Chapter 10: The Memory I Was Never Supposed To Have

I stared at Victor Hale standing in the doorway of Dawson Cycle.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man whose name had followed us through every secret, every lie, every warning.

The man who somehow knew things about me that I didn’t even know about myself.

“You were there the night Daniel died.””

His words repeated in my head.

Not like a sentence.

Like a door opening.

A door I had spent years keeping locked.

I gripped the note tighter.

“Who are you?””

Victor smiled.

Not because the question surprised him.

Because he expected it.

“That’s not the question you should be asking.””

Ray stepped between us.

“You don’t get to walk in here and play games.””

Victor looked at him.

“Ray Dawson.””

The way he said Ray’s name bothered me.

Not like he was meeting him.

Like he had studied him.

“Do you know how many people spend their entire lives looking for someone like you?””

Ray’s eyes narrowed.

“Someone like me?””

“Someone who believes doing the right thing is enough.””

Victor stepped inside.

Daniels immediately raised his hand.

“Stop right there.””

Victor looked at the officer.

Then smiled.

“You’re late.””

Daniels frowned.

“For what?””

“For everything.””

The officer’s expression hardened.

“You’re under—”

Victor interrupted.

“Do you really think this is about arresting me?””

Nobody answered.

Because somehow, it wasn’t.

The entire night had never been about Victor being caught.

It had been about Victor making sure we found him.

Sam stepped forward.

His hands were shaking.

“You killed my son.””

Victor looked at him.

For the first time, his smile disappeared.

“No.””

Sam froze.

“No?””

Victor tilted his head.

“Daniel killed himself.””

The room exploded.

Ray moved instantly.

I barely saw it happen.

One second Victor was standing there.

The next, Ray had him against the wall.

“You say his name like that again—”

“Ray!””

Daniels grabbed him.

Sam stood frozen.

Victor didn’t fight back.

That was what scared me.

A man like Victor should have been afraid.

But he wasn’t.

He looked at Ray like he already knew exactly what Ray would do.

“You still don’t understand.””

Ray tightened his grip.

“Understand what?””

Victor looked at him.

“That Daniel wasn’t trying to expose us.””

A pause.

“He was trying to expose you.””

Ray released him slightly.

“What?””

Victor straightened his jacket.

“You think Daniel came here because he trusted you?””

Sam looked furious.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

“He came because he needed the one person everyone believed was harmless.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Caleb.””

My heart dropped.

Ray looked at me.

“What is he talking about?””

I didn’t know.

That was the worst part.

I truly didn’t know.

Victor watched my confusion.

“You really don’t remember.””

I shook my head.

“Remember what?””

Victor looked almost disappointed.

“That’s what they wanted.””

Daniels stepped closer.

“Enough. Start making sense.””

Victor looked around the shop.

“You want the truth?””

Nobody answered.

“You can’t handle it.””

Ray laughed bitterly.

“You don’t know me.””

Victor looked at him.

“I know exactly who you are.””

He pointed at the broken helmet.

“I know what you ride.””

He looked at Sam.

“I know what you lost.””

Then he looked at me.

“And I know what you forgot.””

The words hit differently.

Because everyone else was connected to this story.

But I felt like I was the missing piece.

The one nobody had told.

“Why don’t I remember Daniel?”” I asked.

Victor’s expression changed.

A small crack.

Something almost like guilt.

“Because you were drugged.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Victor nodded.

“The night Daniel died, you saw something you weren’t supposed to see.””

My hands went cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Ray.

He looked confused.

“I would have known.””

Victor smiled.

“You weren’t there long enough.””

A memory flashed.

A parking lot.

Rain.

A motorcycle engine.

A young man’s voice.

My head started hurting.

I grabbed the counter.

Ray noticed.

“Caleb?””

I closed my eyes.

And suddenly…

I remembered.

Not everything.

Just pieces.

Daniel standing outside Dawson Cycle.

A frightened expression.

A folder in his hands.

A sentence.

“You need to take this somewhere safe.””

My breath caught.

I opened my eyes.

“Daniel was here.””

Nobody spoke.

Sam looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“I don’t know.””

“You do.””

Victor’s voice was quiet.

“You just buried it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because your mind does what it has to do when someone tries to destroy it.””

Daniels stared at Victor.

“You drugged him?””

Victor didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Ray stepped forward.

“What did you do to Caleb?””

Victor looked at him.

“Nothing.””

Ray’s face darkened.

“Try again.””

“I erased a memory.””

The room went silent.

Sam whispered:

“How?””

Victor looked at him.

“You know how.””

Sam’s expression changed.

Because he did.

Ray noticed.

“Sam?””

The old man looked away.

“What?””

“You knew about this?””

Sam didn’t answer.

Ray’s voice sharpened.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“Don’t lie.””

Sam closed his eyes.

“I knew something happened.””

My chest tightened.

“How?””

Sam looked at me.

“Because Daniel called me after he left here.””

“What did he say?””

Sam swallowed.

“He said he found someone who could help.””

I stared.

“Me?””

Sam nodded.

“Yes.””

I sat down.

The world felt unreal.

Eight years of my life.

A person I didn’t remember.

A conversation I didn’t remember.

A danger I didn’t know I survived.

Victor walked closer.

“Daniel knew he was running out of time.””

Ray stared at him.

“Then why kill him?””

Victor looked at him.

“I didn’t.””

Sam stepped forward.

“Liar.””

Victor sighed.

“You still think everything is simple.””

“Did you kill my son?””

Victor looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I know who did.””

Everyone froze.

Ray stared.

“Who?””

Victor looked toward the front window.

Then back at us.

“Someone who is still trying to protect the truth.””

Nobody understood.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*“Don’t listen to Victor.””*

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

My hands went numb.

It was an old picture.

Taken eight years ago.

Outside Dawson Cycle.

In the photo:

Daniel stood beside me.

Alive.

Smiling.

And standing behind us…

was Ray Dawson.

But the part that made my blood run cold wasn’t that Ray was there.

It was what was written on the back.

A handwritten note.

I turned the phone around.

Everyone saw it.

The message said:

*“The person who betrayed Daniel was never Victor.””*

Ray looked at the photo.

Then at me.

Then at the words.

Nobody spoke.

Until Sam whispered:

“Oh God.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face had lost all color.

“Because if this is true…”

May you like

He stared at Ray.

“…then Daniel trusted the wrong brother.””
