Chapter 4: The Truth He Never Wanted Me To Know
I didn’t leave.
Not because I forgave him.
Not because I wanted to hear his excuses.
I stayed because I needed answers.
There is a difference between being hurt and being destroyed.
When someone destroys your trust, the only thing you want is to understand why.
I closed the door behind me.
“Start talking.””
Ethan stared at me.
“Emma.””
“Tell me everything.””
He looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
But I didn’t feel sorry for him.
Not anymore.
“You knew me before Claire disappeared,” I said.
He nodded.
“I met you three months after.””
“And you never mentioned being engaged.””
“I didn’t want to bring my past into our relationship.””
I stared at him.
“Your past?””
I pointed toward Olivia.
“Your past is currently pregnant with your child.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I shook my head.
“You know you got caught.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
He wasn’t sorry because he hurt me.
He was sorry because the truth came out.
Olivia sat quietly in the corner.
She looked broken.
But I couldn’t let myself forget that she was part of this.
“Why did you choose me?”” I asked.
Ethan looked confused.
“What?””
“That’s what she said.””
I pointed at Olivia.
“She said you chose me.””
Silence.
Then Ethan sighed.
“Because Claire and I were already falling apart.””
“Why?””
He looked away.
“She wanted a different life.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“We fought constantly.””
“About what?””
“About trust.””
The irony almost made me angry enough to laugh.
“Trust?””
I stepped closer.
“You’re talking about trust?””
He closed his eyes.
“I made mistakes before I met you.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was becoming familiar.
A warning sign.
“Ethan.””
“I lied to Claire.””
“About what?””
“My family.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He sat down.
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
“My family owns a company.””
I waited.
“That’s not exactly a secret.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“It’s more complicated.””
I crossed my arms.
“Try me.””
He looked at me.
“My family has money.””
“I know.””
“No, Emma.””
His voice lowered.
“You don’t know.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
He looked down.
“My last name isn’t what I told you.””
I stared.
“What?””
“My real name is Ethan Whitmore.””
The name hit me.
Not because I knew him.
Because everyone knew it.
The Whitmores.
One of the wealthiest families in the state.
Their company appeared on news channels.
Their donations were mentioned at charity events.
Their name was printed on buildings.
I looked at him.
“You lied about your identity?””
“I wanted someone to love me for me.””
“And you thought lying was the way to prove that?””
“I was afraid.””
Again.
Fear.
Always fear.
I walked away from him.
“You don’t understand what you did.””
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
I looked at Olivia.
“And you?””
She looked up.
“What?””
“When did you know?””
She looked ashamed.
“About his family?””
I nodded.
She swallowed.
“A few weeks ago.””
I laughed quietly.
“So everyone knew something except me.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent a year defending you both.””
My voice became softer.
“That’s the part that hurts.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
He immediately looked at it.
And his expression changed.
Not fear this time.
Panic.
I noticed.
“Who is it?””
He ignored the call.
The phone rang again.
“Answer it.””
“Emma, don’t.””
“Answer it.””
He slowly picked up.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
I couldn’t hear everything.
Only Ethan’s reaction.
His face lost all color.
Then he whispered:
“Claire?””
My heart stopped.
Because Claire wasn’t supposed to be part of this anymore.
But she was calling.
Now.
On the night everything fell apart.
Ethan listened silently.
Then his eyes moved toward me.
May you like
And the next words out of his mouth made my entire body freeze.
“She knows about the baby.””
