Chapter 9: The Letter My Father Left Behind

I stared at the message on my phone until the words blurred.

*Don’t trust your mother.*

Four words.

Four words that somehow felt heavier than everything I had learned that night.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

My mother was watching me.

And for the first time in my entire life, I wondered if I had ever truly known her.

“Who sent that?”” Jason asked.

I didn’t answer.

I looked down at the envelope in my hand.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

Someone had kept it hidden for years.

Someone had protected it.

Someone had also made sure I never saw it.

My mother stepped closer.

“Emily, please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please don’t make a decision while you’re angry.””

I laughed softly.

“Angry?””

I held up the envelope.

“Mom, I found out today that my boyfriend betrayed me, that you’re pregnant, that my family has been hiding my real father from me, and that my father may not have disappeared the way I was told.””

My voice broke.

“Tell me exactly when I’m supposed to feel calm.””

She had no answer.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did my father write this?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you kept it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because your father asked me to.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“He told me not to give it to you unless I was certain you were ready.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

I looked at the envelope again.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Old handwriting.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

I remembered birthday cards.

Notes he left in my lunchbox.

Little reminders that said:

Be kind.

Be brave.

I love you.

My eyes filled with tears before I even read the first line.

Emily, if you are reading this, something happened that kept me from coming home.

I stopped breathing.

Jason moved closer.

“Emily…”

I kept reading.

First, I need you to know one thing. You were never a mistake. You were never a secret I wanted to hide.

My hands shook.

The moment I held you, I became your father. No blood test, no name, no person could ever change that.

I covered my mouth.

Because even after all those years, my father was still trying to protect me.

I continued.

But there is something you deserve to know. Your mother made choices that hurt many people. However, she was not the only person responsible for what happened.

My eyes moved quickly.

The night I disappeared, I discovered someone close to me had been moving money from my company accounts.

Daniel’s face changed.

I looked at him.

“What company?””

He didn’t answer.

My father’s letter continued.

I found evidence connecting someone in our family to the missing money. When I confronted them, they threatened to expose Diane’s past and destroy our family.

My heart pounded.

Someone in our family.

Someone close.

I kept reading.

I was going to report everything the next morning.

The room became silent.

But I never made it home.

My hands went cold.

Then came the final lines.

Emily, if someone tells you I abandoned you, don’t believe them. I would have walked through fire to come back to you.

Tears fell onto the paper.

I couldn’t stop them.

Because for twenty years, a small part of me had wondered.

Had he left because of me?

Had he chosen another life?

Had he forgotten me?

Now I knew.

He never left.

Someone took him away from me.

I lowered the paper.

“Who was stealing from him?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel?””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“Emily, did you read the letter?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know your father discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who stole from your father was the same person who convinced everyone he disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Rachel whispered:

“Your mother’s brother.””

I looked at my mother.

Her face turned pale.

“My uncle?””

Rachel continued.

“He had access to your father’s business records. He knew about the money. And he knew your father was planning to expose him.””

I looked at my mother.

“Mom.””

She started crying.

“Emily…”

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But her answer came too quickly.

Too desperately.

I remembered Rachel’s warning.

Don’t trust your mother.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know?””

Daniel looked broken.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

Daniel had no answer.

Nobody did.

Then my mother whispered:

“There is something you don’t know about your uncle.””

I turned.

“What?””

Her face was filled with fear.

“He wasn’t alone.””

The room froze.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the floor.

“It means someone helped him.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Who?””

My mother looked at Daniel.

Then at Jason.

Then back at me.

May you like

And the answer she gave destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“It was someone you loved.””
