Chapter 8: The Woman Daniel Erased

I couldn’t speak.

The words didn’t make sense.

“She never left?””

Olivia nodded slowly.

“No.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman standing beside Daniel looked happy.

Alive.

Real.

Not the person from the story I had been told.

The story Daniel created.

“He told me she abandoned Maya.””

Olivia’s expression hardened.

“He wanted you to believe that.””

“Why?””

“Because the truth would ruin everything.””

I felt anger rising.

“What truth?””

Olivia sat down.

“The woman in that picture is Claire.””

I repeated the name quietly.

“Claire.””

“She was with Daniel before you.””

I stared at the photo.

“Were they married?””

“No.””

“Then why hide her?””

Olivia hesitated.

“Because Claire knew something about Daniel.””

“What?””

“She knew he wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””

My hands tightened around the photograph.

“What happened to her?””

Olivia looked down.

“She tried to expose him.””

My heart sank.

“And?””

“She disappeared.””

The room went silent.

“Disappeared?””

Olivia nodded.

“After Maya was born.””

I stood up.

“You’re saying Daniel took my daughter from her mother?””

“I’m saying Daniel controlled the story.””

I paced across the room.

Every memory of Maya’s childhood suddenly felt different.

The way Daniel avoided talking about her birth.

The way he became uncomfortable whenever I asked questions.

The way he always said:

“Some things are better left in the past.””

I thought he was protecting Maya.

I thought he was protecting me.

But maybe he was protecting himself.

“I need proof.””

Olivia nodded.

“I know.””

“Not just stories.””

“I have more.””

She opened another drawer.

This time, she pulled out a small storage drive.

“I kept copies.””

I looked at it.

“What’s on there?””

“Emails. Messages. Records.””

My heart raced.

“Why didn’t you give this to the police?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Because I was afraid nobody would believe me.””

I understood that fear.

Because Daniel was good at making himself look trustworthy.

He was the calm one.

The responsible one.

The person everyone believed.

Until now.

My phone suddenly rang.

Daniel.

I stared at the screen.

Olivia went pale.

“He knows.””

“How?””

“He always knows when people get close to the truth.””

I answered.

“Hello?””

Daniel didn’t speak at first.

Then:

“Where are you?””

I said nothing.

“Maria.””

His voice was different.

No anger.

No fake kindness.

Just cold.

“You need to come back to the hospital.””

“Why?””

“Maya needs you.””

I looked at Olivia.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“She told the doctor something that could destroy this family.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she tell him?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“You really don’t want to know.””

I felt my anger rise.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“Actually, I’m starting to.””

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

“If you keep digging, you’re going to hurt Maya more than anyone.””

I looked at the photograph.

The woman who was supposed to have disappeared.

The woman Daniel erased.

“You already hurt her.””

The line went silent.

For the first time, Daniel had nothing to say.

I hung up.

When I returned to the hospital, Maya was awake.

She looked at my face.

And immediately knew.

“You found something.””

I sat beside her.

“Yes.””

She looked scared.

“About me?””

I held her hand.

“No.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“About Daniel.””

Maya swallowed.

“Mom…”

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“There’s something I remember.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

“When I was little…”

She took a breath.

“I remember a woman coming to our house.””

My heart stopped.

“What woman?””

“I don’t know.””

Maya closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“But she was crying.””

I felt a chill.

“What did she say?””

Maya opened her eyes.

“She called Daniel a liar.””

The room went quiet.

Then Maya whispered:

“She said she was my real mother.””

I couldn’t move.

Because after thirteen years of believing I knew my family…

I realized I might not know anything at all.

And then Maya said the one thing that changed everything.

“She didn’t leave, Mom.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

May you like

Maya’s voice trembled.

“Daniel made her leave.””
