Chapter 6: The Name She Tried To Hide
I couldn’t speak.
The coffee shop around me continued moving.
People laughed.
Cups clattered.
Someone walked past our table carrying a tray.
But all I heard was Sarah’s sentence.
A document meant to make you disappear from Noah’s life.
I looked at her.
“Are you saying Vanessa planned this?””
Sarah didn’t answer immediately.
“I’m saying she has been preparing for something.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Sarah folded her hands.
“But it’s enough for you to be careful.””
I looked down at the envelope.
The papers inside suddenly felt heavier.
“I need to know everything.””
Sarah nodded.
“I understand.””
“Then tell me.””
She took a deep breath.
“After Noah was born, Vanessa was different.””
“How?””
“She was worried all the time.””
“About what?””
“Someone finding out.””
I leaned forward.
“Finding out what?””
Sarah looked toward the window.
“I don’t know the entire story.””
I felt frustrated.
“You called me here because you knew something.””
“I know pieces.””
“Then give me the pieces.””
Sarah nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
She opened her purse and removed an old notebook.
“I wrote down everything I remembered.””
I looked at the notebook.
“You kept notes?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew something wasn’t right.””
She opened it.
“Two days after Noah was born, Vanessa received a phone call.””
“From who?””
“She wouldn’t say.””
“What did she do?””
“She left the hospital room crying.””
I frowned.
“Vanessa cried?””
Sarah nodded.
“She told me her life was about to change.””
I looked away.
That didn’t sound like the Vanessa I knew.
The Vanessa I knew was always in control.
Always prepared.
Always certain.
Sarah continued.
“Three years later, when you and Vanessa separated, she contacted me.””
My eyes returned to her.
“She contacted you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To ask if I remembered certain details from Noah’s birth.””
I felt a chill.
“What details?””
Sarah looked down.
“She wanted to know if anyone else had access to Noah’s hospital records.””
I stared at her.
“Why would she care about that?””
Sarah’s expression was serious.
“Because she was afraid someone would find out.””
“Find out what?””
Sarah closed the notebook.
“I don’t know.””
I stood up slightly.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
Her voice became emotional.
“But Daniel, I saw what happened to you at that door yesterday.””
I froze.
“You were there?””
Sarah nodded.
“I was nearby.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to see if Vanessa had changed.””
“And?””
Sarah looked down.
“She hasn’t.””
I sat back.
“What do you mean?””
“She’s still controlling who gets close to Noah.””
I looked at the table.
Everything suddenly connected.
The closed doors.
The excuses.
The accusations.
The way Vanessa always turned every conversation into an attack.
But there was still something I needed to know.
“Who is the man on the paperwork?””
Sarah looked uncomfortable.
“I think you already know his name.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She pushed a small piece of paper toward me.
A name was written on it.
I stared.
Because I recognized it.
Not from my life.
But from Vanessa’s.
“Michael?””
Sarah nodded.
“Michael Reed.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Vanessa’s old friend.
The man she always said was “just someone who helped her after the breakup.””
I looked up.
“Why would his name be there?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Daniel, there’s something else you need to know.””
“What?””
“The day Vanessa came to the hospital to update Noah’s records…”
She paused.
“She wasn’t alone.””
My voice became quiet.
“With who?””
Sarah looked directly at me.
“With Michael Reed.””
I stared at her.
A thousand questions rushed through my mind.
Why had Vanessa hidden this?
Why had she fought so hard to keep me away from Noah?
And why was Michael’s name connected to the beginning of my son’s life?
My phone suddenly buzzed.
I looked down.
A message from Vanessa.
Three words.
*Stop digging, Daniel.*
My blood ran cold.
Because I had never told her I was digging.
I looked at Sarah.
She saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I slowly turned my phone around.
Sarah read the message.
Then her face changed.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
May you like
She whispered:
“She knows.””
