Chapter 2: The Call Nobody Expected

The jail cell door closed behind me with a heavy metallic sound.

Sheriff Ramsey stood outside the bars, watching.

Waiting.

He wanted me to react.

He wanted anger.

Fear.

Begging.

Anything that proved he had control.

Instead, I sat on the bench and folded my hands.

His expression tightened.

“You’re taking this pretty well.””

I looked up.

“I have been in worse rooms.””

He laughed.

“Sure you have.””

The sarcasm was obvious.

“You know, people like you always think they’re special.””

I said nothing.

He stepped closer.

“Eventually everyone realizes they’re just another person.””

I looked at him.

“That is true.””

His smile returned.

“Finally, something we agree on.””

“I’m just surprised you haven’t realized it yet.””

The deputy behind him looked down quickly, trying not to react.

Sheriff Ramsey’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

He hated being challenged.

Especially by someone who was not afraid.

“You’ll get your phone call soon,” he said.

“Maybe you can call someone who can explain your attitude problem.””

Then he walked away.

For the next hour, I waited.

The jail was small.

Too small.

A place where everyone knew everyone.

A place where rumors traveled faster than facts.

I could hear voices outside the office.

“He arrested that woman from the diner?””

“Yeah.””

“For what?””

“Attitude, apparently.””

A quiet laugh followed.

Even the deputies knew how ridiculous it sounded.

But nobody wanted to say it directly.

Not against Sheriff Ramsey.

That was how men like him stayed powerful.

People stayed silent.

Finally, the booking officer opened my cell.

“Your phone call.””

I stood.

“Thank you.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Listen… I don’t know what happened out there.””

I paused.

Neither did he.

Nobody did.

Because Sheriff Ramsey had made sure nobody asked questions.

I walked to the phone booth.

The deputy watched me.

Most people called family.

A spouse.

A lawyer.

Someone who could come rescue them.

I did not.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Then I dialed a number from memory.

Not a personal number.

Not a normal number.

A number I had memorized years ago because forgetting it could cost lives.

The deputy leaned against the wall.

Then slowly straightened.

Because after the first few digits, my tone changed.

Not louder.

Not more emotional.

Just different.

Professional.

Precise.

“This is priority authorization request,” I said.

The deputy stopped moving.

I continued.

“I am confirming identity through emergency channel.””

A long pause.

Then I spoke a sequence of words and numbers that meant nothing to anyone in that small jail.

But somewhere far away…

someone recognized them.

The line went silent.

Then a voice answered.

“Authorization confirmed.””

The deputy stared.

I continued calmly.

“My location is Blackwood County Detention Center.””

Another pause.

Then the voice on the other end changed.

“Are you being detained?””

I looked through the glass window toward Sheriff Ramsey’s office.

He was laughing with two deputies.

Completely unaware.

“Yes,” I replied.

The voice became colder.

“Under what authority?””

I looked at the evidence bag sitting on the sheriff’s desk.

My phone.

The device he had mocked.

The device he had touched.

The device he had been warned not to interfere with.

“Local authority,” I said.

A silence followed.

Then one sentence came through the receiver.

A sentence that would soon destroy Sheriff Ramsey’s confidence.

“Stand by. Immediate response is being initiated.””

I slowly hung up.

When I returned to the cell, Sheriff Ramsey was waiting.

He smiled.

“Feel better?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His smile widened.

“Still stubborn?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Then what changed?””

I stared at the man who thought he had won.

“Nothing.””

A pause.

“Everything else did.””

For the first time, Sheriff Ramsey looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

Then he laughed and walked away.

But five minutes later, every radio in the station began to crackle.

The sound of urgent voices filled the building.

Deputies stopped talking.

Phones started ringing.

Vehicles outside slowed near the station.

And Sheriff Ramsey’s smile disappeared when the dispatcher’s voice came through:

“Sheriff Ramsey… you need to report to the front entrance immediately.””

He picked up the radio.

“Who is it?””

There was a long silence.

Then the dispatcher answered.

“Sir… I think you need to see this yourself.””

May you like

And for the first time that night…

Sheriff Cole Ramsey looked afraid.
