Chapter 4: The Evidence He Buried

The name on the message belonged to someone I thought had disappeared from our lives forever.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Daniel’s former business partner.

I stared at the screen for several minutes.

I couldn’t understand why he would contact me.

Samuel had left the company two years earlier after what Daniel called a “professional disagreement.””

I remembered the night Daniel came home.

He was furious.

He told me Samuel had betrayed him.

He told me never to mention his name again.

And I listened.

Because that was what I had always done.

I listened.

I believed.

I stayed quiet.

But now my daughter was lying in a hospital bed because I had trusted the wrong people.

I replied with one sentence.

“Who are you, and what do you know?””

The response came almost immediately.

“Something I should have told you a long time ago.””

My heart started racing.

I looked at Maya sleeping.

Then I stepped into the hallway.

I called the number.

A man answered after one ring.

“Maria.””

His voice was exactly how I remembered.

Calm.

Serious.

“Samuel, what is this about?””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Daniel.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me the truth.””

“I’m trying to.””

“No. I need the truth now.””

He sighed.

“Daniel has been controlling information around Maya for months.””

My stomach tightened.

“What information?””

“Her medical symptoms.””

I gripped the phone.

“How would you know?””

“Because I saw the records.””

I froze.

“What records?””

“Maria, before I left the company, Daniel asked me to help with something.””

“What?””

“He wanted access to a health insurance account.””

I felt confused.

“Why?””

“At the time, he told me it was for paperwork.””

“And?””

“And later, I found out he was tracking every medical expense connected to your family.””

I leaned against the wall.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if someone is trying to avoid questions.””

My breathing slowed.

“Samuel, what are you saying?””

He lowered his voice.

“I think Daniel knew Maya needed medical attention and was trying to prevent records from being created.””

The hallway suddenly felt freezing.

“No.””

“Maria…”

“No. You don’t understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to reject his words.

I wanted to believe Daniel had made mistakes.

That he was careless.

That he was selfish.

But not this.

Not deliberately.

“Why didn’t you tell me before?””

His silence answered before he did.

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

I looked around.

The hospital hallway was empty.

“What?””

“He said if I spoke about what I found, he would destroy my career.””

I felt sick.

“Why contact me now?””

“Because I saw the news about Maya being admitted.””

“You saw?””

“Someone posted about it.””

I looked at my phone.

Nobody in my family had posted anything.

Which meant someone else had.

“How did Daniel know you saw?””

“He doesn’t.””

“Then why are you warning me?””

Samuel hesitated.

“Because I made a mistake once.””

“What mistake?””

“I believed Daniel was only protecting himself.””

His voice became heavier.

“Then I realized he was protecting something else.””

I didn’t speak.

“Maria, you need to look into what happened before Maya got sick.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you need to find out who benefits when she stays silent.””

The call ended.

I stood there, staring at my phone.

For the first time, I wasn’t just angry.

I was afraid.

Because this was bigger than a husband refusing to admit his stepdaughter was sick.

This was planned.

When I returned to Maya’s room, she was awake.

“Mom?””

I walked over.

“Hey.””

She studied my face.

“Did you find something?””

I sat beside her.

“I talked to someone who knows Daniel.””

Her expression changed.

“Is he angry?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Then why do you look scared?””

I looked at my daughter.

Because children always notice the truth adults try to hide.

“I’m scared because I don’t understand why someone who says they love you would ignore your pain.””

Maya was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Mom…”

“Yes?””

“There’s something else I never told you about Daniel.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She looked toward the door.

Then she whispered:

“The night before I came to the hospital…”

She stopped.

“What happened?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I heard him talking to someone.””

“Who?””

Maya swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

She looked back at me.

“But I heard him say…”

My phone suddenly rang.

The screen lit up.

Daniel.

Maya looked at it.

And whispered:

“That’s the voice I heard.””

I stared at the phone.

Then I answered.

May you like

And the first thing Daniel said made my blood run cold.

“Maria, we need to talk before Maya tells you the rest.””
