Chapter 14: The Last Words of Daniel Reed
Ray didn’t move after the call ended.
The phone remained pressed against his ear.
Like some part of him was waiting for the voice to come back.
To explain.
To apologize.
To tell him this was all some impossible mistake.
But the screen stayed dark.
The call was gone.
The silence remained.
Then Ray slowly lowered the phone.
“Ethan.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the question.
Everyone knew the name.
Everyone knew the person who had been missing from the room since the beginning.
Sam looked at Ray.
“What did she mean?””
Ray didn’t respond.
Frank did.
“She means Ethan has something.””
Ray looked at him.
“What?””
Frank stared at the floor.
“Daniel’s final message.””
The words landed heavily.
Again.
The same mystery.
The same missing piece.
Daniel’s final words.
The thing everyone had been chasing.
The thing that could explain everything.
Ray’s father looked at Frank.
“You knew.””
Frank’s face tightened.
“I suspected.””
“You had the drive.””
“I had part of it.””
“Part?””
Frank nodded.
“Daniel split the evidence.””
Sam frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he knew one person having everything made them a target.””
I looked at the drive on the counter.
“So what was in the other part?””
Frank looked at Ray.
“His final message.””
Ray’s expression hardened.
“Where is Ethan?””
Nobody answered.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Ethan stood there.
No dramatic entrance.
No weapon.
No disguise.
Just Ethan.
The man who had been the center of every question.
His face looked exhausted.
Like he had already accepted what was coming.
Ray stared.
“You.””
Ethan nodded.
“Me.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Ray walked toward him.
Slowly.
“You lied to me.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Yes.””
“You knew Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about the helmet.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Victor.””
“Yes.””
Each answer was like another wound.
Ray stopped a few feet away.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””
Ray laughed.
A painful sound.
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Ray’s voice broke.
“You don’t know what it feels like to lose someone because people decided you couldn’t handle the truth.””
Ethan looked down.
“I do.””
That stopped Ray.
Ethan continued.
“I lost Daniel too.””
Sam looked at him.
“You weren’t there.””
Ethan looked at Sam.
“I was.””
The room froze.
Sam shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Daniel was alone.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“He wasn’t.””
The old man stepped back.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan took a breath.
“The night Daniel died…”
A pause.
“I was there.””
Nobody spoke.
Ray stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Because I saw what happened.””
“And?””
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“And I saw who caused it.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“Who?””
Ethan looked at Ray’s father.
Then at Victor.
Then finally at himself.
“It was me.””
The room went silent.
“No.””
Ray shook his head immediately.
“No.””
Ethan didn’t look away.
“Yes.””
Sam’s face turned pale.
“What did you do?””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I followed Daniel.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought he was making a mistake.””
Ray stared.
“And?””
“And I confronted him.””
A long silence.
“What did you say?””
Ethan swallowed.
“I told him to stop.””
Sam’s voice trembled.
“You threatened him?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“I begged him.””
Nobody expected that answer.
“I told him he didn’t understand how dangerous these people were.””
Ray frowned.
“Then why did Daniel die?””
Ethan looked up.
“Because someone else arrived.””
The room became tense.
“Who?””
Ethan looked at Victor.
“Victor.””
Victor didn’t deny it.
Sam stepped forward.
“Then why did you say you were responsible?””
Ethan’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because I brought him there.””
A silence.
“I thought I could fix it.””
Ray stared at his brother.
“You led him into a trap.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
More than another lie would have.
Ray stepped back.
“Why keep the message?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Because Daniel gave it to me.””
Sam whispered:
“He trusted you?””
Ethan nodded.
“He knew I made a mistake.””
A tear appeared in his eye.
“But he also knew I could still make it right.””
Ethan reached into his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
But he slowly pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Damaged.
He placed it on the counter.
“This is what everyone wanted.””
Ray stared at it.
“The last words.””
Ethan nodded.
Ray didn’t touch it.
“Why now?””
Ethan looked around the room.
“Because there’s nothing left to protect.””
Frank looked at him.
“Open it.””
Ray picked up the envelope.
His hands shook.
Inside was a small piece of paper.
Handwritten.
Daniel’s handwriting.
Ray read silently.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at Sam.
Then at me.
Then at his father.
Finally, he handed it to me.
I read the first line.
*If you’re reading this, then Ethan finally chose the truth over fear.*
My chest tightened.
I continued.
*Ray is not the person you should blame. He was never part of this.*
Ray closed his eyes.
A breath escaped him.
Relief.
Pain.
Everything at once.
The note continued.
*Victor was never the leader. He was only the person everyone could see.*
I looked at Victor.
His face was unreadable.
The next line made my hands shake.
*The real person behind this was someone I trusted completely.*
Everyone leaned closer.
The final paragraph was short.
Too short.
*I found out who ordered the helmet tests, the tracking system, and the cover-ups. I found out who destroyed families to protect a business.*
Then:
*It was someone who taught me how to ride.*
Ray looked confused.
“Who?””
I turned the page.
There was one final sentence.
*It was the person who called himself my second father.*
Everyone looked at Frank.
Nobody spoke.
Frank’s face changed.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Fear.
Ray stared.
“No.””
Frank took a step back.
“Ray…”
“You.””
Frank didn’t answer.
“You were the one?””
Frank looked broken.
“I didn’t want this.””
Ray’s voice became cold.
“You were like family.””
“I know.””
“You trained me.””
“Yes.””
“You helped build this shop.””
“Yes.””
Ray looked at him.
“And you killed Daniel?””
Frank shook his head.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“I didn’t kill him.””
“Then why does Daniel blame you?””
Frank looked at the note.
Because he knew.
He knew there was no escape anymore.
Finally, he whispered:
“Because I was the one who gave Victor the information.””
The room went silent.
Sam looked horrified.
“You betrayed him.””
Frank nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Frank looked at Ray.
And for the first time all night…
he looked truly ashamed.
“Because I thought I was saving you.””
Ray stared.
“No.””
Frank nodded.
“Yes.””
“I’m done hearing that.””
Frank’s eyes filled with regret.
“The night Daniel came here, he told me everything.””
“What?””
“He told me about the files.””
Frank looked at the drive.
“He told me about your father.””
Ray’s expression changed.
“And?””
Frank swallowed.
“And I made a choice.””
“What choice?””
Frank looked toward the broken helmet.
“I gave Victor Daniel’s location.””
Nobody moved.
Ray whispered:
“Why?””
Frank’s voice cracked.
“Because Victor told me if Daniel exposed everything…”
A pause.
“…you would die next.””
The room fell silent.
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Everyone turned.
Frank looked toward the window.
His face changed.
“What?””
Ray noticed.
“Who is it?””
Frank didn’t answer.
Because outside Dawson Cycle…
under the old sign…
stood a woman.
The same woman from the phone.
The one who had watched everything.
The one who knew every secret.
She looked through the glass.
And smiled.
Then she raised her hand.
Holding something small.
A detonator.
Sam whispered:
“No…”
The woman pressed a button.
The lights went out.
And a countdown appeared on every screen inside Dawson Cycle.
*00:30*
Thirty seconds.
May you like
Then the message appeared.
*“Now everyone remembers.””*
