Chapter 1: The Night Everything Changed
I used to believe the worst moments of your life came with warnings.
A phone call at midnight.
A doctor sitting you down with a serious expression.
A stranger knocking on your door with terrible news.
I never imagined my entire world would collapse inside the apartment where I was supposed to celebrate the happiest night of my life.
The graduation cap was still in my hand when I opened the bedroom door and saw my best friend crying.
Not the kind of crying where someone wipes away a few tears and says they are okay.
The kind where someone is trying to hold themselves together, but their whole body has already given up.
“Olivia?”” I froze.
“What happened?””
She was sitting on the edge of my bed, her graduation dress wrinkled, her makeup streaked down her cheeks. In her hand was a small white plastic stick.
For a second, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.
Then I did.
My stomach dropped.
“Is that…” I whispered.
Olivia looked up at me, and the sadness in her eyes made my heart race.
“I didn’t know who else to tell,” she said quietly.
I stepped into the room and closed the door behind me.
Just thirty minutes earlier, I had been standing under bright lights on the university stage, hearing my name announced while my family cheered from the crowd.
I had imagined that moment for years.
The diploma.
The photos.
The celebration.
The future.
My boyfriend Ethan had kissed my forehead before the ceremony and told me he was proud of me.
“You’re going to do amazing things,” he had whispered.
I believed him.
I believed every word.
“Olivia, please tell me you’re not saying what I think you’re saying,” I said.
Her fingers tightened around the pregnancy test.
“I’m pregnant.””
The room became completely silent.
I could hear the music from the living room.
I could hear people laughing outside.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
“You’re pregnant?”” I repeated.
She nodded, tears falling faster.
“I found out a few days ago.””
“A few days ago?”” My voice cracked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked away.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Olivia swallowed hard.
“Of losing you.””
That answer confused me more than anything.
Because Olivia wasn’t just my friend.
She was the person who sat beside me during every difficult exam.
The person who stayed awake with me after my father passed away.
The person who knew every dream I had.
She was family.
I walked closer and sat beside her.
“Olivia, whatever is happening, we’ll figure it out. You don’t have to be alone.””
Her face twisted with guilt.
That was when something inside me started feeling wrong.
“Who is the father?”” I asked softly.
She didn’t answer.
The silence felt heavier than any confession.
“Olivia.””
Her eyes filled with tears again.
“I didn’t want it to happen like this.””
My hands went cold.
“Like what?””
Before she could answer, I heard a noise outside the bedroom.
A shoe scraping against the floor.
Someone breathing.
I turned toward the door.
For a moment, I thought maybe one of our classmates had walked into the apartment.
But then I saw a shadow underneath the door.
Someone was standing there.
Watching.
My confusion quickly turned into anger.
I walked toward the door and opened it.
And there he was.
Ethan.
My boyfriend.
The person who had held my hand hours earlier.
The person who had smiled at me when I walked across the graduation stage.
He stood frozen in the hallway.
“Ethan?”” I stared at him.
“What are you doing creeping around out here?””
His face changed instantly.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Real fear.
My heart started pounding.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”” I asked.
He opened his mouth, but no words came out.
Then Olivia stood behind me.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Because he knows.””
I slowly turned around.
“What?””
Olivia wiped her tears.
“I’m sorry.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“Sorry for what?””
She looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
And the next sentence destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“Because I’m pregnant by… your boyfriend.””
My graduation cap slipped from my fingers.
It hit the floor.
The sound was small.
Almost nothing.
But somehow it felt louder than a scream.
I stared at Ethan.
Waiting.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to say this was some horrible misunderstanding.
Waiting for him to tell me Olivia was lying.
“Tell me she’s lying,” I said.
My voice shook.
“Ethan, look at me.””
He looked down.
That was when my heart broke.
Because a person who has nothing to hide doesn’t look away.
“Say something,” I whispered.
“Please.””
He finally lifted his eyes.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””
Those words hurt more than the truth.
Because he wasn’t denying it.
I stepped backward.
“You didn’t mean for this to happen?””
My hands trembled.
“You mean you accidentally destroyed everything?””
“Please let me explain,” Ethan said.
“Explain what?”” I snapped.
“Explain how you were telling me you loved me while you were with my best friend?””
Olivia started crying harder.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I looked at her.
“You had months to tell me.””
She lowered her head.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
Neither of them answered.
The apartment suddenly felt like a place I didn’t recognize.
The decorations.
The balloons.
The graduation photos waiting to be taken.
Everything that was supposed to represent a new beginning now looked like a cruel joke.
Ethan stepped toward me.
“Please, just listen.””
I held up my hand.
“Don’t.””
The person I loved most had betrayed me.
The person I trusted most had helped him.
And I had no idea how long they had been hiding the truth.
Then Ethan said something that made my blood run cold.
Something that made me realize this betrayal was much deeper than I thought.
“Emma…”
May you like
He took a breath.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
