Chapter 8: The Person In The House
I didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
After Mark’s call, every sound in the house felt different.
The creak of the floor.
The hum of the refrigerator.
The wind hitting the windows.
Everything sounded like a warning.
I checked every lock twice.
Then I sat outside Lily’s room until morning.
My daughter slept peacefully.
Completely unaware that adults had turned her home into a battlefield.
Ethan woke up first.
He found me sitting there.
“Dad?””
I looked up.
“Hey, buddy.””
“Did you sleep?””
I forced a smile.
“A little.””
He knew I was lying.
Children always know.
He sat beside me.
“Are we going somewhere?””
I looked at him.
“Why would you ask that?””
He shrugged.
“Because Mom packs when she’s angry.””
My chest tightened.
“How many times has she done that?””
He looked down.
“A few.””
A few.
Another thing I didn’t know.
I reached for his shoulder.
“Ethan.””
“Yeah?””
“Did you ever feel scared at home?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he nodded.
“Sometimes.””
The honesty hurt.
“What scared you?””
He whispered:
“When Mommy got phone calls.””
“Why?””
“Because after those calls, she was different.””
I leaned closer.
“What do you mean?””
“She would tell us to stay in our rooms.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who called her?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked toward the kitchen.
Rachel was standing there.
Listening.
She looked exhausted.
“Ethan, go help Lily get ready.””
He looked at me.
I nodded.
“It’s okay.””
When he left, I faced Rachel.
“How long?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“You know exactly.””
She sat down.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was calm now.
Too calm.
“You said you wanted another chance. Fine. Start with the truth.””
She covered her face.
“I was being controlled.””
I stared at her.
“By Mark?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Her silence returned.
The same silence that had destroyed us.
“Rachel.””
She whispered:
“His name is David.””
The room went still.
“Your ex-husband?””
She nodded.
I felt sick.
“What does he want?””
She looked toward the stairs.
“I don’t know anymore.””
“That’s not good enough.””
Rachel started crying.
“He found me years after we married.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he threatened me.””
I stared at her.
“With what?””
She looked at me.
“With Ethan.””
I felt my heart stop.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel wiped her tears.
“When Ethan was born, David was trying to get back into my life.””
“And?””
“He found out about the medical issue.””
She lowered her voice.
“He used it to control me.””
I stepped back.
“So all these years…”
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“No. You were hiding things.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time, she didn’t argue.
That made it worse.
Then the front door opened.
Both of us turned.
I immediately moved toward the hallway.
Nobody should have been able to enter.
I grabbed the nearest object.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then I saw it.
A small envelope on the floor.
My name was written on it.
Daniel.
I picked it up.
Rachel’s face changed.
“Don’t open it.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because David likes leaving messages.””
My hands tightened around the envelope.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A picture of Ethan.
Taken yesterday.
At school.
My blood went cold.
On the back of the photo were six words.
“You were never his father.””
I looked at Rachel.
Then at the stairs where my son had disappeared.
May you like
And I realized the person who had been watching us wasn’t trying to destroy my marriage.
They were trying to take my son away.
