Chapter 5: The Woman at the Door
By seven in the morning, Daniel knew two things with absolute certainty.
First, he would never again dismiss anything his daughter told him, no matter how impossible it sounded.
Second, Vanessa's mother had been near his child.
That fact burned hotter than every lie Vanessa had told him.
Detective Collins crouched in front of Ava.
“Sweetheart, can you tell me exactly what the lady looked like?””
Ava nodded.
“She had gray hair.””
“Long or short?””
“Short.””
“Did she walk normally?””
Ava thought.
“She had a cane.””
Vanessa turned away.
Daniel saw confirmation in her body.
Collins asked, “Did she tell you her name?””
“No.””
“Only that she was your grandmother?””
Ava nodded.
“Did she come inside?””
Ava shook her head.
“She was outside my window.””
Daniel's stomach twisted.
Ava's bedroom was on the first floor at the rear corner of the house.
Someone could reach it from the backyard.
“Did she knock?””
“No.””
“How did you notice her?””
Ava looked uncomfortable.
“She tapped the glass.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
He pictured his eight-year-old waking at night to a stranger tapping on her bedroom window while another child whispered beneath the floor.
He felt physically ill.
“What did you do?”” Collins asked.
“I pulled my blanket over my head.””
“Did she leave?””
“I don't know.””
Vanessa whispered, “Mom.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Call her.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Daniel.””
“Call her.””
“She won't answer.””
“Try.””
Vanessa hesitated.
Detective Collins nodded.
“Put it on speaker.””
Vanessa took out her phone.
Her hand shook as she searched for a contact Daniel had never seen.
Not “Mom.””
The contact was saved as EB.
She called.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Someone answered.
No greeting.
Vanessa whispered, “Mom?””
Silence.
Daniel stood close enough to hear faint breathing.
“Mom, were you at the house?””
The call disconnected.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Vanessa's knees weakened.
Collins immediately spoke into her radio.
“Send a unit to Evelyn Bennett's residence.””
Then the doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
Daniel instinctively moved Ava behind him.
Two officers reached for their weapons.
The bell rang again.
Vanessa's face was white.
Daniel whispered, “Who knows we're here?””
Collins motioned for everyone to stay back.
An officer approached the front door and looked through the side window.
His posture changed.
“Elderly Black female. Cane. Alone.””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Daniel stared at her.
“Is it her?””
The officer moved slightly so Vanessa could see.
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Detective Collins opened the door with officers positioned on both sides.
Evelyn Bennett stood on the porch.
She was elegant despite her age.
Gray hair cut close.
Dark coat.
Wooden cane.
A leather handbag hung from one arm.
Her eyes moved immediately past the police.
Straight to Vanessa.
“Baby.””
Vanessa recoiled as if struck.
Evelyn noticed Daniel.
Then Ava.
Her gaze lingered on her granddaughter.
Daniel stepped in front of the child.
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“You must be Daniel.””
His jaw tightened.
“Don't talk to my daughter.””
“I wasn't.””
“You were looking at her.””
“I've waited eight years to see her.””
“That was your choice.””
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
Vanessa whispered, “Why are you here?””
Her mother looked at her.
“Because you finally opened the floor.””
Nobody spoke.
Detective Collins stepped forward.
“Mrs. Bennett, how did you know the floor was opened?””
Evelyn looked at the detective.
“I know my house.””
“That doesn't answer the question.””
“No,” Evelyn said calmly.
“It doesn't.””
Daniel felt anger rising.
“Where is Simone?””
For the first time, Evelyn's composure cracked.
Just slightly.
Her eyes shifted.
Vanessa saw it.
“Mom.””
Evelyn tightened her grip on the cane.
“Not here.””
Vanessa walked toward her.
“Where is my sister?””
“Vanessa.””
“Where is Simone?””
Evelyn looked at Daniel as if asking him to control his wife.
He almost laughed.
“Answer her.””
Evelyn sighed.
“You've always been dramatic.””
Vanessa's face changed.
Daniel had seen that expression only once before, after Ava was born and Vanessa thought the baby had briefly stopped breathing.
Pure old fear.
“You told me Simone ran away.””
“She did.””
“You told me she abandoned Nia.””
“She left the child.””
“Then why was Terrence looking for both of them?””
Evelyn's mouth tightened.
Detective Collins said, “Mrs. Bennett, I would strongly advise you to be careful about what you say.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Am I under arrest?””
“No.””
“Then perhaps this is a family matter.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“A child was trapped beneath my daughter's bedroom.””
Evelyn looked almost amused.
“That wasn't where she was supposed to be.””
The entire room went silent.
Vanessa whispered, “How do you know where she was supposed to be?””
Evelyn realized too late.
Detective Collins stepped closer.
“Mrs. Bennett.””
Evelyn's eyes hardened.
Daniel saw the charming grandmother vanish.
Something colder replaced her.
“You people don't understand what you're dealing with.””
“Then explain it,” Collins said.
Evelyn stared at Vanessa.
“This is exactly what your sister did. Always believing strangers would save her.””
Vanessa's voice shook.
“What did you do to Simone?””
“I protected this family.””
“From what?””
“Scandal. Poverty. Men with enough money to destroy us.””
“You gave her back to Terrence.””
“I negotiated.””
Daniel's stomach turned.
Vanessa stared at her mother.
“You negotiated my sister?””
Evelyn snapped, “I kept a roof over your heads!””
Ava began crying.
Daniel immediately crouched beside her.
Evelyn saw the child and lowered her voice.
“This is not a conversation for her.””
Daniel looked up.
“You don't get to decide that.””
Vanessa stepped closer to her mother.
“Is Simone alive?””
Evelyn didn't answer.
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Mom.””
Nothing.
“Is my sister alive?””
Evelyn looked toward the stairs.
Then toward the hallway leading to Ava's room.
Her eyes stopped there.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel stood.
“What are you looking at?””
Vanessa's face changed.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“The corridor.””
Police had searched it.
Or they thought they had.
Vanessa suddenly ran upstairs.
“Vanessa!”” Collins shouted.
Daniel followed.
They reached the laundry room.
Vanessa shoved the shelving unit aside and entered the concealed corridor.
Daniel followed behind her.
“Nia's room” was empty now except for evidence markers.
Vanessa dropped to her knees beside the thin mattress.
She lifted it.
Wood underneath.
She ran her fingers along the wall.
“What are you doing?””
“My sister and I used to hide things.””
“Where?””
Vanessa knocked against one panel.
Solid.
Another.
Solid.
Third.
Hollow.
Her breath caught.
Daniel stared.
Vanessa pulled at the panel.
It didn't move.
Daniel joined her.
Together they yanked.
The panel broke loose.
Behind it was a narrow recessed compartment.
Not large enough for a person.
But large enough for a box.
Inside sat an old red metal cash box.
Vanessa stared at it.
“No.””
Daniel lifted it out.
The lock had already been broken.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
A flash drive.
And a small digital recorder.
Vanessa picked up one photograph.
Her legs collapsed beneath her.
Daniel caught her.
The photograph showed Vanessa, perhaps sixteen, standing beside an older girl who resembled her strongly.
Simone.
Behind them stood Evelyn.
And beside Evelyn—
A younger Terrence Vale.
Daniel looked closer.
The date printed in the corner was nearly twenty years old.
Long before Nia was born.
Vanessa whispered, “She knew him before Simone did.””
Daniel's stomach dropped.
Detective Collins appeared behind them.
“What did you find?””
Daniel handed her the photograph.
Then Vanessa saw an envelope beneath the remaining papers.
Her name was written across the front.
VANESSA.
The handwriting was Simone's.
Vanessa tore it open.
Inside was a single page.
She read the first sentence.
Then stopped.
“What?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa couldn't speak.
He took the page.
The letter began:
Vanessa, if you're reading this, Mom has finally brought you back to the house.
Daniel looked at his wife.
Vanessa shook her head in disbelief.
He continued reading.
Do not believe anything she tells you about why I disappeared.
Nia isn't the secret she's protecting.
You are.
Daniel felt his pulse in his throat.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa took the letter from him and read the final lines.
Her hands began shaking violently.
Then she looked up at Daniel.
“My father…”
She swallowed.
“My mother lied about him too.””
Daniel stared.
Vanessa turned toward the doorway.
Evelyn had somehow made it halfway up the stairs before an officer stopped her.
She stood at the end of the hall.
Watching.
Vanessa held up the letter.
“Who is my father?””
Evelyn's face became expressionless.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the digital recorder inside the box suddenly beeped.
A tiny red light flashed.
Daniel picked it up.
There was one saved file.
Detective Collins nodded.
“Play it.””
Daniel pressed the button.
Static filled the corridor.
Then a woman's frightened voice came through the speaker.
Simone.
“Vanessa, if you ever hear this, I need you to take Nia and run.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The recording crackled.
Then Simone whispered the sentence that made Evelyn close her eyes.
“Because Terrence isn't just Nia's father.””
May you like
A long pause.
“He's your father too.””
