Chapter 5: The Enemy Behind the Badge
The message changed everything.
For the first time since entering Blackwood County, nobody was focused on Sheriff Ramsey.
Not Elena.
Not her team.
Not even me.
Because a corrupt sheriff was predictable.
A larger threat was not.
The room became unusually quiet.
The assistant who delivered the message stood frozen near the doorway.
Elena looked at him.
“Read it again.””
He swallowed.
“The security alert confirms that the device was accessed by an unauthorized person. The signal was traced. The system detected possible exposure of the carrier’s location.””
“And the source?””
The assistant looked down.
“That is the problem.””
Elena’s expression tightened.
“We don’t know?””
“No.””
That answer bothered everyone.
I walked toward the window.
Outside, Blackwood County looked exactly the same.
People walking into stores.
Cars passing through intersections.
The morning sun reflecting off empty streets.
A normal town.
But normal was often an illusion.
“Who could track the device?”” Elena asked.
I stayed quiet for a moment.
“Someone who understands the technology.””
“And has access to similar systems?””
“Yes.””
The room became heavier.
Elena crossed her arms.
“That narrows the list.””
“Not enough.””
She looked at me.
“You think this was intentional?””
I nodded.
“Someone wanted to know where I was.””
“Why?””
I looked back at her.
“Because they knew I would eventually be found.””
Nobody spoke.
The timing was too perfect.
A random traffic stop.
A local arrest.
A stolen device.
A security alert.
Someone had been waiting for a mistake.
And Sheriff Ramsey had unknowingly handed them the opportunity.
Across town, Ramsey was discovering something else.
His badge did not protect him anymore.
He stood inside his office while County Attorney Daniel Brooks placed documents on his desk.
“I need your statement.””
Ramsey stared at him.
“My statement?””
“Yes.””
“About what?””
Daniel gave him a look.
“About why a woman with federal authorization was detained without proper verification.””
Ramsey rubbed his forehead.
“This is getting blown out of proportion.””
Daniel remained silent.
That silence irritated him.
“Are you listening to me?””
“Yes.””
“Then you understand this was just a misunderstanding.””
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“No, Sheriff.””
Ramsey stopped.
“What?””
“A misunderstanding happens when someone makes a mistake while trying to do the right thing.””
Daniel pointed at the documents.
“These reports show you ignored warnings.””
Ramsey looked away.
The phone.
The warning.
The calm voice telling him not to interfere.
He remembered every second.
“I didn’t know who she was.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“That is exactly why this is serious.””
Ramsey slammed his hand on the desk.
“I was protecting my county.””
Daniel looked at him.
“From what?””
Ramsey had no answer.
Because the truth sounded embarrassing.
He had not protected anyone.
He had protected his pride.
Back at the station, Elena gathered her team.
“We leave in thirty minutes.””
One agent looked surprised.
“Leaving?””
Elena nodded.
“Moving her to a secure location.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
Elena frowned.
“Excuse me?””
“If we leave now, whoever triggered the alert knows we are moving.””
“That may already be true.””
“Exactly.””
The room became silent.
I continued.
“Someone wanted me found. They wanted a reaction.””
Elena studied me.
“You think this is a trap.””
“I think they are waiting for us to behave exactly how they expect.””
One of the agents stepped forward.
“Then what do you suggest?””
I looked toward the hallway.
“Stay.””
Everyone looked confused.
“Here?””
“Yes.””
Elena lowered her voice.
“This station is compromised.””
“Probably.””
“Then why stay?””
I looked toward Sheriff Ramsey’s office.
“Because whoever planned this expected me to disappear.””
A pause.
“They don’t know what happens when someone stops running.””
Elena watched me carefully.
For years, she had worked with people who reacted quickly.
People who followed protocols.
People who relied on plans.
But I had always believed something different.
The most dangerous person in a room was not always the loudest.
Sometimes it was the quiet one who waited.
Then the lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
The station suddenly went dark.
A second later, emergency lights activated.
Red.
Dim.
Unsettling.
The assistant checked his equipment.
“We lost external communications.””
Elena immediately moved.
“Lock down the building.””
The agents spread out.
Ramsey rushed from his office.
“What is happening?””
Nobody answered.
That scared him.
He was used to being the person with information.
Now he was the last person to know anything.
Then a sound came from the evidence room.
A single alarm.
Everyone froze.
Elena looked at me.
“The phone.””
We moved quickly.
The evidence room door was open.
The bag that contained my device was lying on the floor.
Empty.
Ramsey stared.
“No…”
Elena looked at him.
“What happened?””
“I don’t know.””
But everyone knew.
Someone had entered the station.
Someone had taken the device.
And someone had done it while every law enforcement officer in the building was watching.
Then my phone rang.
Not from the evidence room.
From somewhere outside.
Everyone turned toward the sound.
The device was no longer inside.
But someone was using it.
The call connected automatically.
A voice filled the room.
“Agent.””
Nobody moved.
The voice was distorted.
Calm.
Confident.
“I wondered how long it would take before you realized this was never about the sheriff.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Identify yourself.””
The voice ignored her.
Instead, it spoke directly to me.
“You always believed staying invisible kept people safe.””
A pause.
“But you were wrong.””
I stared at the phone.
“Who are you?””
A quiet laugh answered.
“Someone who remembers what happened the last time you disappeared.””
My expression changed.
Because that sentence meant one thing.
They knew me.
Not my rank.
Not my assignment.
Me.
Then the voice said something that made Elena turn toward me.
“You should tell them the truth.””
Silence.
“What truth?”” Elena asked.
The voice continued.
“The reason you gave up your identity.””
My heart stopped for half a second.
Because there was only one secret it could mean.
A secret even Elena did not know.
The call ended.
May you like
And for the first time in years…
I wondered if hiding my past had been the biggest mistake I ever made.
