Chapter 4: The Question I Never Asked

I didn’t drive home immediately.

I sat in my car outside Vanessa’s house for nearly twenty minutes.

The engine was off.

My hands were resting on the steering wheel.

But my mind wouldn’t stop.

Ask your girlfriend why she really wanted to meet him.

Those words kept replaying.

Because Vanessa knew exactly where to attack.

She knew my fears.

She knew my weak spots.

And she knew that the fastest way to make me doubt someone was to plant a question.

Her entire strategy had always been the same.

Make me question myself.

Make me defend myself.

Make me feel guilty.

But this time was different.

This time, I wasn’t alone.

I called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

“Are you okay?””

I looked back at the house.

“No.””

A pause.

“What did she say?””

I hesitated.

“She mentioned my girlfriend.””

Marcus sighed.

“She’s trying to create another distraction.””

“I know.””

“But?””

I looked down.

“But part of me wonders why she said it.””

Marcus was quiet.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“Because there might be something you need to ask.””

That surprised me.

“You think she’s telling the truth?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“But sometimes people hide lies inside the truth.””

I thought about that.

Because Vanessa had always done that.

She mixed small truths with big lies.

She knew exactly how to make things believable.

I drove home.

When I walked through the door, my girlfriend, Emily, was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“You look exhausted.””

I placed my keys down.

“Something happened today.””

Her expression changed.

“Is Noah okay?””

“He’s okay.””

I sat across from her.

“But Vanessa said something.””

Emily became still.

“What did she say?””

“She said I should ask you why you really wanted to meet Noah.””

For a moment, Emily didn’t move.

That scared me more than anything.

“Emily?””

She looked down.

“Daniel…”

My heart sank.

“Why did you react like that?””

She rubbed her hands together.

“There’s something I didn’t tell you.””

I felt a heavy feeling in my chest.

“What?””

She took a deep breath.

“When we first started dating, I didn’t know how much Vanessa disliked me.””

“I know she didn’t like you.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

She looked at me.

“She contacted me.””

I froze.

“When?””

“About six months ago.””

“Why?””

Emily looked uncomfortable.

“She wanted me to stay away from Noah.””

I leaned back.

“What?””

“She said you were confused. That you were trying to replace your family with a new one.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did you say?””

“I told her I wasn’t trying to replace anyone.””

Emily’s eyes filled slightly.

“I told her Noah needed his father. Not less of him.””

I believed her.

But there was still something missing.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because I didn’t want to make things worse.””

“Emily.””

“I thought if I stayed calm, eventually Vanessa would stop seeing me as a threat.””

I looked away.

A part of me understood.

Another part of me felt hurt.

“Did she say anything else?””

Emily hesitated.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“She asked me questions about you.””

“What kind of questions?””

“She wanted to know if you were planning to move in with me. If you were going to take Noah away. If you were building a life without her.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not what this is.””

“I know.””

Emily reached across the table.

“But Daniel, there’s something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She asked me about Noah’s birth certificate.””

The room became silent.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“You didn’t ask?””

“I did.””

“What did she say?””

Emily’s face turned serious.

“She said there were things about Noah’s birth that you never questioned.””

My stomach tightened.

“What things?””

Emily looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Because suddenly, Vanessa’s words from earlier felt different.

You don’t know everything.

I stood up.

“What are you saying?””

Emily shook her head.

“I’m saying you need to find out why she’s so desperate to control who gets close to Noah.””

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke softly.

“Is this Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m calling because I knew Noah’s mother before you did.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“My name is Sarah.””

Another pause.

“And there’s something you need to know about the day Noah was born.””

I stood completely still.

May you like

Because I suddenly realized the battle over my son wasn’t just about custody.

It was about a secret Vanessa had been hiding since the beginning. :::
