Chapter 9: The Truth We Were Both Denied

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The phone was still pressed against my ear.

But my mind had stopped processing words.

“The name on the original record was yours.””

David’s voice repeated in my head.

Mine.

Not Michael’s.

Not some stranger’s.

Mine.

I sat down slowly.

“Say that again.””

The man on the phone took a breath.

“When Noah was born, the original paperwork listed you as his father.””

I closed my eyes.

A strange mix of relief and confusion washed over me.

“Then why was it changed?””

“That’s what I’ve been trying to understand for years.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who changed it?””

A pause.

“Someone requested an amendment.””

“Who?””

David hesitated.

“I can’t make that accusation without proper documentation.””

I stood up.

“Then tell me what you know.””

His voice became careful.

“I know Vanessa came to the hospital records department after Noah’s birth.””

My heart sank.

“She changed something?””

“She requested corrections.””

“What corrections?””

David sighed.

“The listed emergency contact. The secondary information. Some details related to the family record.””

I frowned.

“But my name stayed?””

“No.””

The room became silent.

“What?””

“Your name was removed from one version of the records.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer frustrated me.

After all these years, everyone had pieces of the truth.

Nobody had the entire picture.

“David, I need to understand something.””

“What?””

“If my name was removed, why did Sarah say Michael’s name appeared?””

Another pause.

Then David said something unexpected.

“Because there were multiple versions.””

My heart stopped.

“Multiple versions?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

I walked to the window.

Outside, the neighborhood was quiet.

Families were sleeping.

Children were dreaming.

And I was standing there trying to uncover the truth about my own son.

“What do I do now?””

David answered quietly.

“Find the original copy.””

“Where?””

“The hospital archive.””

“Can I get it?””

“You’ll need to request it legally.””

I looked down.

Legally.

That word again.

Everything with Noah had become paperwork.

Schedules.

Requests.

Approvals.

Like being a father required permission.

After the call ended, I sat there until sunrise.

When Emily woke up, she found me still at the table.

She didn’t ask if I was okay.

She already knew.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“I was right.””

She sat down.

“About what?””

“There was a secret.””

Her expression became serious.

“What kind?””

I told her everything.

The hospital.

The records.

My name.

Michael.

Vanessa.

When I finished, Emily was quiet.

Then she said:

“Daniel, what if Vanessa didn’t know everything either?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“What if she was also trying to hide something she was scared of?””

I thought about Vanessa at the door.

Her anger.

Her fear.

Her silence.

For the first time, I wondered if there was another side to the story.

Not a side that excused what she did.

But a side that explained it.

“I need to talk to her.””

Emily nodded.

“Then talk to her.””

I looked surprised.

“You’re not worried?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because this isn’t about winning.””

She reached for my hand.

“It’s about Noah.””

That afternoon, I went back to Vanessa’s house.

This time, I didn’t knock with anger.

I knocked with one purpose.

The door opened.

Vanessa looked surprised.

“Daniel?””

“I need to talk.””

She studied my face.

Then she stepped outside.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“David called me.””

Her expression changed instantly.

“Who?””

“The hospital administrator.””

Vanessa went completely still.

I continued.

“He told me my name was on the original records.””

Her eyes filled.

Not with anger.

With pain.

“You found out.””

The words shocked me.

“You knew?””

She looked away.

“I knew there was a possibility.””

“A possibility?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Daniel, after Noah was born, there were people trying to make decisions for me.””

“Who?””

“My family.””

I waited.

She continued.

“They thought you weren’t stable enough.””

I stared.

“What?””

“They thought you were too young. Too emotional. They convinced me I needed protection.””

My anger softened slightly.

“Protection from me?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Protection from losing everything.””

I didn’t speak.

Vanessa looked down.

“Michael helped me because he knew my family.””

“And you let him become part of Noah’s story?””

“I never wanted that.””

“Then why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was scared.””

The same words.

But this time, they sounded different.

“I thought if I pushed you away, nobody could use you against me.””

I shook my head.

“You pushed me away from my son.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I know I did.””

For the first time in years, Vanessa wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting it.

“I thought I was protecting Noah.””

She looked at me.

“But I became the person hurting him.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because I had spent so long seeing Vanessa as the enemy.

But the truth was more complicated.

She made choices.

Choices that hurt me.

Choices that hurt Noah.

But behind those choices was someone who had been afraid.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“There’s one more thing you need to know about Michael.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“He wasn’t trying to replace you.””

“Then what was he trying to do?””

Vanessa looked toward the house.

“He was trying to expose the people who made me change those records.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

May you like

She looked back at me.

“My father.””
