Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden For Years
The room changed the moment I looked at Daniel.
Because he looked guilty.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Guilty.
“You were there.””
It wasn’t a question.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Emily…”
“You were there the night my father disappeared.””
Nobody moved.
Jason looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Daniel rubbed his hands together nervously.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I almost laughed.
“Does anyone in this family have another sentence?””
My voice cracked.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I repeated it.
“That’s all anyone ever says.””
Daniel looked older suddenly.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like carrying the secret had finally become too heavy.
“I was there.””
My chest tightened.
“Tell me everything.””
He looked at my mother.
She nodded slowly.
And I hated that.
Even now, they were still communicating without me.
Still sharing information I wasn’t allowed to have.
Daniel sat down.
“Your father called me that night.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted answers.””
“About my mother?””
He nodded.
“He knew about our past.””
I clenched my fists.
“And?””
“He wanted to know if I was your biological father.””
I looked away.
“So what happened?””
Daniel sighed.
“I met him outside an old restaurant.””
“Did they fight?””
“No.””
That surprised me.
“No?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Your father was angry, but he wasn’t violent. He was hurt.””
My eyes burned.
“That sounds like him.””
Daniel nodded.
“He told me something I never forgot.””
“What?””
“He said, ‘Emily is my daughter because I chose to be her father.’”
The tears came instantly.
I looked down.
Because even after twenty years, those words still felt like my father standing in front of me.
Daniel continued.
“He said he didn’t care about biology. He only cared about protecting you.””
I whispered:
“Then what happened?””
Daniel looked away.
“He left.””
My heart dropped.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
I stood up.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I followed him outside.””
“And?””
“And I saw another car.””
The room went silent.
“What car?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn’t know who it belonged to.””
“Did you see the person?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“You did.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who?””
My voice became louder.
Daniel finally looked at me.
“It was someone from your father’s family.””
My mother gasped.
Jason looked confused.
“Who?””
Daniel reached into his coat pocket.
My body tensed.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do.””
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Something your father gave me before he left.””
My heart started racing.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost smiled.
Of course.
Another person afraid.
Daniel placed the envelope on the table.
“Your father told me if anything happened to him, this was supposed to reach you.””
I stared at the envelope.
Twenty years.
A message from my father had been sitting somewhere all this time.
Waiting.
My hand moved toward it.
Then stopped.
Because my mother suddenly stood up.
“Emily, don’t.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She was crying.
“Because once you open that, everything changes.””
I stared at her.
“Everything already changed.””
She shook her head.
“No, you don’t understand.””
Her voice became desperate.
“There are things in that envelope that will destroy this family.””
I looked at Jason.
At Daniel.
At my mother.
Then at the envelope.
And I realized something.
They weren’t afraid because of what I would discover.
They were afraid because my father had left behind proof.
Proof that could reveal who was responsible for the biggest lie of my life.
I picked up the envelope.
And before I opened it, my phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
From Rachel.
