Chapter 5: The Conversation He Never Wanted Me to Hear

For a moment, I couldn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone, calm and controlled.

Too controlled.

The same tone he used whenever he wanted me to believe he was the reasonable one.

“Maria?””

I stared at Maya.

She was watching me from the hospital bed.

Waiting.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

A pause.

“Outside the hospital.””

My stomach tightened.

“You’re here?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then he sighed.

“Because I know you’re upset, and I think you’re letting fear control you.””

I almost laughed.

Fear.

That was the word he chose.

Not concern.

Not love.

Fear.

As if my fear for my daughter was the problem.

“Daniel, Maya told me you knew she was sick.””

Silence.

Only two seconds.

But those two seconds told me everything.

“Maria, you don’t understand what happened.””

“I’m asking you to explain.””

“It’s complicated.””

“No.””

I looked at Maya.

“It’s actually very simple. Our daughter was in pain, and you told her she was pretending.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

His breathing changed.

“Can we not do this over the phone?””

“Why?””

“Because emotions are high.””

I felt my anger rising.

“Your daughter is in a hospital bed, Daniel.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

My voice broke.

“Because I don’t understand how you could watch her get weaker every day and do nothing.””

“I was handling it.””

Those three words made me freeze.

“What did you say?””

“I said I was handling it.””

I looked at Maya.

She looked away.

Like she already knew.

“Daniel, you are not a doctor.””

“I know that.””

“Then why did you decide she didn’t need one?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than any confession.

“Come home,” he finally said.

“No.””

“Maria.””

“No.””

I lowered my voice.

“I’m staying with Maya.””

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“I made a mistake when I believed you.””

For the first time, his voice changed.

Not angry.

Not calm.

Afraid.

“You need to be careful about what you accuse me of.””

I stared at the wall.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

“It sounds like one.””

“Maria, I’m trying to protect this family.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Protect us?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“From the truth.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding my phone.

The truth.

Those words stayed in my mind.

Because Daniel had just admitted something without realizing it.

There was something he didn’t want me to know.

After I hung up, Maya looked at me.

“Did he get mad?””

“No.””

“That’s worse.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked nervous.

“When Daniel is angry, you know it.””

She pulled the blanket closer.

“But when he gets quiet, that’s when he starts planning.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“How long have you been scared of him?””

Maya looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt the most.

Because fear had become normal for her.

The next morning, the doctor came in with another update.

He explained the next steps and answered my questions.

Maya would need continued care, and they were still investigating what had caused her symptoms to become so severe.

After he left, I asked Maya something I had been afraid to ask.

“Did Daniel ever stop you from seeing a doctor before?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she nodded.

“Once.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

I sat down beside her.

“Tell me.””

She took a breath.

“I woke up in the middle of the night because the pain was really bad.””

My heart broke.

“I went downstairs because I wanted to call you.””

“You wanted to call me?””

She nodded.

“But Daniel saw me.””

“What did he do?””

“He took my phone.””

My entire body went still.

“He said you were sleeping and I shouldn’t bother you.””

I felt sick.

“Maya…”

“He told me he would handle it.””

“Did he give your phone back?””

“Later.””

“How much later?””

She looked away.

“The next morning.””

I closed my eyes.

My daughter had been alone.

Scared.

Sick.

And I had been sleeping in the next room.

I thought everything was fine.

That afternoon, I met Samuel in a small coffee shop near the hospital.

I almost didn’t recognize him.

He looked older.

Tired.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

“You came,” he said.

“I need answers.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

I sat across from him.

“What exactly did you find?””

Samuel looked around before speaking.

“Daniel was worried about medical costs.””

“That’s all?””

“No.””

He lowered his voice.

“He was worried about something showing up in records.””

I stared at him.

“What kind of records?””

“Insurance records. Medical history. Anything connected to Maya’s condition.””

“Why?””

“That’s what I couldn’t understand.””

He opened his laptop.

Then immediately closed it.

“No screens.””

I noticed.

“You’re afraid.””

“Yes.””

“Of Daniel?””

Samuel looked at me.

“You should be more afraid of what he’s willing to hide.””

My heart pounded.

“What did you find?””

He hesitated.

Then he reached into his bag and placed a small envelope on the table.

“I saved this before I left.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Something Daniel didn’t know I kept.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Why give it to me now?””

“Because I saw Maya yesterday.””

He swallowed.

“She looked exactly like my daughter did before we found out she was seriously ill.””

I softened slightly.

“I’m sorry.””

He nodded.

Then pushed the envelope closer.

“Maria, before you open this, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“If Daniel finds out I gave you this…”

He stopped.

“What?””

“He won’t just be angry.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Samuel looked at me with fear in his eyes.

“I’m saying Daniel has spent years making sure nobody questions him.””

I slowly reached for the envelope.

My fingers touched the paper.

And before I opened it, my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

One sentence.

“You’re meeting Samuel because you think he knows the truth.””

I froze.

A second message appeared.

“But you don’t know what he did to Maya.””

I looked up at Samuel.

His face had gone pale.

Because he had seen the message too.

May you like

And then he whispered the words that made my heart stop.

“He knows I contacted you.””
