Chapter 7: What Nia Remembered
Children's Hospital felt too bright for what they were about to hear.
Daniel hated everything about the fluorescent lights, the polished floors, the cheerful murals painted along the pediatric wing.
A cartoon giraffe smiled from the wall while his entire family collapsed around him.
Ava sat beside him in the waiting area, curled underneath his arm.
Vanessa was across from them.
She had barely spoken during the drive.
Evelyn remained with police.
Daniel wasn't sure whether she had been formally arrested yet.
He didn't care.
Detective Collins joined them ten minutes later.
“Nia has asked to speak with Vanessa.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Is that safe?””
“A child specialist is with her.””
Vanessa stood immediately.
Daniel didn't.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Please.””
He hesitated.
Then Ava touched his hand.
“Daddy.””
He looked down.
“She needs her aunt.””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
His daughter had more mercy left inside her than he did.
He stood.
They entered Nia's room together.
Nia looked impossibly small in the hospital bed.
An IV line ran into her arm.
Her hair had been cleaned, but exhaustion still hollowed her face.
When she saw Vanessa, fear crossed her expression.
Vanessa stopped at the doorway.
“I won't come closer.””
Nia watched her.
“I promise.””
The child specialist sat nearby.
Daniel stood beside Ava.
Nia looked at him.
“You came.””
“I said I would.””
Something relaxed in her face.
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Nia…”
The girl looked at her.
“I thought you left me.””
Vanessa's mouth trembled.
“I thought you were still in the room.””
Nia shook her head.
“The man came.””
Every adult became still.
Detective Collins leaned forward.
“What man?””
Nia looked around the room.
“My dad.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“When?””
“After Aunt Vanessa left food.””
“How did he get in?”” Collins asked.
“The little door.””
Daniel felt cold.
“He knew about the service entrance.””
Nia nodded.
“He had a key.””
Vanessa's head snapped up.
“No.””
Nia looked at her.
“He showed me.””
“What did he say?””
“He said Grandma told him.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel felt anger spread through his chest.
Evelyn hadn't simply been silent.
She had led Terrence to Nia.
Nia continued.
“He told me to come with him.””
“Did you?”” Collins asked.
She shook her head.
“I ran.””
“Through the wall?””
“Yes.””
“I went where Mommy showed me.””
Vanessa stared.
“Simone showed you the passage?””
Nia nodded.
“When?””
“A long time ago.””
“How long?””
Nia thought.
“When we first came to Grandma's house.””
Vanessa stepped forward before catching herself.
“You and Simone were here?””
Nia nodded.
“Mommy brought me at night.””
Daniel looked at Collins.
This contradicted Evelyn's story.
Nia remembered more.
“Mommy told me if anything happened, I should go behind the wall and keep going until I found the room with the blue pipes.””
Daniel pictured the crawlspace beneath Ava's bedroom.
“There are blue plumbing lines under the floor.””
Collins nodded.
“Then what happened?””
Nia swallowed.
“My dad chased me.””
Ava pressed closer to Daniel.
“I crawled really fast.””
Nia looked down at her hands.
“I heard him behind me.””
Vanessa began crying silently.
“I got to the hole. I fell.””
She touched her ankle beneath the blanket.
“He couldn't fit.””
Daniel realized why Terrence had never pulled her out.
The access narrowed sharply beneath Ava's room.
“Did he leave?”” Collins asked.
Nia shook her head.
“He stayed.””
Everyone froze.
“How long?”” Daniel asked.
Nia looked toward him.
“A long time.””
“Hours?””
She nodded.
“He kept talking.””
“What did he say?””
“He said nobody was coming.””
Vanessa looked away.
“He said Aunt Vanessa didn't really love me.””
Vanessa sobbed.
Nia watched her.
“I didn't believe him.””
That broke whatever remained of Vanessa's control.
She turned away, pressing a fist against her mouth.
Nia continued.
“He said Grandma was angry.””
Detective Collins asked, “Did your grandmother come too?””
Nia hesitated.
Then nodded.
Vanessa looked back.
“When?””
“The same night.””
Daniel's pulse accelerated.
“What did she do?””
“They argued.””
“Who?””
“Daddy and Grandma.””
“What did they say?””
Nia squeezed the hospital blanket.
“I couldn't hear everything.””
The child specialist said gently, “Only tell us what you remember.””
Nia nodded.
“Grandma said he wasn't supposed to touch me.””
Daniel looked at Collins.
Nia continued.
“Daddy said she didn't get to make rules anymore.””
Vanessa stared.
“Then Grandma said…”
Nia's brow furrowed.
“She said Simone was still alive.””
Silence swallowed the room.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“What?””
Nia looked at her.
“She said Mommy was still alive.””
Vanessa's knees nearly failed.
Daniel caught her.
“Where?””
Nia shook her head.
“Did she say where?”” Collins asked.
“No.””
“What did your father say?””
Nia whispered, “He told Grandma to shut up.””
Vanessa gripped Daniel's arm.
“Nia, listen to me.””
The child looked at her.
“Did your mother ever tell you where she was going?””
“No.””
“Did she give you anything?””
Nia thought.
Then touched her chest.
“My necklace.””
Vanessa stared.
“You weren't wearing one when Daniel found you.””
Nia looked frightened.
“Daddy took it.””
“What necklace?””
“It had Mommy's picture.””
Daniel frowned.
“A locket?””
Nia nodded.
“And something else.””
“What?””
Nia struggled to remember.
“A little paper.””
“What did it say?””
“I don't know.””
She looked embarrassed.
“I couldn't read the number.””
Detective Collins leaned closer.
“What number?””
“It was long.””
Daniel looked at Collins.
“A phone number?””
Nia shook her head.
“It had letters too.””
Collins's expression sharpened.
“Could it have been an address?””
Nia thought again.
“Maybe.””
Vanessa whispered, “Simone would have left something.””
Nia suddenly grabbed Vanessa's hand.
Everyone tensed.
Vanessa froze.
Nia whispered, “Mommy said if Aunt Vanessa ever found me, I should tell her something.””
Vanessa knelt beside the bed.
“What?””
Nia's eyes filled with tears.
“She said none of it was your fault.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
Nia continued.
“She said you were little too.””
Daniel watched his wife fold over herself.
He suddenly understood that Vanessa's lies had not started because she enjoyed secrets.
They had been taught.
Inherited.
Passed down like family furniture.
Hide what hurts.
Protect whoever has power.
Pretend survival is the same as safety.
He still couldn't forgive what she had done.
But anger became more complicated when you could see the shape of the wound that created it.
Detective Collins's phone buzzed.
She checked the screen.
“We found Terrence's vehicle.””
Vanessa stood.
“Where?””
“Abandoned near an industrial lot.””
“Is he there?””
“No.””
“What about the necklace?””
“We haven't searched the vehicle yet.””
Daniel asked, “What industrial lot?””
Collins gave the address.
Vanessa went rigid.
Daniel noticed.
“You know it.””
She nodded.
“My mother used to take us there.””
“Why?””
“There were storage buildings.””
Daniel's pulse increased.
“What kind?””
“Old freight warehouses.””
Nia heard them.
Her face changed.
“The red doors.””
Everyone turned.
“What?”” Collins asked.
Nia sat up.
“Mommy said red doors.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“When?””
“When she gave me the necklace.””
Nia's eyes widened with memory.
“She said if I ever got away from Daddy, go where the red doors are.””
Detective Collins was already moving.
She called her team.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
Collins turned.
“You're not coming.””
“If Simone is there—”
“This could be an active crime scene.””
“That's my wife's sister.””
“And Terrence Vale may be there.””
Daniel stopped.
Ava's fingers closed around his hand.
He looked down at her.
He had spent the entire night reacting to danger.
Now his daughter needed him not to chase it.
Vanessa understood too.
“You stay.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I'm going with Collins.””
“No.””
“Daniel.””
“You're not law enforcement.””
“Nia might need me to identify Simone.””
Collins shook her head.
“No civilians.””
Vanessa clenched her jaw.
Then Nia spoke.
“Aunt Vanessa.””
She reached beneath her pillow.
A nurse had apparently placed her personal belongings in a small bag nearby.
Nia pulled out something Daniel hadn't seen.
A folded piece of cloth.
She opened it.
Inside was a tiny brass key.
Vanessa stared.
“Where did you get that?””
“I hid it in my sock.””
“From who?””
“Daddy.””
Detective Collins took it carefully.
May you like
Nia whispered:
“It opens the red door.””
