Chapter 9: The Man Behind The Lies

I held the photograph so tightly that the edges cut into my fingers.

Ethan’s face stared back at me.

My son.

My boy.

The child who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms.

The child who waited by the window every evening when I came home from work.

The child who stepped in front of his little sister when he was afraid.

And someone wanted me to believe he wasn’t mine.

I looked at Rachel.

“Where is David?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

I threw the photograph onto the table.

“No more.””

Rachel flinched.

“No more secrets. No more excuses. No more protecting me by lying to me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You protected yourself.””

She looked down.

And she didn’t argue.

That hurt more than anything.

A few minutes later, I gathered Ethan and Lily.

I didn’t tell them everything.

They were children.

They didn’t need to carry the weight of adult mistakes.

I simply told them we were staying somewhere else for a while.

Lily hugged her rabbit.

“Is Mommy coming?””

I looked at Rachel.

She stood frozen near the doorway.

I didn’t know what to say.

Because I didn’t know who my wife was anymore.

“Not right now, sweetheart.””

Lily looked sad.

Ethan noticed.

He always noticed.

“We’re going to be okay, right Dad?””

I looked at my son.

“Yes.””

I paused.

Then said the words I needed him to hear.

“Nothing changes how much I love you.””

His eyes became wet.

“Even if…”

He stopped.

I crouched in front of him.

“Even if what?””

He looked away.

“Even if I’m not…”

His voice broke.

I grabbed his shoulders gently.

“Listen to me.””

He looked at me.

“You are my son.””

“But—”

“No.””

My voice softened.

“You hear me?””

He nodded.

“You are my son because I raised you. Because I held you. Because I was there when you needed me.””

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“Okay.””

That moment reminded me of something important.

Someone could question blood.

Someone could question records.

But nobody could erase seven years of love.

Later that afternoon, I met Mark at a quiet coffee shop.

I didn’t trust him.

But I needed information.

He sat across from me with a folder.

“I knew this day would come.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

His expression tightened.

“I tried.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You were in our lives without telling me.””

“I wasn’t there for Rachel.””

“Then why were you?””

Mark opened the folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Hospital records.

Legal forms.

Old reports.

“Because David was dangerous.””

I looked at the papers.

“Who is he?””

Mark leaned back.

“David Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

But the fear behind Mark’s voice did.

“He and Rachel married young. Their relationship ended badly.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because David threatened her.””

“With what?””

Mark looked at the papers.

“With Ethan.””

I waited.

“David believed Ethan could be used against her.””

“How?””

Mark pushed one document toward me.

It was a hospital investigation report.

“After Ethan’s birth, David tried to access medical records.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted leverage.””

I looked at the document.

“Leverage for what?””

Mark’s expression darkened.

“Money.””

I stared at him.

“Money?””

“David found out Rachel had married you. He knew you were building a successful life.””

My stomach turned.

“So this was never about Ethan.””

“Not originally.””

I looked at the papers again.

“Then why send the photo?””

Mark was silent.

Then he said:

“Because he knows Ethan is the one thing you would never walk away from.””

I looked up.

“Where is he?””

Mark hesitated.

“Daniel.””

“Where is he?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“Daniel Carter.””

My entire body went still.

“David?””

A low laugh.

“So Rachel finally told you.””

I stood.

“Where are you?””

“Does it matter?””

“You’ve been watching my family.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I’ve been watching what belongs to me.””

My grip tightened.

“Ethan is not something you own.””

Silence.

Then David said:

“You should ask Rachel why she was so desperate to hide the truth.””

I looked at Mark.

“What truth?””

David laughed softly.

“The truth about the night Ethan was born.””

My chest tightened.

“I already know.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You know what she wants you to know.””

The call started breaking.

“David.””

But before he disconnected, he said:

“Ask your wife who signed the original birth documents.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Mark looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

“What did he mean?””

Mark didn’t answer.

And that was when I realized something.

Even Mark had secrets.

That night, I went back to the house.

Rachel was sitting alone.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Did you find him?””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

“What did he say?””

I looked at her.

“He said I should ask who signed the original birth documents.””

Rachel went completely still.

The silence lasted only seconds.

But it told me everything.

“Rachel.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was hoping you would never find that.””

My heart sank.

“What did you do?””

May you like

She whispered:

“I changed the name.””
