Chapter 6: The Bloodline
Nobody moved.
The little recorder hissed in Daniel's hand.
Terrence isn't just Nia's father.
He's your father too.
Vanessa stared at the device as if it had become something alive.
“No.””
Her voice barely existed.
At the end of the hallway, Evelyn lowered her head.
Vanessa looked at her.
“No.””
Evelyn said nothing.
Vanessa stepped toward her mother.
“Tell me she's lying.””
“Vanessa—”
“Tell me Simone was lying.””
Evelyn's fingers tightened around her cane.
“You don't understand what things were like back then.””
Vanessa laughed.
One broken sound.
“That isn't an answer.””
Daniel remained beside the open compartment.
His mind was trying to organize something too ugly to understand.
Terrence Vale.
The violent man Vanessa had spent years fearing.
The man who had fathered Nia with Simone.
Was also Vanessa's father.
Daniel felt sick.
Vanessa approached Evelyn.
“How old was Simone when he met her?””
Evelyn's eyes hardened.
“Don't.””
“How old?””
“Vanessa.””
“How old was my sister?””
Daniel saw Detective Collins enter the corridor behind them.
She said nothing.
Evelyn finally answered.
“Seventeen.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“And he was already…”
She couldn't finish.
Evelyn looked away.
Vanessa opened her eyes again.
“My father.””
“Yes.””
The word shattered whatever remained.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
Daniel caught her before she hit the wall.
She pulled away from him.
Not angrily.
As though being touched by anyone suddenly hurt.
“My whole life…”
She pressed both hands to her temples.
“You told me my father left before I was born.””
“He did leave.””
“You told me he was some irresponsible man you met in college.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me?””
Vanessa looked toward the recorder.
“You let him near Simone.””
Evelyn's face changed.
“Things did not happen the way she claimed.””
Detective Collins stepped forward.
“Mrs. Bennett, I'd advise you not to continue unless you want legal counsel present.””
Evelyn gave her a cold look.
“I've spent my entire life being advised by people who don't understand survival.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“Survival?””
“Yes.””
Evelyn straightened.
“You think I had choices? I had two daughters, no money, no family willing to help me. Terrence paid the mortgage when your father—”
She stopped.
Daniel frowned.
Vanessa looked up.
“When my father what?””
Evelyn realized her mistake.
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You just said Terrence was my father.””
Evelyn's silence said too much.
Daniel looked at Collins.
The detective's expression sharpened.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Who was my father?””
Evelyn's mouth tightened.
The recorder suddenly crackled again.
Everyone turned.
The file had not ended.
Simone's voice returned, weaker now.
“If Mom tells you Terrence is your father, don't believe her.””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at the recorder.
Simone continued.
“She'll say anything if it keeps you from asking the real question.””
Static.
Then:
“Ask her why Terrence was paying her before you were born.””
Daniel felt the skin along his arms tighten.
Evelyn moved.
She lunged toward the recorder.
Detective Collins intercepted her.
“Don't.””
Evelyn stared at the device.
The recording continued.
“Vanessa, your father was a man named Marcus Reed.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Vanessa whispered, “Who?””
“Marcus Reed,” Simone repeated.
“He worked construction near our neighborhood. He and Mom were together for almost two years. He didn't leave you.””
The recording crackled.
“He disappeared.””
Vanessa leaned against the wall.
Daniel's heartbeat accelerated.
Simone continued.
“Mom told everybody he abandoned her. But I found letters. He kept writing. She hid them.””
Evelyn shouted, “Turn it off!””
No one moved.
The recorder continued.
“Then I found Terrence's money.””
Daniel stared at Evelyn.
Simone's voice weakened.
“Payments. Every month. Starting three weeks after Marcus disappeared.””
Vanessa began shaking.
“No.””
“I don't know what Terrence did to him,” Simone said.
“But Mom knows.””
Evelyn broke free of her composure.
“That girl knew nothing!””
Her voice echoed through the corridor.
Everyone went silent.
Vanessa looked at her mother.
“Where is Marcus?””
Evelyn breathed hard.
“I don't know.””
“Did Terrence kill him?””
“No.””
“Did you help him disappear?””
“No!””
“You were taking his money.””
“I had children to feed!””
Vanessa stared.
There it was again.
Money.
Always money.
Detective Collins said, “Mrs. Bennett, did Terrence Vale pay you to conceal information regarding Marcus Reed?””
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“You think everything fits into your forms and reports.””
“Did he?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
“I accepted help.””
Vanessa flinched.
“Help?””
“You had asthma. Simone needed braces. We were losing this house.””
“So you sold our lives to him?””
“I kept us alive.””
“You let him near Simone!””
“I did not know what he would become.””
“But when you knew?””
Evelyn went quiet.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“When you knew what he did to her, what did you do?””
Nothing.
“You told her to withdraw the complaint.””
Evelyn looked away.
“You sent her back to him.””
“I told her to think about Nia.””
“Nia wasn't born yet.””
Evelyn froze.
Daniel caught it.
Detective Collins caught it too.
Vanessa whispered, “You just lied.””
Evelyn's face changed.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Simone accused him when she was seventeen.””
“Yes.””
“Nia is nine.””
“Yes.””
“So why would you tell Simone to think about Nia before Nia existed?””
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel felt the truth approaching.
Something worse than what they already knew.
The recorder clicked.
Another file began automatically.
A man's voice.
Daniel didn't recognize it.
Evelyn did.
Her knees nearly buckled.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
Vanessa turned toward her.
The voice was older than the photograph in the box but unmistakably calm.
“If you're hearing this, then Simone found what Evelyn hid.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus Reed continued.
“I didn't abandon my daughter.””
Tears ran freely down Vanessa's face.
“I didn't even know Evelyn was pregnant until Simone contacted me years later.””
Daniel stared at the recorder.
The voice continued.
“Terrence threatened to kill me if I came back.””
Evelyn whispered, “Stop.””
“I believed him.””
Static filled the device.
“I was a coward.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“I told myself staying away would keep Vanessa safe.””
The recording paused.
“But I was wrong.””
Then Marcus said the sentence that made Detective Collins immediately pull out her phone.
“Terrence wasn't paying Evelyn to keep me away.””
A breath.
“He was paying her because she helped him bury someone.””
Evelyn dropped her cane.
The sound cracked against the wooden floor.
Daniel stared at her.
Detective Collins said quietly, “Who?””
The recorder answered.
“Simone's father.””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
Her mother stepped backward.
“No.””
Vanessa followed.
“Who was Simone's father?””
Evelyn's lips trembled.
“He was nobody.””
“You buried him?””
“No.””
“Did Terrence kill him?””
“No!””
“Then who did?””
Evelyn's face collapsed.
For the first time, Daniel saw not arrogance or manipulation.
Guilt.
Raw and ancient.
Evelyn whispered, “I did.””
Vanessa froze.
Daniel stared.
Detective Collins stepped forward.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn covered her face.
“It was an accident.””
Vanessa whispered, “You killed Simone's father?””
“He hit me.””
Evelyn's voice shook.
“He came home drunk. He always came home drunk.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“I pushed him.””
Nobody moved.
“He fell down the basement stairs.””
Vanessa's face drained.
“I called Terrence.””
“Why him?”” Collins asked.
“Because he loved me.””
Vanessa looked sick.
Evelyn continued.
“He helped me clean everything. He helped me keep this house. After that…”
Her eyes dropped.
“I owed him.””
Daniel understood.
The debt.
The money.
The silence.
Simone.
Nia.
Twenty years of secrets, all growing from one night nobody had been willing to tell the truth about.
Vanessa's voice became empty.
“You traded Simone for your secret.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
“You protected Terrence because he protected you.””
“I protected all of us.””
Vanessa stared at her mother.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You protected yourself.””
A phone rang.
Detective Collins answered.
She listened.
Her expression changed instantly.
“What hospital?””
Daniel stood.
“What happened?””
Collins ended the call.
“Nia woke up.””
Vanessa gripped Daniel's arm.
“Is she okay?””
May you like
Collins looked at them.
“She told the nurse she knows where Simone is.””
