Chapter 4: The Truth Ethan Carried
I drove to Ethan’s school faster than I had ever driven anywhere.
My hands were tight around the steering wheel.
The message kept replaying in my head.
Ask your wife why your son isn’t really your son.
I wanted to believe it was a lie.
A cruel trick.
But after everything I had discovered, I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
When I reached the school office, Ethan was sitting in a chair near the front desk.
His backpack was on the floor.
His eyes were red.
The second he saw me, he ran over.
“Dad.””
I knelt down.
“What happened?””
He looked at the teacher.
Then at me.
“I didn’t do anything.””
“I know.””
The teacher, Mrs. Collins, sat across from us.
“Daniel, Ethan had an emotional moment during class.””
I looked at my son.
“What happened, buddy?””
Ethan squeezed his backpack strap.
“Someone asked me about Mommy.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“Another kid.””
Mrs. Collins looked uncomfortable.
“What did they say?””
Ethan looked down.
“They said their dad saw my mom with someone.””
The room went silent.
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What someone?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Mrs. Collins leaned forward.
“Ethan became upset when another student mentioned a man named Mark.””
My heart dropped.
Again.
That name.
Always that name.
I thanked the teacher and took Ethan home.
The entire drive was quiet.
Finally, he spoke.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Are you mad at me?””
I looked at him in the mirror.
“No.””
“Even if I tell you something?””
My chest tightened.
“Especially then.””
He looked out the window.
“Mom said I shouldn’t tell you.””
I pulled over.
Not because I was angry.
Because I needed him to know I was listening.
I turned around.
“Ethan, whatever it is, you can tell me.””
He played with the zipper on his backpack.
“One time, when you were gone for three days…”
His voice became smaller.
“Mommy had someone come over.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did he look like?””
Ethan thought.
“He was tall.””
My heart pounded.
“Anything else?””
“He called Mommy ‘Rachel.’”
I frowned.
“Anything else?””
Ethan looked at me.
“He said you would never know.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had worked overtime.
I missed birthdays.
I missed school events.
I told myself I was protecting my family.
But while I was building a future, someone else had been entering my home.
I drove back.
Rachel was there.
Standing in the driveway.
Waiting.
That alone told me she knew.
I got out of the car.
“You talked to Ethan’s school?””
Her face changed.
“I heard you were asking questions.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
She looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“Daniel, we need to talk privately.””
“No.””
Her eyebrows lifted.
“Excuse me?””
“You don’t get private conversations anymore.””
I pointed toward the house.
“You lied to me for years.””
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“You’re believing a child over me?””
I stepped closer.
“I’m believing what I saw.””
She looked away.
For the first time, she seemed nervous.
“Daniel…”
“Who is Mark?””
Nothing.
No answer.
That silence told me more than words.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
I saw fear flash across her face.
“What did he say?””
She quickly turned the phone away.
Too late.
I saw the preview.
“Tell him the truth before I do.””
Rachel looked up.
And I knew.
She wasn’t scared of me finding out.
She was scared of someone else revealing it first.
I took one step forward.
“Rachel.””
She backed away.
“Daniel, please.””
That word shocked me.
Please.
I had never heard fear in her voice before.
“Who is he?””
Rachel looked toward the house.
Toward Ethan.
Toward Lily.
Then she whispered:
“Mark is the reason you still have a family.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
But I couldn’t tell if they were real.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man spoke immediately.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“You want answers about your wife?””
I looked at Rachel.
She was completely pale.
The man continued.
“Then you need to know what happened the night Ethan was born.””
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because before he hung up, he said one final sentence.
“Your wife never told you who was in that hospital room.””
