Chapter 4: The Truth Behind The Lie
I spent the next five minutes standing in my mother’s living room, waiting for someone to tell me that this was all some horrible misunderstanding.
Nobody did.
The silence was the answer.
Jason looked like he wanted to explain.
My mother looked like she wanted forgiveness.
Daniel looked like he had been carrying a secret for years.
And I was the only person who had no idea what was happening inside my own family.
“Start talking,” I said.
Jason looked at me.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
He looked away.
“Tell me the truth.””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“I’ll tell you.””
Jason immediately turned toward him.
“Dad.””
But Daniel didn’t stop.
“The first time Jason met your mother wasn’t at the restaurant he told you about.””
I looked at Jason.
“What restaurant?””
He stayed silent.
My stomach twisted.
“Jason?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Emily, it wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
Daniel answered.
“Your mother and I were already talking.””
My mother looked down.
I felt sick.
“Talking?””
She whispered, “It started as friendship.””
I shook my head.
“Friendship?””
I looked at her.
“You were seeing him?””
“No.””
Daniel interrupted.
“We were trying to figure out something from the past.””
“What past?””
Nobody answered quickly enough.
That was when I knew.
There was another missing piece.
My entire life suddenly felt like a puzzle where everyone had hidden the most important pieces from me.
I sat down because my knees felt weak.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice softened.
“I need you to answer one question.””
She waited.
“Did you ever love me enough to tell me the truth?””
The tears that appeared in her eyes were different.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“I always loved you.””
“Then why did you let me fall in love with him?””
She had no answer.
And somehow, that hurt more.
Jason moved closer.
“I did love you.””
I looked at him.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why my mother?””
His face changed.
“I was confused.””
I stared at him.
“Confused?””
He nodded.
“It happened slowly.””
“No.””
I stood up.
“Don’t make it sound like something that just happened.””
My voice grew stronger.
“You made choices.””
Nobody spoke.
Because I was right.
Jason looked broken.
But I couldn’t let his sadness become my responsibility.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“There’s something you need to understand about Jason.””
I turned.
“What now?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“He wasn’t supposed to be in your life.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Jason looked at his father.
“Stop.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Jason met you because of me.””
My face went numb.
“What?””
My mother covered her mouth.
Jason whispered, “Dad…”
But it was too late.
The truth was already out.
I looked at Jason.
“You approached me because of him?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I felt something inside me break.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
The way a person breaks when they finally understand they were the only one who didn’t know the rules of the game they were playing.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Jason looked at me.
“I was supposed to find out if…”
He stopped.
“If what?””
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at the floor.
My mother started crying harder.
May you like
And then Jason finally said the words that changed everything.
“I was supposed to find out if you were really my sister.””
