Chapter 7: The Name Hidden Inside the Helmet
Sam stopped breathing.
That was the only way I could describe it.
He stared at the photograph on Ray’s phone as if the screen had reached through time and grabbed him by the throat.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The room inside Dawson Cycle felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Because written inside that helmet lining was a name that should have stayed buried forever.
*Daniel Reed.*
Sam’s son.
The man he lost eight years earlier.
The man whose death started everything.
Ray held the phone in front of him.
“Sam.””
No answer.
“Sam, look at me.””
Slowly, the old man lifted his eyes.
There was something broken in them.
Not sadness.
Something deeper.
Something that came from carrying pain for too long.
“That’s not possible,” he whispered.
Ray’s expression softened.
“What isn’t?””
Sam pointed at the picture.
“That helmet.””
His voice shook.
“That helmet belonged to Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Officer Daniels looked between them.
“Explain.””
Sam didn’t move.
“I buried it.””
Ray frowned.
“What?””
“I buried that helmet with him.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“You mean…”
Sam nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Nobody spoke.
Because there were only two possibilities.
Either Sam was wrong.
Or someone had taken something from a grave.
And somehow, the second option felt even worse.
Ray lowered the phone.
“Where is Ethan?””
The message had said they found him.
I still didn’t know what that meant.
But Ray’s voice told me everything.
He wasn’t asking because he wanted answers.
He was asking because he was afraid of what those answers would be.
Sam looked at the phone.
“Call him.””
Ray already was.
The call connected immediately.
“Ethan.””
A pause.
Then a voice.
Older than Ray’s.
Tired.
“Ray.””
The entire room listened.
“You’re at my house,” Ray said.
Silence.
Then Ethan answered:
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
“I was hoping you’d ask that.””
Ray looked angry.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I know about the helmet.””
Everyone froze.
Ray looked at Sam.
Then back at the phone.
“How?””
Ethan exhaled.
“Because I brought it.””
Nobody moved.
The confession came so easily.
Almost too easily.
Ray’s face changed.
“You brought it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Silence.
Then Ethan said:
“Because I thought I was saving your life.””
Sam stepped forward.
Ray looked at him.
“Put him on speaker.””
Ray did.
“Ethan,” Sam said.
The other end went quiet.
Then:
“Who is that?””
Sam’s face hardened.
“You know exactly who I am.””
A long silence.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Sam Reed.””
Hearing his name said like that made my skin crawl.
Not with fear.
With recognition.
Ethan knew him.
Ray looked between them.
“You two know each other?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“I didn’t know he was with you.””
Sam stared at the phone.
“You knew about Daniel.””
The silence that followed was the loudest sound I had ever heard.
Ray’s expression changed.
“Ethan?””
His brother didn’t answer.
“Ethan, what did he mean?””
Finally, Ethan said:
“I found the files.””
Ray frowned.
“What files?””
“The ones Daniel had.””
Sam closed his eyes.
There it was.
The truth finally beginning to surface.
“What files?”” Ray repeated.
Ethan sighed.
“The same ones that got him killed.””
Sam looked like someone had punched him.
“You knew?””
“I found them three months ago.””
Ray’s voice rose.
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Ray laughed bitterly.
“By hiding everything?””
“Yes.””
That answer shocked everyone.
Even Ray.
Ethan continued.
“You think I wanted you involved?””
“I was already involved!””
“No,” Ethan said.
His voice became sharper.
“You weren’t.””
A pause.
“Not until someone put that helmet in your hands.””
Ray looked at the broken helmet.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan took a breath.
“The helmet wasn’t meant to kill you.””
Sam looked up.
“What?””
“The tracker was real.””
Everyone froze.
“But the trap wasn’t the helmet itself.””
Ray’s face tightened.
“Then what was it?””
Ethan answered:
“The person who wanted to know if you were connected to Daniel.””
Sam stepped closer to the phone.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel found something.””
“What?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then said:
“A list.””
Sam went completely still.
“What list?””
“The names of people involved.””
Ray looked confused.
“People involved in what?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet.
“The helmet company was only one part.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What else?””
Ethan continued.
“Insurance companies. Private security groups. Testing organizations.””
Ray stared at the phone.
“You’re saying all of them were involved?””
“Yes.””
Sam shook his head.
“No.””
Ethan replied:
“Yes.””
“No,” Sam repeated.
His voice cracked.
“Daniel never told me that.””
“Because he didn’t trust anyone.””
Those words hurt Sam.
I saw it.
“You were his uncle,” Sam said.
Ethan was quiet.
Then:
“I know.””
The pain in his voice surprised me.
For the first time, Ethan didn’t sound like a villain.
He sounded like someone carrying his own regret.
Ray noticed too.
“Ethan.””
“What?””
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then Ethan answered:
“Not at my house anymore.””
Everyone froze.
Ray’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because they found me.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, we heard something in the background.
A door closing.
Footsteps.
Someone else was there.
Ray stood straighter.
“Ethan?””
No answer.
“Ethan!””
The call stayed connected.
Then another voice came through.
A woman.
Calm.
Controlled.
“Hello, Raymond.””
Ray froze.
I watched his face.
He knew that voice.
“Who is this?””
The woman laughed softly.
“Your family has always been terrible at keeping secrets.””
Sam moved closer.
“Who is she?””
Ray didn’t answer.
“Ray?””
The woman continued.
“You should have stayed on your motorcycle.””
Ray’s hand tightened around the phone.
“Where is my brother?””
“Safe.””
“That’s a lie.””
“Maybe.””
The woman sounded amused.
“But you should worry less about Ethan.””
A pause.
Then:
“You should worry about Sam.””
Everyone looked at him.
Sam went pale.
“What?””
The woman continued.
“Because he never told you what Daniel discovered.””
Sam stepped backward.
“That’s not true.””
The woman laughed.
“Oh, Sam.””
Her voice softened.
“You still think grief makes you innocent.””
Ray stared at Sam.
“What is she talking about?””
Sam didn’t answer.
The woman spoke again.
“Ask him what happened the night Daniel died.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
The words hung in the air.
Ray slowly turned toward Sam.
“What happened?””
Sam looked away.
“Ray…”
“No.””
His voice was different.
Colder.
“You don’t get to do this.””
Sam swallowed.
“I wanted to protect him.””
“Protect who?””
Sam didn’t answer.
Ray stepped closer.
“My brother knows something. This woman knows something. Everyone knows something except me.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“And I’m the person everyone is trying to save?””
Sam closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Ray stared.
“Why?””
A tear rolled down Sam’s cheek.
And when he finally spoke, his answer changed everything.
“Because Daniel didn’t die in an accident.””
The room went completely still.
Ray whispered:
“What?””
Sam looked at the broken helmet.
“Your brother is right.””
He looked at Ray.
“The helmet wasn’t the thing that killed him.””
Nobody breathed.
“The person who put it on his head did.””
Ray’s face changed.
“Who?””
Sam looked toward the door.
Like he was afraid someone could hear him.
Then he whispered:
“The person you trusted most.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Not Ray’s.
Not Sam’s.
Mine.
A new message appeared.
From the same unknown number.
One photograph.
One sentence.
The photograph showed Dawson Cycle.
Taken moments ago.
From outside.
And standing beside the front door…
was Ray Dawson’s brother, Ethan.
May you like
The message said:
*“He never left.””*
