograph.

His hair had gray streaks.

There was a tiredness in his eyes that told me he had spent years carrying something heavy.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“Daniel?””

The man looked at her.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then he whispered:

“Mom.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

The next second, she crossed the room and hugged him.

I looked away.

It felt like witnessing something private.

Something broken finally being repaired.

After several minutes, Daniel sat down with us.

He looked at me.

“You’re Malik.””

I nodded.

“How do you know?””

He smiled slightly.

“Because you’re the reason I came back.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“She told me about you.””

I didn’t understand.

“She found me months ago?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

Daniel reached into his jacket and placed an old notebook on the table.

“My father kept records.””

I looked at him.

“Your father?””

He nodded.

“Before he died, he left me evidence about Victor.””

Evelyn opened the notebook.

Inside were pages of handwritten notes.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Then Daniel pointed to the final page.

A single sentence was written there.

*The person who betrayed us was never outside the company.*

Evelyn stared at the words.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“I know.””

“Who was it?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he turned the page.

There was one name.

A name that made Evelyn step backward.

Because it belonged to someone she trusted for ten years.

Someone who had been beside her every day.

Daniel whispered:

“The person who destroyed our family…”

May you like

He pointed at the page.

“…is the person standing closest to you right now.””
