Chapter 3: The Envelope That Changed Everything

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The envelope sat between Olivia’s fingers like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Ethan looked at it the way someone looks at a fire spreading through a room.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Terrified.

And that fear told me more than any confession could.

I stepped closer.

“Give it to me.””

Olivia hesitated.

“Emma…”

“Give it to me.””

My voice was calm, but even I could hear the anger underneath it.

She slowly handed me the envelope.

The paper felt strangely warm from her hands.

I looked at Ethan one more time.

“Why don’t you want me to open this?””

He swallowed.

“Because you’re upset right now, and you don’t know what you’re doing.””

I almost smiled.

“You cheated on me with my best friend, lied to me for a year, and now you’re worried about my decisions?””

“Emma, listen—”

“No.””

I held up the envelope.

“For once, you’re going to listen.””

The room became silent.

I opened it.

Inside were several printed photos.

The first one made my stomach twist.

It was Ethan.

Standing outside a restaurant.

With a woman I had never seen before.

The second photo showed them sitting together.

Holding hands.

The third one showed them hugging.

I looked at the dates.

My breath caught.

These weren’t recent.

They were from months ago.

Before Olivia’s pregnancy.

Before tonight.

Before everything fell apart.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

Ethan looked down.

“Emma…”

“Who is she?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I looked at Olivia.

“You knew about this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“Then how did you get these?””

She looked away.

“I found them accidentally.””

“When?””

She stayed quiet.

“Olivia.””

“Two months ago.””

My heart sank.

“Two months?””

She nodded.

“And you still let me believe everything was fine?””

“I was trying to figure out what to do.””

I stared at her.

“You weren’t trying to help me.””

Her face fell.

“I was scared.””

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone was confused.

Everyone needed time.

But somehow, I was always the last person to know what was happening in my own life.

I turned back to Ethan.

“Who is she?””

He took a deep breath.

“Her name is Claire.””

“Claire what?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Claire what?””

“Claire Morgan.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way he said it meant everything.

“You know her.””

Ethan rubbed his face.

“I used to know her.””

“Used to?””

“Yes.””

“Then why were you meeting her?””

He looked frustrated.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

I laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind that comes out when something hurts too much.

“Every person who gets caught says that.””

“Emma, please.””

“No, Ethan. Explain.””

He looked at the floor.

“Claire and I had history.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How much history?””

He didn’t answer.

Again.

The silence became unbearable.

“Were you with her while you were with me?””

His jaw tightened.

“I made mistakes.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because he still couldn’t say it.

He couldn’t look me in the eye and admit what he had done.

“You cheated.””

“I was confused.””

“You cheated.””

“I never stopped caring about you.””

“You cheated.””

My voice cracked.

The room went quiet.

Olivia covered her mouth.

I looked at both of them.

Two people who had been part of my everyday life.

Two people I trusted.

Two people who knew exactly how much losing someone could hurt me.

And they still did it.

I picked up my bag.

“I’m done.””

Ethan moved quickly.

“Emma, wait.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“You don’t know the whole story.””

I froze.

Those words bothered me.

Because they sounded like another secret.

Another hidden piece.

I slowly turned around.

“What else is there?””

Ethan looked at Olivia.

She immediately looked nervous.

That was the moment I realized they had both been protecting something.

“What else?”” I asked again.

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Claire is not just someone from my past.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then who is she?””

He looked at me.

And his answer made the entire room feel colder.

“She’s my fiancée.””

I stared at him.

For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong.

“What?””

Olivia’s face went pale.

“Ethan…”

But he kept looking at me.

“She was my fiancée before I met you.””

The words didn’t make sense.

“You were engaged?””

He nodded slowly.

“And you never told me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

“After I figured everything out.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t figure out a person’s life while destroying someone else’s.””

The graduation celebration outside suddenly felt like it belonged to another universe.

People were laughing.

Taking pictures.

Celebrating futures.

And inside this room, mine was being torn apart piece by piece.

I looked at Ethan.

“So what was I?””

He looked hurt.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

He couldn’t.

That was the answer.

I opened the door.

But before I could leave, Olivia spoke.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

She was crying.

“There’s one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

“What now?””

Olivia looked at Ethan.

“He didn’t just hide Claire from you.””

Her voice shook.

“He hid why their engagement ended.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Olivia, stop.””

But she continued.

“Because Claire didn’t leave him.””

I turned slowly.

“What?””

Olivia whispered:

“She disappeared after finding out what Ethan had done.””

My heart pounded.

“What did he do?””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Because for the first time all night, Ethan looked less like someone caught cheating.

And more like someone afraid of being exposed.

Olivia wiped her tears.

“Because the truth about Claire is the reason Ethan chose you.””

I froze.

“Chose me?””

She nodded.

May you like

And then she said something I would never forget.

“He didn’t fall in love with you by accident.””
