Chapter 6: The Secret I Buried

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

Not because they were afraid.

Because they were waiting.

Waiting for me to explain.

Elena looked at me carefully.

“You know who that was.””

It was not a question.

I looked at the silent phone on the table.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

I did not answer immediately.

Because some secrets are not forgotten.

They are buried.

And buried things have a way of returning when someone digs deep enough.

“I knew this day would come.””

Elena stepped closer.

“What day?””

“The day someone would stop caring about my position and start looking for my past.””

The agents exchanged confused looks.

Ramsey stood near the doorway.

For once, he was not trying to interrupt.

He was listening.

I looked at him.

“You wanted to know who you arrested.””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“Then you should know this was never about a rank.””

I paused.

“It was about a promise.””

Years earlier, before Blackwood County, before the quiet life, before the simple clothes and anonymous identity, I had been someone else.

Someone people knew.

Someone enemies searched for.

But I left because of one mission.

One person.

One decision that changed everything.

Elena lowered her voice.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because the fewer people who knew, the safer they were.””

She looked frustrated.

“You don’t get to decide that alone.””

“I had to.””

“Why?””

I looked at her.

“Because everyone close to me became a target.””

The room went quiet.

Even Ramsey stopped pretending he was not interested.

Then Elena received another message.

She read it.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The person who contacted us has been identified.””

Everyone waited.

“Who?””

Elena hesitated.

Then:

“Victor Hale.””

The name hit differently.

The agents looked at each other.

Ramsey noticed.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered him.

I did.

“Someone who should have disappeared years ago.””

Elena looked at me.

“You know him.””

“Yes.””

“Enemy?””

I stared at the floor.

“Not exactly.””

That confused everyone.

Because enemies were easier.

Enemies were simple.

Victor Hale was something worse.

He was someone I once trusted.

Someone who knew my habits.

My weaknesses.

My history.

And the one person who knew why I walked away.

A loud noise came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A vehicle stopped in front of the station.

No sirens.

No announcement.

Just one black SUV.

Ramsey moved toward the window.

“Another team?””

I watched the vehicle.

“No.””

Elena looked at me.

“How do you know?””

“Because they want us to see them.””

The doors opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Calm.

Wearing a simple dark coat.

No weapon.

No bodyguards.

Just confidence.

He walked toward the entrance.

The agents prepared themselves.

But I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

Elena looked shocked.

“You know him.””

“Yes.””

The man entered the station.

The entire room became silent.

Victor Hale looked around.

His eyes stopped on me.

Then he smiled.

Not like Sheriff Ramsey.

Not with arrogance.

With familiarity.

Like he was seeing an old friend.

“After all these years,” Victor said softly.

“You finally stopped hiding.””

Nobody moved.

Elena watched me.

Ramsey watched me.

Everyone waited for my response.

Victor took another step.

“I knew the moment you picked up that phone.””

A pause.

“You would come back.””

I stared at him.

“Why are you here?””

His smile faded.

“Because the people who forced you into hiding are moving again.””

Elena stepped forward.

“What people?””

Victor looked at her.

Then back at me.

And the next words changed everything.

“Ask her.””

He pointed directly at Elena.

The room froze.

Elena’s face changed.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“The person you trusted most has been keeping the biggest secret.””

I looked at Elena.

For the first time that day…

I was not sure who to believe.

Then Victor placed a small envelope on the table.

No name.

No label.

Just one symbol.

A symbol I had not seen in years.

My expression changed.

Because I knew exactly what it meant.

Victor whispered:

“The past you buried…”

May you like

He stepped back.

“Just came home.””
