Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The man outside didn’t knock again.

He simply stood there.

Waiting.

Like he knew I was looking at him.

Like he knew this was his house too.

I kept one hand on the door handle.

Behind me, Rachel whispered:

“Don’t open it.””

I turned around.

That surprised me.

After everything, she was telling me not to open the door.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because you don’t know what he wants.””

I looked back at the man outside.

Then at my wife.

“No. I think I finally know exactly what he wants.””

I opened the door.

The man looked to be in his early forties.

Calm.

Confident.

The kind of person who never needed to raise his voice because people usually listened.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

He looked past me.

At Rachel.

“She told you everything?””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Mark, leave.””

He ignored her.

That made me notice something.

Rachel wasn’t angry at him.

She was afraid of him.

“You know my name,” I said.

Mark looked at me.

“I know a lot about you.””

“Like what?””

He glanced at my hands.

The calluses.

The construction dust still trapped around my nails.

“You work too hard.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“You spend your life trying to protect people.””

My jaw tightened.

“And you spent years lying to me.””

Mark looked at Rachel.

“I warned you this would happen.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“You don’t get to threaten me.””

His expression remained calm.

“Threaten you?””

He shook his head.

“I’m the only person who kept your secret.””

I stepped between them.

“What secret?””

Neither answered.

That was when I knew.

Whatever happened between them was bigger than an affair.

Something else was buried.

Something connected to Ethan.

Mark looked at me.

“Do you want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to hear it from Rachel.””

I turned.

“Rachel.””

She looked down.

“Tell him.””

She remained silent.

Mark sighed.

“I’ll do it.””

Rachel immediately looked up.

“No.””

For the first time, anger replaced fear.

“Don’t.””

Mark ignored her.

“Seven years ago, Ethan was born with a serious medical issue.””

I looked at Rachel.

She nodded.

“I know.””

“No,” Mark said.

“You know he had complications. You don’t know what happened after.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

Mark looked directly at me.

“The hospital discovered a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He paused.

Then said:

“The original records were changed.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Rachel.

Her face was white.

“Changed by who?””

Mark didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Rachel.

“She was going to tell you.””

Rachel whispered:

“Stop.””

“Tell him.””

She shook her head.

“Please.””

I felt something breaking inside me.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“That you would leave.””

I stepped back.

“Leave because of what?””

She covered her mouth.

Then she said:

“When Ethan was born…”

A long pause.

“When Ethan was born, the doctors weren’t sure he would survive.””

I waited.

“And?””

Rachel looked at Mark.

Then back at me.

“Mark was the one who found the mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“The blood test.””

My heart started pounding.

“What about it?””

Mark spoke quietly.

“Daniel, the test showed something was wrong.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked at Rachel.

Then said the words that changed everything.

“Ethan’s original records didn’t match the information Rachel gave the hospital.””

I felt the room spinning.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

A photo.

I opened it.

It was an old hospital document.

And at the bottom was a name.

Not mine.

Not Rachel’s.

Another man’s name.

The message underneath contained only five words.

“Now ask who Ethan belongs to.””
