Chapter 7: The Betrayal Inside The Walls

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The notebook remained open on the table.

The name sat there like a wound that refused to close.

I looked at Evelyn.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t shouting.

That would have been easier.

Instead, she looked like someone who had just watched a part of her life collapse.

“Say it again,” she whispered.

Daniel looked down.

“Mom…”

“Say the name.””

His jaw tightened.

Then he finally spoke.

“Marcus Vale.””

The room went silent.

I looked toward the door.

Marcus.

The man who had been helping us.

The man who had locked down the building.

The man who had warned us about Victor.

I felt my stomach twist.

“That can’t be right,” Evelyn said.

Daniel looked at her sadly.

“I wish it wasn’t.””

“He has worked beside me for ten years.””

“I know.””

“He helped me rebuild this company after you disappeared.””

“I know.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became firmer.

“There has to be another explanation.””

Daniel pointed to the notebook.

“There is evidence.””

I leaned closer.

The pages were filled with handwritten notes.

Dates.

Meetings.

Payments.

Names of companies.

But one page stood out.

A list of transfers.

At the bottom was a signature.

Marcus Vale.

“He wasn’t just helping Victor,” Daniel said.

“He was covering for him.””

Evelyn slowly sat down.

I could see the memories running through her mind.

Every meeting.

Every conversation.

Every moment she trusted him.

Then the door opened.

All three of us turned.

Marcus walked in.

The timing was too perfect.

He stopped when he saw Daniel.

For the first time, his confident expression disappeared.

“Daniel.””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“What happened?””

She stared at him.

“You tell me.””

His eyes moved to the notebook.

Then back to her.

And that was enough.

He knew.

“You found it.””

Those three words changed everything.

I stood immediately.

“You knew?””

Marcus looked at me.

Not angry.

Almost disappointed.

“Malik…”

“No.””

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“You knew all along?””

Evelyn slowly rose.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“I can explain.””

She laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Explain what?””

Marcus took a step forward.

“Everything I did was to protect this company.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

Daniel pointed at the notebook.

“You helped Victor erase my investigation.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“I was trying to stop something worse.””

“What could be worse than betrayal?””

Marcus looked away.

That hesitation told us there was more.

“What aren’t you telling us?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus sighed.

“I didn’t start this.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He walked toward the table.

“Victor Hale was never the person with the most power.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then who was?””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“The person who funded everything.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You’re talking about…”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“Who?””

Marcus slowly said:

“The Carter family investor group.””

Evelyn froze.

“My investors?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Marcus said quietly.

“It’s exactly what happened.””

I felt overwhelmed.

The story kept getting bigger.

A repair scam became a company investigation.

A company investigation became a family secret.

And now the people who built the company were fighting against the people who controlled it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” Evelyn asked.

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer surprised me.

“You?””

He looked at me.

“Yes, Malik.””

His voice was quieter.

“You think powerful people are never afraid. But power doesn’t protect you from everyone.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“You still betrayed us.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I made a mistake ten years ago.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“What mistake?””

“I believed I could control Victor.””

The room became silent.

“I thought I could use his connections to protect the company. I thought I could keep the damage contained.””

He looked at Daniel.

“But then Daniel disappeared.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And you stayed quiet.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked devastated.

“Why?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because I was scared nobody would believe me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then suddenly, the lights went out.

The entire building went dark.

A second later, alarms started ringing.

Everyone froze.

Marcus immediately moved toward the door.

“Everyone stay here.””

A loud crash came from downstairs.

I heard footsteps.

Fast footsteps.

Someone was inside.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“They know.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the security system screens turned on.

One by one.

Every monitor showed the same image.

The lobby.

And standing there was Victor Hale.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then he smiled.

A voice came through the speakers.

“Evelyn.””

Everyone stared.

Victor continued.

“You always were good at finding lost things.””

Evelyn stepped closer to the screen.

“Victor.””

His smile widened.

“But you never learned something important.””

“What?””

“Sometimes when you find the truth…”

A pause.

The screen changed.

A second camera appeared.

My blood ran cold.

It showed my mother.

Inside the guest residence.

May you like

Victor’s voice continued.

“Someone else pays the price.””
