Chapter 5: The Secret Bloodline

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

The room was silent.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that comes when something impossible has just been said, and everyone is waiting for your mind to catch up.

“Your sister?””

The words barely came out.

I looked at Jason.

Then at my mother.

Then at Daniel.

Nobody looked surprised.

That was the part that destroyed me.

They had all known.

Everyone except me.

Jason took a step forward.

“Emily, please let me explain.””

I raised my hand.

“No.””

He stopped.

I shook my head slowly.

“Do not explain anything yet.””

My voice cracked.

“I need to understand how I became the last person to know something about my own life.””

My mother wiped her face.

“Emily…”

“No, Mom.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to comfort me right now.””

She looked like I had slapped her.

But I didn’t care.

Because the woman standing in front of me wasn’t the same woman who used to hold my hand when I was scared.

She was someone who had been protecting a secret from me for years.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Your mother and I knew this conversation would eventually happen.””

I looked at him.

“Eventually?””

I laughed.

“You mean after I walked in and found my boyfriend in my mother’s bedroom?””

Nobody answered.

The shame on their faces told me enough.

Jason looked down.

“Emily, I never wanted it to happen this way.””

“How did you want it to happen?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Exactly.

Because there was no good version of this story.

I crossed my arms.

“Start from the beginning.””

My mother sat down.

Daniel remained standing.

Jason looked like he wanted to disappear.

Finally, my mother spoke.

“When I was younger, before I met your father, I was with Daniel.””

I listened quietly.

“Daniel and I were serious,” she continued.

“But things ended badly.””

Daniel nodded.

“I was young. I made mistakes.””

“And then?””

My mother looked at me.

“Then I found out I was pregnant.””

My heart tightened.

I already knew where this was going.

“But Daniel didn’t know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The room felt colder.

“I was afraid,” she whispered.

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Of losing you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered.

“Because my family situation was complicated. I had money, expectations, and people around me who would have tried to control everything.””

My mother looked down.

“So I left.””

“And you raised me alone.””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“All these years, you knew who my father was?””

She nodded.

That hurt.

More than I expected.

“You let me grow up believing Dad was my biological father.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He loved you.””

“That’s not the point.””

I looked away.

“The point is everyone made decisions about my life without me.””

Nobody argued.

Because they couldn’t.

Then I looked at Jason.

“And you?””

He swallowed.

“My father found out about you years ago.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He hired someone to look into your mother’s past.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I wanted to know if Emily was my daughter.””

I shook my head.

“So what? You sent your son to investigate me?””

Jason closed his eyes.

“At first, yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“At first?””

He nodded.

“But then I met you.””

I laughed softly.

“Convenient.””

“It wasn’t fake.””

“How would I know?””

He looked at me.

“Because I fell in love with you.””

I stared at him.

The cruelest part was that I believed him.

That was what made everything worse.

The kisses.

The late-night conversations.

The way he knew exactly how to make me smile.

Were those moments real?

Or was I just part of some family mystery he was trying to solve?

My mother suddenly spoke.

“There is something else.””

I looked at her.

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Jason didn’t know the truth when he first met you.””

I frowned.

“What truth?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“The pregnancy…”

My stomach dropped.

She continued.

“The baby is not Jason’s.””

Nobody moved.

I stared.

“What?””

Jason looked shocked.

For the first time that night, he looked genuinely confused.

“What are you saying?””

My mother started crying.

“I made a mistake.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Diane…”

“No,” she said.

Her voice shook.

“She deserves the truth.””

I looked between them.

My entire body felt numb.

“You said Jason was the father.””

“I was wrong.””

The room spun.

I grabbed the back of the chair.

“Then whose baby is it?””

Nobody answered immediately.

And that silence scared me more than anything.

Because whatever the answer was…

It was going to destroy someone.

May you like

Then my mother whispered:

“The father is someone you know.””
