Chapter 8: The Choice Between Love And The Truth

I spent years believing the hardest thing in life was losing someone.

I was wrong.

The hardest thing was realizing the person you loved was never the person you thought they were.

I walked out of the apartment that night without saying another word.

Ethan followed me into the hallway.

“Emma, please.””

I kept walking.

“Stop.””

“Just listen.””

I turned around.

“Why?””

He stopped.

“Why should I listen?””

His face fell.

“Because I love you.””

The words used to mean everything.

Now they felt like a weapon.

“You keep saying that.””

“I do love you.””

“Then why did you build our relationship on lies?””

He had no answer.

The hallway lights flickered above us.

A normal apartment hallway.

A normal night.

Except my entire future had been destroyed.

“I need the truth,” I said.

“I’ll tell you everything.””

“No.””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“I don’t want the version you create after getting caught.””

That hurt him.

Good.

Because I had been hurting alone for hours.

“I want the truth from someone who has nothing to lose.””

I turned away.

But before I reached the stairs, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Is this Emma Parker?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Daniel Whitmore.””

I froze.

Ethan’s father.

I slowly looked back.

Ethan’s expression changed when he realized who was calling.

“Emma, don’t.””

I ignored him.

“Why are you calling me?””

The older man was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Because my son has told you only half the story.””

My stomach tightened.

“About what?””

“About your father.””

I gripped my phone.

“What do you know about my father?””

Daniel sighed.

“More than I wish I did.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Emma, hang up.””

I moved away from him.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“Your father discovered something years ago.””

“What?””

“A mistake my family made.””

My heart raced.

“What kind of mistake?””

Silence.

Then:

“One that cost people their lives.””

I felt frozen.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“I’m saying your father tried to expose something dangerous.””

I looked at Ethan.

His face was pale.

“Did Ethan know?””

Another silence.

Then Daniel answered:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

“I’m sorry, Emma.””

I looked at Ethan.

“You knew?””

He didn’t deny it.

That was the final piece.

The final betrayal.

“You knew about my father?””

“I knew there was a connection.””

“A connection?””

My voice shook.

“You knew my father fought your family, and you still came into my life?””

“Emma, I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

“You don’t get to decide that.””

He looked broken.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

He looked at the ground.

“From my family.””

I stared.

“Then why did you become exactly like them?””

He had no answer.

The phone remained against my ear.

Daniel spoke again.

“Emma, there is something else you need to know.””

I closed my eyes.

I was exhausted.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

“What?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your father didn’t leave behind evidence.””

I frowned.

“Then what did he leave?””

Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.

“A person.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Not Ethan.

Not Daniel.

Then Daniel said:

“Your father knew someone would come looking for what he discovered.””

I held my breath.

“And he made sure that person would find you.””

The call ended.

I stood there in silence.

Then Ethan looked at me.

For the first time, he wasn’t asking me to forgive him.

He wasn’t asking me to understand.

He looked afraid.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

Something connected to my father.

Something connected to my entire life.

And then he whispered:

“Emma…”

I looked at him.

“Your father left a message.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

Ethan swallowed.

“In my family’s possession.””

And suddenly, I understood.

The reason he came into my life.

The reason his family cared about me.

The reason everyone had been hiding the truth.

May you like

It was never about love.

It was about what my father left behind.
