Chapter 1: The Whisper That Knew Her Name
The first time Ava heard the voice beneath her bedroom floor, she convinced herself it was a dream.
The second time, she slept with her lamp on.
By the fifth night, the eight-year-old had stopped sleeping altogether.
“Ava…”
The whisper came again.
Soft.
Breathless.
Close enough to make every hair on her arms rise.
Ava lay frozen beneath her purple comforter, staring at the strip of wooden floor beside her bed.
Her room looked normal.
Moonlight slipped through the curtains. Her stuffed rabbit sat against the pillows. The digital clock on her nightstand glowed 2:17 a.m.
Nothing moved.
Then the voice came again.
“Ava…”
She pulled the blanket to her chin.
“Mommy?””
No answer.
“Daddy?””
Silence.
Ava's eyes filled with tears.
She knew her father's voice.
She knew her mother's.
This wasn't either of them.
The whisper sounded young.
Maybe another child.
And it was coming from underneath her.
Ava forced herself out of bed.
Her bare feet touched the cold hardwood.
She stood completely still.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then—
“Please…”
Ava gasped.
She dropped to her knees.
Beside her bed lay a cream-colored rug Vanessa had bought when they moved into the house six months earlier. Ava grabbed its edge and slowly pulled it backward.
Something was wrong with the floor underneath.
A long dark line ran between two boards.
Ava frowned.
She had never noticed it before.
She pressed one trembling fingertip against the crack.
Cold air touched her skin.
Not cool.
Cold.
Like air from a basement in winter.
Ava jerked her hand away.
“Daddy!””
Her scream echoed through the hallway.
Heavy footsteps came immediately.
Daniel Carter appeared in the doorway wearing a navy T-shirt and gray sweatpants, his face tight with panic.
“Ava?””
He crossed the room quickly.
“What happened?””
She pointed at the floor.
Daniel looked down, then back at his daughter.
“Baby, what is it?””
Ava was crying too hard to answer.
Daniel knelt beside her.
“Look at me.””
She did.
“You're safe. Tell me.””
Ava swallowed.
“Somebody keeps calling me.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Calling you?””
“From under the floor.””
He stared at her.
Ava grabbed his wrist.
“Every night.””
Daniel's eyebrows drew together.
“What do they say?””
“My name.””
He looked toward the boards.
“And tonight?””
Ava whispered, “They said please.””
Daniel didn't laugh.
He didn't tell her there were monsters only in stories.
That was one of the things Ava loved most about him. When something frightened her, he listened first.
Daniel placed one hand on her shoulder and lowered the other to the floor.
He pressed his palm against the wood.
Nothing.
He leaned closer.
Ava held her breath.
Three seconds.
Five.
Ten.
Then Daniel went completely still.
His hand slowly lifted.
“Daddy?””
Daniel raised one finger to his lips.
Ava's heart pounded.
Daniel lowered his ear almost against the crack.
A sound came through the boards.
So faint he almost missed it.
“Help…”
Daniel recoiled.
Ava burst into tears.
“You heard it!””
Daniel turned toward her.
Before he could answer, light appeared in the doorway.
Vanessa stood there.
A cream silk robe hung loosely around her body. Her hair was wrapped for the night. She carried a metal tray holding a glass of water and medicine.
“What is going on?””
Daniel looked back at the floor.
“There’s something underneath these boards.””
The tray shifted slightly in Vanessa's hands.
“What?””
“Ava says she's been hearing someone down there.””
Vanessa stared at her daughter.
For half a second, her face showed something Daniel didn't expect.
Not confusion.
Not disbelief.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“She had another nightmare.””
“I wasn't asleep!”” Ava cried.
Vanessa stepped into the room.
“Ava, baby, you've been having trouble sleeping since we moved here.””
“No!””
Daniel raised his hand.
“Vanessa.””
His voice had changed.
“I heard it too.””
The room became silent.
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the tray.
Daniel watched her.
“You heard what?”” she asked.
“A voice.””
Her eyes flicked toward the floor.
Then back to him.
“Daniel, old houses make sounds.””
“This house was renovated three years ago.””
“Pipes. Animals. Air moving through the crawlspace.””
Daniel looked down.
“There isn't supposed to be a crawlspace under this room.””
Vanessa said nothing.
That was when Daniel noticed the warped board.
Its edge rose slightly higher than the others.
He ran his fingers over it.
The nails were old.
Too old.
They didn't match the newer flooring.
Daniel frowned.
“This board isn't original to the renovation.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, leave it alone.””
He glanced at her.
“Why?””
“Because it's two-thirty in the morning.””
“There's someone under my daughter's floor.””
“There is not someone under the floor.””
“You don't know that.””
“Yes, I do.””
Daniel stared at her.
Vanessa's face changed.
She realized what she had said.
Daniel slowly rose halfway from his crouch.
“How do you know?””
“I mean—”
“You said you know.””
“I mean there can't be anybody under there.””
Daniel's eyes remained on her.
Vanessa lowered the tray onto the dresser.
“Please.””
Something in her voice made Ava stop crying for a moment.
It wasn't irritation.
It was terror.
Daniel looked from his wife to the warped board.
Then he hooked his fingers beneath the raised edge.
Vanessa lunged forward.
“Daniel!””
He pulled.
Nothing happened.
Daniel repositioned himself, braced one knee against the floor, and pulled harder.
The wood groaned.
“Stop!””
Vanessa grabbed his shoulder.
Daniel shook her off.
“Why are you acting like this?””
“Because you're destroying the floor!””
Another hard pull.
Crack.
A nail popped free.
Ava backed against the bed.
Daniel rocked the board sideways.
Rotten wood splintered along one edge.
Vanessa's breathing became ragged.
“Daniel, I'm telling you—”
He pulled again.
The long board tore free.
Darkness opened beneath them.
Ava screamed.
Daniel dropped the board beside him.
A black rectangular space sat beneath the floor, deeper than he expected.
A strange odor rose from it.
Dust.
Damp wood.
Something metallic.
Daniel placed both hands beside the opening and leaned forward.
“Hello?””
Nothing.
“Ava said somebody's down there.””
Vanessa stood behind him.
She looked as if she might faint.
Daniel lowered his head closer.
“Can you hear me?””
Movement came from the darkness.
A scraping sound.
Then breathing.
Daniel's blood ran cold.
A small hand slowly emerged from below.
It was covered in dust.
Thin fingers stretched toward him.
Ava sobbed.
Daniel couldn't move.
From the darkness, a weak voice whispered:
“Please… help me.””
Daniel reached downward.
His fingertips were only inches away.
Behind him, Vanessa made a sound he had never heard from her before.
“No.””
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Recognizing.
Daniel turned his head slightly.
Vanessa was staring at the hand.
And there were tears running down her face.
Before Daniel could ask why, the voice below whispered again.
This time, it didn't say help.
It said one word.
“Vanessa.””
Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.
May you like
And Vanessa's face told him everything he needed to know.
She knew that voice.
