Chapter 9: The Message My Father Left Behind

I spent the next few hours sitting in my car outside my apartment, staring through the windshield without seeing anything.

The city moved around me.

People walked past carrying flowers from graduation celebrations.

Cars drove by with music playing.

Friends laughed on sidewalks.

Everyone else’s life continued normally.

Mine had split into two parts.

Before that night.

And after.

Before, I believed Ethan was the person who would stand beside me through everything.

After, I realized I didn’t even know the man who had been sleeping beside me in my dreams.

My father always told me one thing when I was younger.

“People reveal themselves when they have something to lose.””

I never understood what he meant.

Until now.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from an unknown number.

*“I know you have questions. Meet me tomorrow morning. There is something your father wanted you to have.””*

No name.

No explanation.

Just another mystery.

Another person who somehow knew more about my life than I did.

I almost threw my phone onto the passenger seat.

I was tired of secrets.

Tired of people deciding what I could handle.

Tired of being the last person told the truth.

But something stopped me.

My father.

If there was even a small chance he had left something behind, I needed to know.

The next morning, I drove to the address.

It was an old coffee shop on the edge of town.

Nothing special.

Nothing that looked connected to billionaires or hidden family conflicts.

A woman sat in the corner.

She looked to be in her late fifties.

When she saw me, she immediately stood.

“Emma?””

I nodded.

“Who are you?””

She looked emotional.

“My name is Rebecca Collins.””

The name meant nothing.

Until she said the next words.

“I worked with your father.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew my father?””

She smiled sadly.

“He talked about you all the time.””

I sat down slowly.

“What happened?””

Rebecca looked at the table.

“Your father discovered something about the Whitmore family’s company.””

I clenched my hands.

“What?””

“Financial fraud.””

The words landed heavily.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded.

“He spent months collecting information.””

“And Ethan’s family knew?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why didn’t my father tell me?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But somehow, protecting me meant leaving me completely unaware.

“What did he leave behind?””

Rebecca reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small wooden box.

My breathing stopped.

I recognized it.

My father kept it on his desk when I was a child.

He always told me never to open it unless he was there.

I stared at it.

“How did you get this?””

“He gave it to me.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew something might happen.””

My fingers touched the box.

It felt like touching a piece of the past.

“What’s inside?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I never opened it.””

I looked at her.

“You had this all these years?””

“Yes.””

“Why give it to me now?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because Ethan’s father contacted me.””

My body went cold.

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

Two weeks.

The same time Ethan became distant.

The same time everything started changing.

“What did he want?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“He wanted to know if I still had your father’s box.””

I stared at her.

“And you told him?””

“No.””

A small relief entered my chest.

“Then how did he know?””

She sighed.

“Because someone else told him.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Ethan.””

I closed my eyes.

Even after everything.

Another wound.

Another betrayal.

“I don’t understand.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Emma, Ethan didn’t enter your life randomly.””

I already knew that.

But hearing someone else say it hurt.

“Your father’s evidence disappeared after his death.””

I looked at the box.

“This is the evidence?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Then what is it?””

She looked serious.

“It’s a message.””

“A message for who?””

She looked directly at me.

“You.””

My hands trembled.

I opened the box.

Inside was a small envelope.

My father’s handwriting was on the front.

My name.

Emma.

I hadn’t seen that handwriting in years.

The moment I touched it, tears filled my eyes.

Because suddenly, all the anger disappeared.

For a second, I was just a daughter missing her father.

I opened the letter.

Only a few lines were written.

*Emma, if you are reading this, it means I was right to worry.*

My heart tightened.

*Trust your instincts. People who love you will never ask you to ignore the truth.*

I swallowed.

Then I reached the final line.

And my entire body froze.

*The person who brings this message to you is the person who betrayed you first.*

I looked up.

Rebecca was watching me.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Ethan.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“What?””

His voice sounded broken.

“Emma, I know where you are.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“Because I was the one who sent Rebecca to find you.””

I stood up.

“What?””

“Please listen.””

“No.””

“Emma, I need you to understand.””

“Understand what?””

His voice cracked.

“That I wasn’t trying to use you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Then why did your family search for my father’s evidence?””

He was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then he whispered:

“Because my father wasn’t the only person hiding something.””

I froze.

“What are you saying?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father didn’t trust Rebecca either.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Ethan answered softly.

“Because the person who betrayed your father was someone close to him.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She noticed my expression.

And suddenly looked afraid.

Ethan whispered:

“Emma…”

“Don’t trust anyone until you hear the whole story.””

The call ended.

I stared at Rebecca.

The woman who claimed to know my father.

May you like

The woman holding his final message.

And for the first time, I wondered if she was another person who had been lying to me.
