Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden in the Records
I didn’t open the envelope.
Not immediately.
I couldn’t.
Because suddenly, the coffee shop around me felt different.
Every person walking past.
Every sound.
Every movement outside the window.
Everything made me feel like someone was watching.
“Maria,” Samuel said quietly.
I looked at him.
“How does he know?””
Samuel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“You said he didn’t know.””
“I thought he didn’t.””
My hands trembled.
For months, Daniel had convinced me I was overreacting.
That I was emotional.
That I imagined problems.
But now, every instinct inside me was screaming.
“Open it,” Samuel said.
“What?””
“The envelope.””
I looked down.
“Why?””
“Because whatever Daniel knows, he can’t erase what’s already there.””
I slowly opened it.
Inside were copies of documents.
Not medical records.
Not exactly.
They were insurance communications.
Dates.
Requests.
Notes.
I scanned the pages.
Then I saw Maya’s name.
My breathing stopped.
“What is this?””
Samuel leaned closer.
“Look at the dates.””
I did.
The first request was from two months earlier.
The same week Maya first complained about pain.
My stomach turned.
“What am I looking at?””
Samuel pointed.
“Someone contacted the insurance company asking about limiting unnecessary medical procedures.””
I looked closer.
The name was hidden.
But the account information was familiar.
Daniel.
I felt numb.
“He was trying to prevent coverage?””
Samuel nodded.
“That’s what it looks like.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the papers again.
There was another date.
A week later.
Another request.
Another delay.
My daughter’s health had become a paperwork problem to him.
Not a child needing help.
A problem.
I stood up.
“I need to go.””
“Maria.””
“I need to see Daniel.””
Samuel grabbed the envelope.
“Don’t go alone.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Maria, people like Daniel don’t like losing control.””
I hated that he was right.
But I couldn’t sit there anymore.
I needed answers.
When I arrived at the hospital, Daniel was standing outside Maya’s room.
Waiting.
His face was calm.
Too calm.
“You went to see Samuel.””
Not a question.
A statement.
I stopped walking.
“How do you know everything?””
He ignored my question.
“You’re letting a bitter man manipulate you.””
“Did you stop my daughter from getting medical care?””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You really believe that?””
“I asked you a question.””
He looked toward Maya’s room.
“She’s emotional.””
My heart dropped.
“You’re still doing it.””
“Doing what?””
“Blaming her.””
His jaw tightened.
“I’m trying to keep this family together.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re trying to keep yourself safe.””
For the first time, Daniel looked angry.
“Be careful.””
There it was again.
That warning.
That control.
I lowered my voice.
“Maya told me about the night she tried to call me.””
His face changed.
“What did she say?””
I noticed.
Not concern.
Fear.
“You took her phone.””
“I was calming her down.””
“You kept her from calling me.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
He looked away.
And I knew.
He didn’t have an answer.
A nurse walked past us.
Daniel immediately changed his expression.
The calm husband returned.
The caring father.
The performance.
But I had finally seen behind it.
And I couldn’t unsee it.
That night, after Daniel left, I sat beside Maya.
She looked exhausted.
“Mom?””
“Yes?””
“Is he mad?””
I held her hand.
“Yes.””
She looked scared.
“But he can’t hurt you anymore.””
She was quiet.
Then she whispered:
“There’s something I heard before I got sick.””
“What?””
She looked toward the window.
“I heard Daniel talking to Aunt Rachel.””
My heart sank.
“What did they say?””
Maya closed her eyes.
“I heard Rachel say…”
She stopped.
“What?””
“She said, ‘If Maria finds out what happened before the wedding, everything falls apart.’”
I froze.
“The wedding?””
Maya nodded.
“I don’t know what they meant.””
I stared at her.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t just about hiding Maya’s illness.
There was something older.
Something connected to Daniel’s past.
Something that happened before I ever knew him.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Maria, you need to leave Daniel before he destroys your family.””
I stood up.
“Who is this?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“My name is Rachel’s former assistant.””
My heart raced.
“Why are you calling me?””
A long pause.
Then she said:
“Because I know why Daniel was so desperate to keep Maya away from doctors.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because the last time Maya was examined…”
Silence.
May you like
Then she finished:
“The doctor almost discovered the secret Daniel has been hiding for thirteen years.””
