Chapter 2: The Girl in the Darkness
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“What did she just call you?””
Vanessa's lips moved, but nothing came out.
Beneath the floor, the small hand trembled.
Daniel forgot every question.
He reached down.
“I've got you.””
His fingers closed around the child's wrist.
She was frighteningly light.
Daniel lowered himself onto his stomach and extended his arm deeper.
“Can you reach my hand?””
A faint sob came from below.
Daniel felt fingers lock around his.
“That's it. Hold on.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No, Daniel.””
He looked over his shoulder.
“What?””
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain it while I get this child out.””
“Don't.””
Daniel froze.
The single word hit him harder than shouting would have.
“Don't?””
Ava stared at her mother.
“Mommy?””
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
That finally seemed to break something inside her.
She covered her mouth.
Daniel's face hardened.
“Move.””
He widened the opening by yanking another loose board free.
The space underneath was narrow, but not as shallow as it should have been.
Someone had altered it.
Daniel could see beams, insulation, and a crude hollow cut between joists.
And inside—
A child.
A girl.
Maybe nine.
Maybe ten.
She wore an oversized sweatshirt stained with dust. Her braided hair was tangled. Her cheeks were hollow.
Daniel's stomach twisted.
“Oh my God.””
Ava peeked from behind him and screamed.
Daniel turned sharply.
“Ava, get on the bed.””
“But—”
“Now.””
She obeyed.
Daniel reached both arms down.
“I'm going to lift you.””
The child whimpered.
“Hurts.””
“Where?””
“My leg.””
Daniel saw a swollen ankle wedged against part of the framing.
“Okay. Don't move.””
He carefully shifted the broken wood around her.
Vanessa suddenly said, “We need to call somebody.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I'm calling 911 the second she's out.””
Vanessa's face drained.
“No.””
Daniel stopped.
A terrifying thought entered his mind.
“Why don't you want me to call the police?””
“I didn't say that.””
“You just did.””
“No, I said—”
“Vanessa.””
Daniel's voice was low.
Their eleven-year marriage had survived bills, miscarriages, job losses, his mother's death, and the stressful move into this house.
He had never looked at his wife the way he looked at her now.
Like a stranger.
The girl below began coughing.
Daniel turned away.
Questions could wait.
He freed her ankle.
Then he lifted.
She cried out.
“Easy.””
Daniel pulled her through the opening and onto the floor.
The child curled into herself.
Ava slid off the bed despite Daniel's instructions.
She approached slowly.
“Daddy…”
Daniel gently moved hair from the girl's face.
Her skin felt cold.
There were scratches along her arms.
No obvious severe bleeding.
But she was dehydrated.
Terrified.
And impossibly, horrifyingly real.
“What’s your name?”” Daniel asked.
The girl's eyes opened.
Dark brown.
Large.
She looked at Ava.
Then Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
When she saw Vanessa, her entire body tightened.
She tried to crawl backward.
“No!””
Daniel caught her carefully.
“It's okay.””
The girl shook her head violently.
“No, no, no.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I'm sorry.””
Daniel looked up.
The girl stared at Vanessa.
“You said you'd come back.””
Daniel's heart stopped.
Vanessa sank against the dresser.
Ava whispered, “Mommy?””
Daniel stood.
“What did she mean?””
Vanessa wiped tears from her face.
“Daniel—”
“What did she mean?””
“Please don't do this in front of Ava.””
Daniel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“There is a child who was trapped under Ava's bedroom floor, and she knows your name.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She's my niece.””
Silence.
Daniel stared.
“Your what?””
“My niece.””
“You don't have a niece.””
Vanessa's eyes opened.
“Yes, I do.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Your sister doesn't have children.””
“Not Keisha.””
Daniel felt the room tilt beneath him.
Vanessa had one sister.
At least, that was what he'd always believed.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered, “My older sister.””
Ava looked between her parents.
“You have another sister?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You told me you grew up with Keisha.””
“I lied.””
The admission landed softly.
The consequences did not.
The child on the floor coughed again.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
Vanessa saw it.
“Please.””
He turned on her.
“If you ask me one more time not to call for help, we're going to have a very different problem.””
“I wasn't going to stop you.””
Daniel dialed 911.
He gave the address.
He explained that a child had been found trapped beneath a bedroom floor.
Even saying the words sounded insane.
The dispatcher told him paramedics and police were coming.
The little girl heard the word police and became frantic.
“No!””
Daniel knelt.
“They're going to help you.””
“No police.””
“Why?””
“She said they would take me away.””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa turned her face aside.
“Who said that?”” Daniel asked.
The child pointed.
At Vanessa.
Ava began crying again.
Daniel stood so quickly he nearly dropped his phone.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not what you think.””
“Then tell me what to think!””
“She wasn't supposed to be there!””
Daniel stared.
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“She was never supposed to be in that space.””
The girl whispered from the floor.
“But you put me there.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
Vanessa looked horrified.
“No.””
“You did.””
“No, Nia.””
That name.
Nia.
Vanessa crossed the room.
The child shrank away.
Daniel immediately stepped between them.
“Don't come closer.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Daniel.””
“I said don't.””
For the first time in their marriage, Vanessa looked frightened of her husband.
Sirens became audible in the distance.
Nia's breathing accelerated.
“No, no, no.””
Daniel crouched beside her.
“Nia, listen to me.””
She looked at him.
“Nobody is putting you back down there.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You promise?””
“I promise.””
Ava came closer.
Daniel didn't stop her this time.
Ava took the corner of her blanket and placed it around Nia's shoulders.
Nia stared at her.
“You heard me?””
Ava nodded.
“Every night.””
Nia whispered, “I wasn't calling you at first.””
Ava frowned.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Who were you calling?””
Nia looked at Vanessa.
“Aunt Vanessa.””
Daniel slowly turned.
Vanessa was crying silently.
Nia continued.
“She stopped answering.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“How long were you under there?””
Nia looked confused.
“I don't know.””
“Days?””
She hesitated.
Then shook her head.
“Weeks.””
Vanessa whispered, “That's impossible.””
Nia looked directly at her.
“You brought food.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
Vanessa went pale.
The sirens grew louder.
Red light flashed briefly through the curtains.
Daniel's mind raced.
Weeks.
Food.
Secret sister.
A hidden child.
A concealed space beneath the floor.
This wasn't a mistake.
This wasn't something Vanessa could explain with one panicked sentence.
Someone had built this.
Someone had known.
And the woman Daniel had slept beside every night knew far more than she had admitted.
A knock thundered downstairs.
“Police!””
Daniel started toward the door.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
He looked down at her hand.
She released him immediately.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “before you open that door, you need to know something.””
He stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
Then at Ava.
May you like
Her voice nearly disappeared.
“If the police find out who Nia's mother is, this family is over.””
