Chapter 7: The Truth Behind The Records
I stared at the photo on my phone until the words blurred.
The hospital document.
The unfamiliar name.
The message beneath it.
Now ask who Ethan belongs to.
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.
Seven years of memories crashed through my mind.
The first time I held Ethan.
The first time he called me Dad.
The way he used to fall asleep on my chest when he was a baby.
The little drawings he made for me after work.
The way he stood in front of Lily even though he was terrified.
Was all of that built on a lie?
I looked at Rachel.
She was crying silently.
Not the angry tears she had shown before.
Real tears.
The kind that came when someone knew they had lost control of the story.
“Tell me,” I said.
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
“Tell me whose name is on that document.””
Rachel opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Mark stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
I turned toward him.
“Not another word from you.””
He stopped.
“I want to hear it from my wife.””
Rachel wiped her face.
“I was going to tell you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I held up the phone.
“You had seven years.””
She looked at the picture.
Her shoulders dropped.
“I was scared.””
I stared at her.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Scared of what? Me?””
Her eyes filled again.
“No.””
“Then what?””
Rachel sat down at the kitchen table.
The same table where Lily had reached for a piece of bread.
The same place where I had learned my daughter was afraid to eat.
“I was scared you would hate me.””
I stayed standing.
“Try me.””
She looked at her hands.
“When I was pregnant with Ethan, there were complications.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You know what I told you.””
The room became quiet.
Rachel continued.
“The doctors thought Ethan might have inherited a rare blood condition.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with the records?””
She looked at Mark.
He gave a small nod.
Then she looked back at me.
“Before Ethan was born, the hospital asked for additional family medical information.””
“And?””
“I gave them information.””
“Whose?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
“Daniel…”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Whose?””
Rachel whispered:
“My father’s.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“My father had a medical history I never told you about.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t explain the document.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Mark finally spoke.
“The document wasn’t a paternity record.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“It was a medical compatibility report.””
I froze.
“You’re saying that photo doesn’t prove Ethan isn’t mine?””
“No.””
Mark shook his head.
“It proves something else.””
“What?””
He looked serious.
“That someone wanted you to believe it did.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Rachel.
“Who sent me that message?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
But she answered too quickly.
I noticed.
“You do.””
She looked away.
“Rachel.””
Her hands trembled.
“There was someone else involved.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
Then Mark said quietly:
“Her ex-husband.””
I stared at him.
“Rachel was married before?””
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
I stepped back.
“How many things don’t I know?””
Rachel looked broken.
“I was nineteen.””
“That’s not the point.””
“I thought it was over.””
“Apparently it wasn’t.””
She shook her head.
“No. It wasn’t.””
I looked between them.
“What does he have to do with Ethan?””
Mark answered.
“Everything.””
Rachel stood quickly.
“Stop.””
“No more secrets.””
She looked at him with anger.
“You don’t get to act like you’re helping.””
Mark’s expression changed slightly.
“I’m trying to fix what you started.””
That sentence made me turn.
“What did she start?””
Neither spoke.
Then Lily’s voice came from the hallway.
“Daddy?””
All three of us froze.
I turned immediately.
She was standing there holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes moved between us.
“Are you and Mommy fighting again?””
The question broke me.
I walked to her.
“No, sweetheart.””
She looked at Rachel.
“Is Mommy leaving?””
I looked at Rachel.
For a second, I saw something.
Regret.
But then it disappeared.
“I don’t know yet,” Rachel whispered.
Lily’s face fell.
I picked her up.
“I’m here.””
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
“Promise?””
I held her tighter.
“I promise.””
Later that night, after the children were asleep, I sat alone in the living room.
I needed answers.
Not from Rachel.
Not from Mark.
From the truth.
I searched the hospital name from the document.
Then I found an old article.
A medical lawsuit.
Seven years earlier.
A patient named Rachel Carter.
A newborn.
A missing record.
My heart started racing.
I clicked the article.
The details were limited.
But one sentence stood out.
“The investigation revealed possible interference with patient files.””
Possible interference.
Someone had changed records.
Someone had hidden something.
Then my phone rang.
This time, I recognized the number.
Mark.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
“What?””
His voice was low.
“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””
“I’m done listening to half-truths.””
“This isn’t about Rachel.””
I went quiet.
“It’s about Ethan.””
My grip tightened.
“What about him?””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who altered those records is still watching your family.””
I stood up.
“What?””
“You need to get your children away from that house.””
My heart started pounding.
“Why?””
May you like
Because Mark’s next words made every piece fall into place.
“Because the person who sent you that photo was inside your home tonight.””
