Chapter 7: The Truth Inside the Envelope
Nobody touched the envelope.
Not me.
Not Elena.
Not even Victor.
It sat on the table between us like a question nobody wanted to answer.
Sheriff Ramsey stared at it.
He looked completely lost.
For the first time in his career, he was surrounded by people who knew more than he did.
And he hated that feeling.
“What is happening?”” he finally demanded.
Nobody responded.
His voice became louder.
“I said, what is happening?””
Elena looked at him.
“Sheriff, this no longer concerns you.””
That sentence broke something inside him.
Because for years, everyone had told him everything.
Every complaint.
Every rumor.
Every problem.
He had always been the person standing in the middle.
Now he was standing outside the circle.
And he realized how powerless that felt.
Victor looked at me.
“You should open it.””
I stared at the envelope.
“You came here for this?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Victor’s expression changed.
“Because you deserve to know before everyone else does.””
I looked at Elena.
She looked away.
That was enough.
The woman who always had answers suddenly had none.
I picked up the envelope.
The symbol on the front was old.
A mark used by a division that officially did not exist anymore.
A division created for situations where ordinary rules failed.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
My hand stopped moving.
Because I knew the person in the picture.
A younger version of myself.
Standing beside someone I thought I had lost forever.
Elena stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I did not answer.
The room became silent.
Victor watched my reaction carefully.
“You remember.””
“Yes.””
“Then you remember why you disappeared.””
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
Years ago, I believed walking away would end the danger.
I believed removing myself would protect everyone.
I was wrong.
The danger did not disappear.
It waited.
“What does this have to do with Elena?”” I asked.
Victor looked at her.
“Ask her.””
I turned.
“Elena.””
She closed her eyes briefly.
A sign.
A confirmation.
“You knew.””
Her silence was the answer.
Ramsey looked between us.
“Someone want to explain what is going on?””
Nobody listened.
I stepped closer to Elena.
“How long?””
She took a breath.
“Six years.””
The words landed heavily.
“Six years?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“By hiding the truth?””
“By keeping you alive.””
The room went still.
Victor looked away.
Even he understood that sentence carried weight.
Elena continued.
“The people who came after you never stopped searching.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“The Black Meridian.””
The name meant nothing to Ramsey.
But it meant everything to me.
A network built from people who believed they were untouchable.
People who operated through influence, money, and secrets.
People who never needed weapons because they controlled the people holding them.
Victor leaned against the wall.
“They have been rebuilding.””
I looked at him.
“And you?””
His expression darkened.
“I have been watching.””
“Watching?””
“Yes.””
“That is what you call it?””
Victor accepted the accusation.
“Maybe not.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I made mistakes.””
A silence followed.
Because that was something Victor never admitted.
He always believed he was right.
Always.
Then the station lights flickered again.
Everyone looked up.
Elena immediately became alert.
“That’s impossible.””
“What?””
“The power system is isolated.””
A deputy rushed in.
“Director.””
His face was pale.
“The cameras are back online.””
Elena looked confused.
“They were disabled.””
The deputy swallowed.
“They are showing something.””
Everyone moved toward the security monitor.
The screen turned on.
A live feed appeared.
Not from outside.
Not from the parking lot.
From inside the station.
Everyone froze.
Because the camera showed the evidence room.
The room where my phone had been stolen.
And standing inside that room was someone wearing a Black Meridian symbol.
Ramsey stepped back.
“How did they get inside?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
The station was compromised.
Victor looked at me.
“They wanted you to see this.””
I watched the screen.
The person on camera slowly turned.
Then looked directly into the lens.
Like they knew we were watching.
A distorted voice came through the speakers.
“You spent years hiding behind a quiet life.””
The room became colder.
“You thought changing your name would erase what happened.””
The figure stepped closer to the camera.
“But you forgot one thing.””
A pause.
“We remember.””
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, the number was visible.
Everyone looked at it.
Even Elena.
Because it was not a secret code.
Not an unknown signal.
It was a normal phone number.
A number from my past.
A number I had not seen in years.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
May you like
And the first sentence made my blood run cold.
“You left me behind.””
