Chapter 3: The Man At The Door

The name meant nothing to me.

But the fear on my mother’s face meant everything.

“Daniel?”” I repeated.

My mother didn’t answer.

She just stared at the front door like she was hoping whoever was standing outside would disappear.

Jason stepped back.

That was when I noticed something.

He wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t surprised.

He knew exactly who Daniel was.

And suddenly, the betrayal I thought I understood became something much bigger.

I walked closer to my mother.

“Who is Daniel?””

Her lips trembled.

“Emily, you need to leave.””

I stared at her.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“After everything I just found out, you want me to leave?””

She looked toward the door again.

“Please.””

I had spent my entire life believing my mother was the person who would protect me from the world.

Now she was the person asking me to walk away from the truth.

The knocking came again.

This time louder.

Jason whispered, “I’ll handle it.””

I turned sharply.

“You’ll handle it?””

He looked at me.

“Emily—”

“No. You don’t get to handle anything anymore.””

I reached for the door before anyone could stop me.

My mother grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t.””

I looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

The fear in her eyes was no longer about hurting me.

It was about what would happen if that door opened.

I slowly pulled away.

Then I opened it.

A man stood on the porch.

He looked to be in his late fifties.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Calm expression.

The kind of person who looked like he was used to people listening when he spoke.

His eyes moved from me to my mother.

Then to Jason.

And his expression changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

“Well,” he said quietly.

“I guess the secret is out.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at my mother.

“Secret?””

The man stepped inside without being invited.

Jason immediately looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel, you shouldn’t be here.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“That’s interesting coming from you.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What is going on?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Jason.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“Emily…”

“Tell me.””

My voice shook, but I didn’t care.

I needed the truth.

Daniel removed his coat and placed it over a chair.

Then he looked at my mother.

“You were supposed to tell her.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I tried.””

“No, Diane,” Daniel said.

“You waited.””

That sentence cut through the room.

I looked at my mother.

“Tell me what?””

She sat down slowly.

“I met Daniel before Jason.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It means your mother and I have known each other for years.””

I stared.

“Years?””

Jason stepped forward.

“Emily, please don’t make this worse.””

I turned toward him.

“Worse?””

I couldn’t believe he said that.

“My boyfriend is having a baby with my mother, and now there’s a stranger in her house telling me there’s another secret.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I’m not a stranger.””

“Then who are you?””

The room went silent.

Finally, my mother whispered:

“Daniel is Jason’s father.””

I felt like the air had been knocked out of me.

I looked at Jason.

Then Daniel.

Then my mother.

“No.””

Nobody moved.

“No,” I repeated.

“That’s impossible.””

Jason looked down.

And that was when I knew.

It was true.

My mind started racing.

The pregnancy.

The lies.

The hidden relationship.

The strange fear when I asked who the father was.

None of it made sense.

“You all knew,” I whispered.

My mother started crying.

“Emily…”

“You all knew and nobody told me?””

Jason shook his head.

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“I was scared.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was scared.””

I looked around the room.

“Except me.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I know you hate us right now.””

“Hate?””

I looked at him.

“You don’t even understand what I’m feeling.””

He stayed quiet.

Because he didn’t.

Nobody did.

My entire future had collapsed in one afternoon.

The wedding plans.

The apartment we were saving for.

The life I thought I was building.

All of it was built on lies.

Then Daniel said something that made me freeze.

“Emily, there’s something else you need to know about Jason.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel glanced at Jason.

Jason immediately shook his head.

“Dad, don’t.””

My heart started pounding.

“What is it?””

Daniel looked back at me.

“He didn’t meet your mother by accident.””

The room became silent.

May you like

And in that moment, I realized the worst part wasn’t the betrayal.

It was that maybe I had never known Jason at all.
