Chapter 8: Behind the Red Door

The warehouse had been abandoned for eleven years.

According to property records, Terrence Vale had purchased it through a shell company six months earlier.

Detective Collins called Daniel from outside the perimeter.

He put the phone on speaker so Vanessa could hear.

“We found three red loading doors.””

Vanessa stood beside Nia's hospital bed.

Ava had finally fallen asleep on a chair.

Daniel asked, “Does the key fit?””

“We're checking.””

Then silence.

Metal scraped through the phone.

A distant voice.

Then Collins returned.

“It fits door three.””

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.

“What's inside?””

“We're entering now.””

“Renee.””

Collins paused.

Vanessa's voice shook.

“Please.””

“I'll tell you what I can.””

The line remained open.

Daniel heard boots.

Radio chatter.

A door groaning.

Then:

“Police!””

Echoes.

“Clear!””

Another voice.

“Clear left!””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel felt helpless listening from miles away.

Then the phone crackled.

Collins stopped speaking.

Daniel's chest tightened.

“Detective?””

Nothing.

“Renee?””

Vanessa whispered, “Please.””

Finally Collins spoke.

“We found a room.””

“What kind of room?”” Daniel asked.

“Living space.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Is anyone there?””

Collins didn't answer immediately.

Daniel hated the pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Vanessa's knees buckled.

Daniel steadied her.

“Who?””

“We found a woman.””

Vanessa stopped breathing.

“Alive?””

Another pause.

“Alive.””

A sound escaped Vanessa that was half sob, half scream.

Nia's eyes widened.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa knelt beside her.

“They found somebody.””

“Is it Mommy?””

“We don't know yet.””

The phone crackled.

Collins's voice returned.

“Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“We need medical confirmation, but she identified herself.””

Vanessa squeezed Nia's hand.

“What did she say?””

“Her name is Simone Bennett.””

Nia burst into tears.

“Mommy!””

Vanessa lowered her forehead against the child's hand and cried with her.

Daniel stood behind them, one hand over his mouth.

Alive.

After seven months.

Alive.

Then Collins's voice changed.

“There's something else.””

Daniel stiffened.

“What?””

“Terrence is not here.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Where is he?””

“We don't know.””

Daniel stared toward the hospital doorway.

For the first time all night, the danger felt closer because the person at the center of it was still free.

Collins continued.

“Simone says he left several hours ago.””

“Did she say where he went?””

Silence.

Then:

“She says he went to the hospital.””

Daniel hung up before Collins finished.

“Security.””

Vanessa stood.

Daniel rushed into the hallway.

“Security!””

A nurse turned.

“Sir?””

“Call security now. Someone dangerous may be coming for this room.””

The nurse saw his face and immediately reached for the desk phone.

Daniel ran back inside.

“Vanessa, lock the door.””

“What?””

“Terrence is coming here.””

Nia began crying.

“No.””

Vanessa moved instantly.

She shut the door and pushed a chair beneath the handle.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

Ava woke.

“Daddy?””

He went to her.

“Baby, come here.””

She ran into his arms.

Nia's heart monitor accelerated.

Vanessa stood beside the bed.

“Nia, look at me.””

The child shook uncontrollably.

“He'll take me.””

“No.””

“He always finds me.””

Vanessa grabbed both of Nia's hands.

“Listen to me.””

Nia looked at her.

“He found you before because the adults around you kept helping him.””

Vanessa glanced toward Daniel.

“That ends tonight.””

Footsteps sounded in the hall.

Daniel moved in front of both girls.

Someone tried the handle.

Vanessa gasped.

Daniel braced himself.

“Hospital security!””

Relief washed through him.

He removed the chair.

Two guards entered, followed by a police officer.

“We're moving the patient.””

The officer looked at Daniel.

“Detective Collins warned us.””

They transferred Nia to a secure pediatric room on another floor.

Ava stayed with Daniel.

Vanessa refused to leave Nia.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then forty.

No Terrence.

Police checked every entrance.

Nothing.

Daniel's phone rang.

Collins.

He answered immediately.

“He isn't at the hospital,” she said.

“Then why did Simone say he was coming here?””

“We misunderstood.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She said he went to ‘the hospital.’”

“Yes.””

“She didn't mean this one.””

Vanessa leaned toward the phone.

“What hospital?””

“The old St. Anne's facility.””

Vanessa's face changed.

Daniel looked at her.

“What's there?””

“It closed years ago.””

Collins continued.

“Part of the property was converted into medical storage.””

Vanessa whispered, “My mother worked there.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“Before she retired.””

Nia was listening.

Daniel asked Collins, “Why would Terrence go there?””

“Simone thinks he keeps documents there.””

“What documents?””

“Records.””

“Of what?””

Collins's voice hardened.

“People.””

Daniel felt cold.

Vanessa asked, “What people?””

“We're still interviewing Simone.””

Then Collins said, “She claims Terrence has been blackmailing families for years.””

Daniel stared.

“How?””

“Medical histories. Immigration records. Addiction treatment.

Paternity records. Anything people wanted hidden.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“My mother had access.””

“Yes.””

Daniel understood.

Evelyn hadn't merely owed Terrence.

She had helped build his power.

Simone had discovered it.

That was why she disappeared.

Not just because of Nia.

Because she had evidence.

Detective Collins continued.

“Simone says she copied files from the old facility and hid them before Terrence caught her.””

“Where?””

“She doesn't know if they're still there.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Marcus.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“My father worked construction.””

“Yes.””

“He helped renovate St. Anne's.””

The room fell silent.

Daniel understood before she finished.

“He knew the building.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He could have hidden things.””

Nia suddenly spoke.

“The blue room.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What blue room?”” Daniel asked.

Nia frowned.

“Mommy talked about it.””

“When?””

“When we were hiding.””

“What did she say?””

“She said Grandpa Marcus knew the blue room.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Daniel asked, “Do you know where it is?””

Nia shook her head.

“But Grandma does.””

Vanessa stared at the floor.

Daniel saw the decision forming.

“No.””

Vanessa looked up.

“I didn't say anything.””

“I know that face.””

“She can tell police.””

“She has lied about everything.””

“Then I'll make her tell the truth.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

For the first time since the floor opened, Daniel didn't see panic.

He saw resolve.

“I spent my entire life letting my mother decide which truths I was allowed to know.””

Her voice steadied.

“She decided Simone's pain was inconvenient.””

“She decided Marcus didn't exist.””

“She decided Nia was something to trade.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I'm done letting her decide.””

Daniel wanted to stop her.

He also knew he couldn't.

Some doors had to be opened by the people who had been locked behind them.

An officer arranged for Vanessa to speak with Evelyn at the station by video.

Evelyn appeared on the screen twenty minutes later.

She looked older.

Vanessa sat directly in front of her.

“Where is the blue room?””

Evelyn's expression changed.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Mom.””

Nothing.

“They found Simone.””

Evelyn's face cracked.

Just a little.

“She is alive.””

Evelyn looked down.

Vanessa continued.

“Nia is alive.””

Evelyn's eyes closed.

“Daniel and Ava are alive.””

Vanessa's voice lowered.

“And you no longer get to decide who we sacrifice.””

Evelyn opened her eyes.

Vanessa asked again.

“Where is the blue room?””

A long silence.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Basement level B.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Evelyn continued.

“Past radiology.””

Vanessa didn't blink.

“Then?””

“There's a wall with three electrical panels.””

“And?””

Evelyn's lips trembled.

“Marcus built a false wall behind the third one.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“What did he hide there?””

May you like

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Proof that Terrence wasn't the only one involved.””
