Chapter 5: The Secret From The Hospital Room
I stayed silent after the woman introduced herself.
Sarah.
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way she spoke did.
She sounded nervous.
Like she had been carrying something heavy for a long time.
“What do you know about Noah’s birth?”” I asked.
There was a long pause.
Then she said quietly, “Not everything.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Then why are you calling me?””
“Because I saw what happened.””
“What happened?””
Another pause.
“Daniel, are you alone?””
I looked around the kitchen.
Emily was watching me carefully.
“Yes.””
“I need you to understand something before I tell you this.””
Her voice dropped.
“I’m not trying to hurt Noah. I’m not trying to take him away from anyone.””
I frowned.
“Then what are you trying to do?””
“Make sure he has the truth.””
That sentence made my stomach turn.
“What truth?””
Sarah exhaled slowly.
“When Noah was born, there was a problem with the paperwork.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What kind of problem?””
“I worked at the hospital.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“You were a nurse?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Emily.
She immediately understood something was wrong.
“Daniel?””
I covered the phone slightly.
“I’ll explain later.””
Then I focused back on Sarah.
“What does this have to do with Vanessa?””
“She was under a lot of stress after Noah was born.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“I know.””
Sarah’s voice trembled.
“But I need you to hear everything before you decide what to believe.””
I sat down.
“Okay.””
“When Noah was delivered, there was a disagreement between Vanessa and someone else.””
“Who?””
Sarah hesitated.
“Someone from her family.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What disagreement?””
“I can’t explain everything over the phone.””
“Why not?””
“Because I don’t know who is listening.””
My eyes moved toward the window.
The same feeling I had at Vanessa’s house returned.
Like there were pieces of a puzzle hidden right in front of me.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Vanessa has been afraid for years.””
“Afraid of what?””
Sarah lowered her voice.
“Afraid that someone would tell you what really happened.””
I stood up.
“Tell me where you are.””
There was silence.
Then she said, “Tomorrow morning. The coffee shop on Oak Street.””
“Why wait?””
“Because if I’m right, you need to come prepared.””
“Prepared for what?””
Her answer came softly.
“To find out why Vanessa has spent years trying to control your relationship with your son.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Emily walked closer.
“What happened?””
I looked at her.
“Someone from the hospital called.””
Her face changed.
“What did they say?””
“That there was a problem when Noah was born.””
Emily went quiet.
“Daniel…”
“I don’t know what it means.””
She reached for my hand.
“But you’re going to find out.””
I nodded.
The next morning, I arrived at the coffee shop ten minutes early.
I sat near the back corner.
I watched every person who walked through the door.
I didn’t know what I was expecting.
Maybe someone with answers.
Maybe someone who could finally explain why being Noah’s father had become a fight.
At exactly nine o’clock, an older woman walked in.
She looked around.
Then she spotted me.
“Daniel?””
I stood.
“Yes?””
She nodded.
“I’m Sarah.””
We sat down.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she placed a small envelope on the table.
“I kept this because I thought one day you might need it.””
I looked at the envelope.
“What is it?””
“Something I should have given you years ago.””
My hands moved toward it.
But I stopped.
“Why didn’t you?””
Sarah looked down.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of Vanessa?””
She nodded.
“And of what would happen if I was wrong.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of a hospital form.
My eyes scanned the page.
I didn’t understand everything.
But one thing caught my attention.
A section that appeared incomplete.
“What am I looking at?””
Sarah leaned forward.
“When Noah was born, Vanessa changed information on a form after leaving the hospital.””
My heart dropped.
“What information?””
Sarah looked directly at me.
“The emergency contact information.””
I frowned.
“That’s it?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“That was only the beginning.””
I looked at her.
“What else?””
Sarah swallowed.
“There was another man listed during the first hours after Noah’s birth.””
The room felt completely silent.
“What man?””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know his relationship to Vanessa.””
My hands went cold.
“Then why are you telling me?””
“Because a few months ago, I saw his name again.””
“Where?””
Sarah leaned closer.
“On a document Vanessa asked someone to prepare.””
I stared at her.
“What document?””
She hesitated.
May you like
Then she said:
“A document meant to make you disappear from Noah’s life.””
