Chapter 7: The Truth Behind The Silence

I stared at the message on my phone.

*Stop digging, Daniel.*

Three words.

That was all it said.

But those three words confirmed something I had been trying not to believe.

Vanessa knew.

She knew I was asking questions.

She knew Sarah had contacted me.

And most importantly…

She knew there was something worth hiding.

I looked at Sarah.

“How could she know?””

Sarah’s face was pale.

“I don’t know.””

“You said you didn’t tell her.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then someone did.””

The realization sat between us.

Someone was watching.

Someone was reporting back.

Sarah slowly closed her notebook.

“You need to be careful.””

I looked at her.

“I’ve spent months being careful.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I mean more than that.””

I didn’t answer.

Because a part of me was angry.

Angry that I even had to think like this.

I wasn’t trying to win a war.

I was trying to be a father.

I wanted to pack lunches.

I wanted to hear about school.

I wanted to watch Noah play with his toy trucks on the living room floor.

I never imagined I would need evidence to prove I loved my own child.

I stood up.

“I need to talk to Vanessa.””

Sarah immediately looked concerned.

“Daniel, don’t go there angry.””

“I’m not going there angry.””

I looked at the message again.

“I’m going there with questions.””

Before leaving, Sarah stopped me.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The person who helped Vanessa with those documents…”

“Yes?””

“He wasn’t trying to remove you because he hated you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah looked away.

“It means there was something he wanted.””

“What?””

She looked back at me.

“Control.””

Those words followed me all the way to Vanessa’s house.

When I arrived, her car was already in the driveway.

I knocked.

This time, I didn’t wait long.

The door opened.

Vanessa looked surprised.

Then annoyed.

“What are you doing here?””

I looked past her.

“Noah home?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because I want to see my son.””

She stepped outside and closed the door behind her.

“Daniel, we already had this conversation.””

“No. We didn’t.””

I kept my voice calm.

“We had you telling me what you wanted me to believe.””

Her expression changed.

“What is that supposed to mean?””

“It means I know about Michael.””

For the first time, Vanessa went completely still.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“What about Michael?””

“Why was he involved when Noah was born?””

Her face hardened.

“Who told you that?””

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it proved everything.

“You didn’t answer the question.””

She crossed her arms.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain it.””

“I don’t have to explain every part of my past to you.””

“This isn’t about your past.””

I stepped closer.

“This is about our son.””

Her voice became louder.

“You don’t get to suddenly act like you care after everything.””

I felt the old anger rise.

But I pushed it down.

“After everything?””

“Yes.””

She pointed at me.

“You left.””

The accusation hit me.

Because it was the one thing she always used.

I shook my head.

“We both know that’s not the whole story.””

“No?””

“No.””

I looked at the house.

“I wanted to stay involved.””

“You wanted things your way.””

“I wanted to be Noah’s father.””

She looked away.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

A long silence.

And for the first time, Vanessa looked tired.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“I was scared.””

I blinked.

“What?””

She looked back at me.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“You think I wanted things to become this way?””

I stared at her.

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

She looked down.

“When Noah was born, everything changed.””

“What changed?””

She shook her head.

“I can’t tell you.””

My heart sank.

“You can’t?””

“No.””

“Or you won’t?””

She looked at me.

And that was when I knew.

She wasn’t hiding because she didn’t know.

She was hiding because she was protecting something.

A car pulled into the driveway.

Both of us turned.

Michael Reed stepped out.

My entire body went tense.

Vanessa immediately looked nervous.

Michael walked toward us.

“What’s going on?””

I stared at him.

“You tell me.””

He stopped.

Vanessa quickly stepped between us.

“Daniel, leave.””

“No.””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“You told him?””

She froze.

Those three words changed everything.

I looked at Michael.

“Told me what?””

Neither of them answered.

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“This was supposed to stay buried.””

My stomach dropped.

“Buried?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Michael, stop.””

But it was too late.

Because I had heard enough.

I looked at both of them.

“What happened the day Noah was born?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

And slowly said:

“Daniel…”

May you like

His voice became quiet.

“You’re not Noah’s only parent who was kept in the dark.””
