Chapter 9: The Truth Rachel Tried to Protect
The name echoed through the room.
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.
My mind refused to accept it.
“Say that again.””
Anthony’s breathing was heavy on the phone.
“Marcus…”
“Say the name again.””
Nobody moved.
Not Officer Collins.
Not Officer Ramirez.
Not Daniel.
Not even Patricia.
Because everyone was waiting.
Anthony finally spoke.
“It was Rachel’s sister.””
My heart stopped.
“My sister-in-law?””
Anthony swallowed.
“Yes.””
I looked at the floor.
Rachel’s sister, Claire.
The woman who had cried at Rachel’s funeral.
The woman who held Ava’s hand and promised she would always be there.
The woman who told me, “Rachel would want me to help you raise her.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Anthony was quiet.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Then tell me what you know.””
He sighed.
“After Rachel got sick, Claire started asking questions.””
“What questions?””
“About money. About custody. About what would happen to Ava.””
My hands tightened.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Anthony’s voice lowered.
“She believed Rachel had made a mistake.””
The same words.
Again.
Everyone had their own version of Rachel’s life.
Everyone except Rachel.
“What mistake?””
Anthony answered:
“Choosing you.””
The room became silent.
I closed my eyes.
Because suddenly every strange moment from the past came rushing back.
Claire’s comments.
The way she would sometimes say things like:
“Raising a child alone is complicated.””
Or:
“You’re doing your best, Marcus, but Ava deserves stability.””
I had ignored them.
I thought she was grieving.
I thought she was trying to help.
But maybe she had been planting doubt.
Anthony continued.
“Rachel noticed.””
“How?””
“She told me.””
My eyes opened.
“You talked to Rachel about this?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Anthony didn’t respond.
That silence hurt.
More than any explanation.
“I was trying to respect her privacy.””
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“You were protecting everyone except me.””
Nobody said anything.
Because it was true.
Anthony exhaled.
“Rachel told me Claire had been asking about legal options.””
My stomach tightened.
“Legal options?””
“She wanted to know what would happen if you weren’t considered Ava’s biological father.””
The words were painful.
Even hearing them years later.
Officer Collins immediately looked at me.
“Mr. Williams, did you ever take a DNA test?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because nobody questioned it.””
I looked at Ava.
“Because she’s my daughter.””
The officer nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
Anthony spoke again.
“There’s something else.””
I already knew I wouldn’t like it.
“What?””
“Rachel didn’t just write one letter.””
My eyes moved toward the wooden box.
“She wrote three.””
Everyone froze.
“Three?””
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“Where are the others?””
Anthony hesitated.
“Claire had one.””
My chest tightened.
“And Patricia had one.””
Everyone turned toward Patricia.
She looked down.
“So you all knew.””
Nobody answered.
“You all knew my wife was trying to protect us.””
I looked around the room.
“And you all decided I didn’t deserve to know.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.””
But sorry wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
Officer Collins spoke firmly.
“We need to locate Claire immediately.””
I looked at Patricia.
“Why did you help her?””
Patricia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I thought I was helping Rachel.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were helping yourself.””
She looked hurt.
But she didn’t deny it.
Then suddenly, Ava spoke.
“Can I ask something?””
Everyone turned.
She looked at Patricia.
“Did my mom know?””
The question was simple.
But it carried years of pain.
“Did my mom know people were trying to take me away from my dad?””
Patricia’s face broke.
“She knew some of it.””
Ava’s eyes filled with tears.
“Was she scared?””
Patricia nodded.
“Yes.””
That answer hurt.
But then Patricia said something unexpected.
“She was scared because she knew you would lose people you loved.””
Ava looked confused.
“What?””
Patricia looked at her.
“Your mother didn’t want you growing up believing everyone around you was dangerous.””
She wiped her eyes.
“She wanted you to remember love, not betrayal.””
The room became quiet.
Because for the first time, Patricia wasn’t defending herself.
She was finally telling the truth.
Officer Collins’s radio suddenly crackled.
“Update.””
Everyone turned.
The dispatcher spoke.
“We located Claire Williams.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then:
“She is currently at the courthouse.””
Officer Collins frowned.
“Why?””
The dispatcher answered.
“She filed an emergency request this morning.””
My blood ran cold.
“Request for what?””
The dispatcher paused.
Then said:
“Temporary guardianship of Ava Williams.””
The room exploded into silence.
Ava grabbed my arm.
“Daddy?””
I held her close.
“I’m here.””
But inside, I felt something break.
Because while we were standing there uncovering the truth…
someone else had already started the next battle.
May you like
And this time…
they were trying to take my daughter legally.
