Chapter 7: The Secret From Thirteen Years Ago

I couldn’t breathe.

The woman’s words repeated in my mind.

Thirteen years.

A secret Daniel had been hiding for thirteen years.

My daughter was thirteen years old.

The connection hit me so hard that I had to sit down.

“Who are you?”” I asked again.

“My name is Olivia.””

“Olivia what?””

“Olivia Bennett.””

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

“I don’t know you.””

“You weren’t supposed to.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What does that mean?””

There was a pause.

Then she whispered:

“I used to work for Rachel.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why would Rachel’s assistant call me?””

“Because Rachel knows what happened.””

I looked through the hospital room window.

Maya was sleeping.

Peaceful.

Unaware that her entire life was connected to something hidden before she could even remember.

“Tell me.””

Olivia took a shaky breath.

“Thirteen years ago, before Maya was born, Daniel and Rachel were involved in something they never wanted anyone to find out.””

“What?””

“I can’t explain over the phone.””

“Then explain now.””

“I need to meet you.””

I almost refused.

But something stopped me.

Every person who had warned me so far had been afraid.

Samuel.

Maya.

Now Olivia.

They were all afraid of Daniel.

And that terrified me.

“Where?””

She gave me an address.

A small apartment building across town.

Before hanging up, she said one more thing.

“Maria, don’t tell Daniel I contacted you.””

“Why?””

“Because if he knows I’m talking…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“He’ll make sure nobody believes me.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then I looked at Maya.

I hated leaving her.

But I knew I couldn’t protect her without understanding what I was fighting.

I asked the nurse to watch her while I stepped out.

Twenty minutes later, I was standing outside Olivia’s apartment.

The building was old.

The hallway lights flickered.

Everything about the place felt like a warning.

When Olivia opened the door, I immediately recognized fear in her face.

She was younger than I expected.

Maybe late thirties.

Her hands were shaking.

“You’re Maria.””

“Yes.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The apartment was small.

Almost empty.

Like someone who didn’t plan to stay long.

“Why are you helping me?””

Olivia looked toward the window.

“Because I should have helped someone years ago.””

I sat down.

“Tell me what happened.””

She stayed standing.

“Before Maya was born, Daniel and Rachel were preparing for a lawsuit.””

“Against who?””

She swallowed.

“A medical clinic.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with Maya?””

“Everything.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Explain.””

Olivia walked to a drawer and pulled out an old folder.

She placed it on the table.

“I worked for Rachel when she managed Daniel’s office.””

I looked at the folder.

“What’s inside?””

“Proof that Daniel knew about a medical issue connected to Maya before you did.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside were old notes.

Appointments.

Dates.

Names.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw something.

Maya’s name.

I looked up.

“She wasn’t even born yet.””

Olivia nodded.

“That’s why Daniel has been afraid.””

I felt confused.

“What are you saying?””

She sat down.

“Maria, before Maya was born, Daniel and Rachel discovered something about the pregnancy.””

My hands went cold.

“No.””

“They were worried there would be complications.””

I stared at her.

“And they didn’t tell me?””

Olivia looked away.

“They made decisions without you.””

The room became silent.

I couldn’t process it.

“You’re saying Daniel knew something about Maya before she was born?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Olivia hesitated.

“A family medical history.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Daniel knew Maya might have health problems connected to his side of the family.””

My mind raced.

“So why hide her symptoms?””

“Because if doctors connected everything, they would ask questions.””

“What questions?””

Olivia looked directly at me.

“Questions about why Daniel never disclosed certain information.””

I felt sick.

This wasn’t just about money.

It wasn’t just about being careless.

He had been afraid of doctors discovering something.

“Why would he hide that from me?””

Olivia’s expression softened.

“Because Daniel has always cared more about protecting his image than admitting mistakes.””

I looked down.

That sentence felt painfully familiar.

“How do you know all this?””

She was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because I helped him.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“I didn’t understand what I was helping him do at the time.””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“I thought he was trying to protect his family.””

“And now?””

“Now I know he was protecting himself.””

I closed the folder.

“Why didn’t you come forward earlier?””

Olivia looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Daniel?””

She nodded.

“He threatened everyone who knew.””

I stood.

“I need to take this to the doctor.””

“Wait.””

I stopped.

Olivia looked terrified.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

She reached into the folder and pulled out a small photograph.

She handed it to me.

It showed Daniel.

Rachel.

And another person.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

But the date written on the back made my blood run cold.

It was taken three months before Maya was born.

“Who is she?””

Olivia didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“That is the woman Daniel told everyone he had never met.””

I stared at the picture.

“Who?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Maya’s biological mother.””

My entire world stopped.

Because Daniel had always told me Maya’s birth mother abandoned her.

He told me she left before Maya was born.

He told me there was nothing else to know.

But now there was a picture.

A woman.

A secret.

And thirteen years of lies.

I looked at Olivia.

“Where is she now?””

Olivia’s face changed.

May you like

And I knew the answer would hurt.

“She never left.””
