Chapter 11: The Brother Nobody Suspected

Nobody moved.

Not Ray.

Not Sam.

Not even Victor.

The photograph sat on the counter between us like a loaded weapon.

A single image.

A single accusation.

Eight years of secrets.

And one impossible question.

*Was Ray Dawson the person who betrayed Daniel?*

I looked at Ray.

The man who had spent the entire night trying to protect everyone.

The man who had taken in a homeless stranger instead of letting him get arrested.

The man who had looked at a broken helmet and chosen to believe someone’s warning instead of his own anger.

Could that same man have been the reason Daniel died?

My mind rejected it.

But the photograph existed.

And photographs didn’t lie.

At least, that’s what people always said.

Ray slowly picked up my phone.

He stared at the picture.

His face showed nothing.

No anger.

No denial.

That scared me more than anything.

“Ray,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

“Say something.””

Finally, he looked up.

“I don’t remember this night.””

The room went quiet.

Victor leaned against the doorway.

“Of course you don’t.””

Ray looked at him.

“You think this proves something?””

Victor shrugged.

“I think it proves everyone in this room has been missing pieces.””

Sam stepped closer.

“Stop.””

Victor looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you’re enjoying this.””

A small smile crossed Victor’s face.

“No, Sam.””

His voice lowered.

“I’m watching all of you realize how little you actually know.””

Ray placed the phone down.

“Caleb.””

I looked at him.

“Do you remember taking this photo?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Do you remember Daniel?””

I hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“Pieces.””

Ray nodded slowly.

“What pieces?””

I closed my eyes.

The memory came in fragments.

A rainy night.

A motorcycle parked near the back entrance.

Daniel holding a folder.

His voice.

“You need to trust me.””

I opened my eyes.

“He was scared.””

Sam nodded.

“Yes.””

“He said someone was following him.””

Victor watched me carefully.

“Who?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

But another memory surfaced.

A face.

Not clear.

A voice.

A sentence.

*“Ray can fix this.””*

My stomach tightened.

Ray noticed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“He mentioned you.””

Everyone became still.

“What did he say?”” Ray asked.

I swallowed.

“He said…”

The memory hurt.

“He said you could help.””

Ray looked away.

For a second, I saw something.

Pain.

Real pain.

Not guilt.

Something else.

“I told him to come back tomorrow,” Ray whispered.

Nobody spoke.

“What?””

Ray rubbed his face.

“That night.””

His voice became quieter.

“He came here. He asked questions. He looked terrified.””

He looked around the shop.

“I told him I was closing. I told him we could talk in the morning.””

Sam closed his eyes.

“And he left.””

Ray nodded.

“Yes.””

Victor smiled slightly.

“And then?””

Ray stared at him.

“Then what?””

“You tell us.””

Victor pushed away from the wall.

“Because that’s the part you forgot.””

Ray’s expression hardened.

“I didn’t forget anything.””

Victor looked at him.

“You really believe that?””

The silence answered.

Ray believed it.

But he wasn’t certain.

That was the problem.

Victor reached into his coat.

Daniels immediately stepped forward.

“Slowly.””

Victor pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the counter.

Inside were papers.

Old documents.

Medical records.

Ray looked at them.

“What are those?””

“Your records.””

Ray frowned.

“My what?””

“After the accident.””

The room changed.

“Accident?”” I asked.

Victor looked at me.

“The night Daniel died wasn’t the only thing that happened.””

Ray stared at the papers.

“What accident?””

Victor looked at Sam.

“Tell him.””

Sam’s face tightened.

“No.””

Ray looked between them.

“Tell me.””

Sam looked like he wanted to run.

But he stayed.

“Ray…”

“Tell me.””

A long silence.

Then Sam whispered:

“You were injured that night.””

Ray froze.

“What?””

“You were found unconscious near the highway.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Ray.

“You don’t remember?””

He shook his head slowly.

“No.””

Sam nodded.

“Because you suffered a head injury.””

Victor tapped the papers.

“Memory gaps. Confusion. Missing hours.””

Ray stared.

“You knew?””

Sam looked away.

“I knew you were hurt.””

“But not why?””

Sam didn’t answer.

Ray’s eyes narrowed.

“What happened?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniels picked up the documents.

“These look legitimate.””

He scanned the pages.

“Hospital records.””

Ray looked at him.

“Read.””

Daniels hesitated.

Then:

“Patient admitted after motorcycle-related incident. Trauma to the head. Temporary memory loss reported.””

Ray stepped back.

A thousand questions crossed his face.

“I was on a motorcycle?””

Sam nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Near Route 66.””

The room went cold.

The same road.

The same route Ray was supposed to ride tonight.

Victor watched him.

“Now you understand.””

Ray looked at him.

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I understand someone is trying to manipulate me.””

Victor smiled.

“Good.””

“What?””

“Because that means you’re finally thinking.””

Ray stared.

Victor continued.

“Your brother Ethan found the files. Sam found the helmets. Caleb found the memory.””

He looked around.

“Everyone has a piece.””

Then he looked at Ray.

“But only you were there.””

A silence.

Only you were there.

The words stayed.

Because that was the one thing nobody could explain.

Ray didn’t remember.

But he had been there.

Daniels looked at Victor.

“If Ray was involved, why would he have memory loss?””

Victor answered immediately.

“Because he wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Everyone froze.

Ray looked at him.

“What?””

Victor walked closer.

“Daniel wasn’t the target.””

Sam whispered:

“No.””

Victor nodded.

“He was the witness.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

Victor looked at me.

“Daniel discovered the operation.””

He pointed at Ray.

“Ray discovered Daniel.””

Then he pointed at me.

“And Caleb recorded it.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Victor looked at me.

“You had a camera.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I didn’t.””

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“You worked security at the shop back then.””

I stared.

That was true.

Eight years ago, before I became head mechanic, I handled deliveries and security systems.

But I didn’t remember any camera.

Victor continued.

“You installed a backup camera after a theft.””

A memory flickered.

A small camera.

A hidden location.

The back entrance.

I grabbed the counter.

“No.””

Ray looked at me.

“Caleb?””

I whispered:

“I remember.””

Everyone turned.

I closed my eyes.

The night came rushing back.

Daniel.

The folder.

The rain.

The camera.

And then…

A fourth person.

Standing near Ray’s motorcycle.

Someone arguing with Daniel.

Someone whose voice I knew.

Someone whose face I almost remembered.

“Who?”” Sam asked.

My breathing became uneven.

“I saw someone.””

“Who?””

I looked at Ray.

Because the memory was finally forming.

A person standing behind Daniel.

A person holding the same silver ring.

But it wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It was someone else.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been there before any of this started.

“I know who was with Daniel that night.””

Ray stepped closer.

“Who?””

I looked toward the front door.

Then back at them.

My voice barely came out.

“It was…”

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone stopped.

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Victor’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

He looked toward the window.

“They found us.””

Daniels moved toward the blinds.

“Who?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Because a shadow appeared outside.

A familiar shape.

A person walking toward Dawson Cycle.

Ray saw the face first.

And all the anger left his body.

Because the person standing outside wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It was someone Ray knew better than anyone.

Someone who had been beside him for years.

Someone who had helped him build Dawson Cycle.

The person opened the door.

May you like

And said:

“Ray, I think it’s time you remembered what you did.””
