Chapter 12: The Man Who Held the Missing Piece

The person standing in the doorway didn’t look dangerous.

That was the first thing that made him terrifying.

Danger usually announced itself.

A weapon.

A threat.

A raised voice.

But this man walked into Dawson Cycle with the same calm expression he had worn a thousand times before.

The same expression he used when fixing a difficult engine.

The same expression he used when handing customers their keys.

The same expression he used when telling me everything would be fine.

Frank Miller.

Ray’s oldest friend.

My former boss.

The man who had worked beside us for years.

The man who had taught me how to rebuild my first motorcycle engine.

Ray stared at him.

“Frank.””

Frank closed the door behind him.

The sound echoed through the shop.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ray’s voice changed.

“Why are you here?””

Frank looked around.

At Sam.

At Victor.

At the broken helmet.

Then at me.

His eyes stopped on the note in my hand.

“You remembered.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

Frank looked at me.

“Yes.””

Those two words hurt more than I expected.

Because Frank wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t someone from a photograph.

He was someone I trusted.

“You knew I lost my memory?””

Frank nodded.

“I knew parts of it.””

Ray stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Frank looked at him.

“It means I knew what happened that night.””

The room went silent.

Ray’s jaw tightened.

“You were there?””

Frank didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

Sam looked at him with disbelief.

“You.””

Frank looked at Sam.

“You always were good at finding the wrong people.””

Sam’s expression changed.

“You worked with Victor.””

Frank smiled sadly.

“I worked against him.””

Victor laughed.

A cold, quiet laugh.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Victor shook his head.

“Don’t let him rewrite history.””

Frank’s eyes moved toward Victor.

“You’re still alive.””

“Yes.””

“You should have stayed dead.””

The tension between them was immediate.

Not new.

Old.

A fight that had started years ago and never ended.

Ray looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Frank sighed.

“I was hoping we’d have more time.””

Ray stepped closer.

“We don’t.””

Frank nodded.

“You’re right.””

He looked at Ray.

“You deserve the truth.””

Finally.

After all the lies.

All the missing pieces.

Someone was going to tell the whole story.

Frank walked toward the counter.

He picked up the broken helmet piece.

“The night Daniel died, he came here.””

Ray looked away.

“I know.””

“No.””

Frank looked at him.

“You know he came here.””

A pause.

“You don’t know what happened after.””

Ray’s face tightened.

“What happened?””

Frank looked at me.

Then at Sam.

Then at Victor.

“Daniel had proof.””

Sam nodded.

“The list.””

Frank shook his head.

“Not just the list.””

He placed the helmet piece down.

“He had a recording.””

Nobody spoke.

“A recording of a conversation.””

Victor’s expression changed slightly.

For the first time all night…

he looked worried.

Ray noticed.

“What conversation?””

Frank looked at Victor.

“The one where Victor admitted everything.””

The room became still.

Victor stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Frank smiled.

“You always say that.””

Victor’s eyes hardened.

“Because it is.””

Frank turned to Daniels.

“You want proof?””

The officer nodded.

“Yes.””

Frank reached into his jacket.

Daniels immediately raised a hand.

“Slowly.””

Frank sighed.

Everyone was suspicious now.

Even the innocent looked guilty.

He pulled out a small storage device.

A tiny black drive.

“This.””

He placed it on the counter.

“Daniel gave this to me.””

Ray stared.

“When?””

“The night he died.””

Sam looked shocked.

“He gave it to you?””

Frank nodded.

“Because he knew he couldn’t trust many people.””

Ray looked angry.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Frank looked at him.

“Because Daniel told me not to.””

Ray froze.

“What?””

“He said if anything happened to him, I couldn’t give it to you.””

“Why?””

Frank looked down.

“Because he thought you were being watched.””

Nobody spoke.

Ray shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Frank looked at him.

“Because the person watching you wasn’t Victor.””

The words hit hard.

Again.

Always another layer.

Ray’s voice became quiet.

“Who was it?””

Frank looked at me.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Frank didn’t say anything.

But his silence answered.

Ray looked at me.

“Caleb?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Frank stepped closer.

“You were never the target.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You were the witness.””

My breathing stopped.

“The camera. The memory. Daniel choosing this shop.””

Frank nodded.

“Daniel knew you saw something.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Frank’s face softened.

“Because I was there when they took it from you.””

The words hit like a punch.

Ray turned.

“What?””

Frank closed his eyes.

“That night, after Daniel left, someone followed him.””

Sam whispered:

“Who?””

Frank looked at Victor.

“His people.””

Victor didn’t react.

That scared me.

Frank continued.

“Daniel realized he was in danger. He came back here.””

He looked around the shop.

“He gave me the drive.””

Ray asked:

“Then what happened?””

Frank looked at me.

“You came in.””

I felt dizzy.

“I did?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“You heard the argument outside.””

My memory flashed.

Rain.

Voices.

Daniel.

Someone yelling.

Frank continued.

“You walked out back.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You saw Daniel and Victor arguing.””

A wave of nausea hit me.

I remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

Victor.

Daniel.

A folder.

And someone else.

Someone standing behind them.

Frank.

“You tried to help.””

I whispered:

“What happened?””

Frank’s expression became heavy.

“Someone hit you.””

Ray’s face changed.

“Who?””

Frank looked toward the door.

Before he could answer…

Victor spoke.

“Tell them.””

Everyone turned.

Victor smiled.

“Tell them who hit Caleb.””

Frank’s jaw tightened.

Ray looked at him.

“Who?””

Frank didn’t answer.

Victor did.

“Your brother.””

The room exploded into silence.

Ray stared.

“Ethan?””

Frank looked away.

And that was enough.

“No.””

Ray shook his head.

“No.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Ethan wasn’t trying to kill Daniel.””

Sam looked confused.

“Then why?””

Victor smiled.

“Because he was trying to save Ray.””

Nobody understood.

Ray looked furious.

“You’re saying Ethan attacked Caleb to protect me?””

Frank finally spoke.

“Yes.””

Ray stared.

“Explain.””

Frank looked exhausted.

“Ethan arrived after Daniel left.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel called him.””

Sam frowned.

“Why would Daniel call Ethan?””

Frank looked at him.

“Because Daniel found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Frank looked at Ray.

“The person controlling everything wasn’t Victor.””

Everyone froze.

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Frank continued:

“Victor was running the operation.””

A pause.

“But someone above him was giving orders.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

Frank looked at the drive.

Then at Ray.

“Someone who knew your family.””

Ray whispered:

“Who?””

Frank picked up the drive.

“Someone who knew exactly how to make you trust them.””

A sound came from the front window.

A car engine.

Everyone turned.

Headlights filled the shop.

Frank’s face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“No.””

Ray looked at him.

“What?””

Frank stared through the glass.

“He followed me.””

Daniels moved toward the door.

“Who?””

Frank whispered:

“The person who owns this whole operation.””

The car stopped outside.

The door opened.

A figure stepped out.

Older.

Well-dressed.

Walking slowly toward Dawson Cycle.

Ray looked through the glass.

Then he froze.

Because the person approaching wasn’t Victor.

Wasn’t Ethan.

Wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone Ray had known his entire life.

Someone whose advice he had trusted.

Someone whose name was written on the old sign hanging above the shop.

May you like

Ray whispered:

“My father.””
