Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Old Letters
The young man’s words stayed in the room long after he said them.
“The person who really wanted Marcus Williams separated from his daughter… is someone much closer to this family than you think.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed normally.
Officer Collins looked at him carefully.
“Sir, I need you to explain exactly what you mean.””
The young man glanced at Patricia.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Terrified.
That told me more than any confession could.
The man swallowed.
“My name is Daniel Price.””
Officer Ramirez nodded.
“Okay, Daniel. How are you connected to this situation?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I’m Patricia’s grandson.””
A wave of surprise moved through the room.
Patricia immediately stood up.
“Daniel, stop.””
But he didn’t listen.
“I should have said something earlier.””
“Earlier about what?”” Officer Collins asked.
Daniel looked at me.
And I saw regret in his eyes.
“I knew my grandmother was making those calls.””
My stomach dropped.
Ava held onto my hand tighter.
“You knew?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I didn’t know how far she would take it.””
My voice became quiet.
“How long?””
Daniel looked down.
“How long did she watch us?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
Officer Collins stepped closer.
“Daniel, we need details.””
The young man rubbed his hands nervously.
“My grandmother started asking questions about Marcus and Ava years ago.””
“Why?”” Officer Ramirez asked.
Daniel looked at Patricia.
“She believed Marcus wasn’t the right person to raise Ava.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“But why?””
Daniel was silent.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“Because of Rachel.””
The room became still.
My wife’s name.
A name I had not heard spoken by anyone except myself and Ava in years.
“What about Rachel?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“My grandmother and Rachel had a history.””
Patricia closed her eyes.
“Daniel.””
But he continued.
“They weren’t just coworkers.””
Officer Collins turned toward Patricia.
“What does that mean?””
Patricia looked away.
For years, she had built herself as the victim.
The concerned neighbor.
The person who was simply trying to help.
But now, the cracks were showing.
“She was my friend,” Patricia finally said.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was softer.
“She was your best friend.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt like the ground beneath me had shifted.
Rachel had always told me she had a few close friends from work.
But Patricia Miller?
Never.
Not once.
“Why didn’t Rachel ever mention you?”” I asked.
Patricia’s eyes moved toward me.
“Because she was angry with me.””
“Why?””
Her face tightened.
“Because I made a mistake.””
Ava looked confused.
“What mistake?””
The question came from my daughter.
And Patricia looked at her.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
“I hurt your mother.””
Ava looked at me.
I didn’t know what to say.
Because I didn’t know the truth either.
Officer Collins crossed his arms.
“Ms. Miller, you need to explain.””
Patricia sat down slowly.
“When Rachel got pregnant, she was scared.””
My heart tightened.
“She was afraid she wouldn’t be a good mother.””
I looked at Ava.
That sounded impossible.
Rachel had loved this child more than anything.
“She told me she wanted to make sure Ava would always be protected,” Patricia continued.
“And you thought that meant you should take her away from me?”” I asked.
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
Almost too quickly.
“Then what?””
Patricia looked down.
“I thought I was helping.””
Nobody believed that.
Not anymore.
Daniel stepped forward.
“She didn’t just think that.””
Patricia looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“She convinced herself that Rachel made a mistake.””
The room went silent.
Officer Ramirez looked at Patricia.
“You believed Mr. Williams was not fit to raise his own daughter?””
Patricia shook her head.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
She looked at me.
And the answer finally came.
“I thought Rachel chose you because she was afraid.””
My jaw tightened.
“She chose me because she loved me.””
Patricia looked away.
“She was vulnerable after Ava was born. She needed someone strong.””
“And you decided I wasn’t that person?””
Patricia didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The pain wasn’t from the police anymore.
It was from realizing someone had spent years rewriting my family’s story.
Daniel reached into his jacket pocket.
“I brought something.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
The edges were yellow.
“I found this in my grandmother’s things.””
Patricia immediately stood.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I should have given it to him years ago.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Given me what?””
Daniel walked toward me.
“It’s from Rachel.””
The world seemed to stop.
A letter.
From my wife.
After all these years.
I reached for it.
But before my fingers touched the envelope, Patricia spoke.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at her.
“What don’t I understand?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The letter wasn’t supposed to reach you.””
The room froze.
Officer Collins immediately looked at her.
“Why?””
Patricia said nothing.
Daniel answered for her.
“Because my grandmother hid it.””
My hands tightened around the envelope.
A letter from my wife.
A letter someone had kept from me.
For years.
Officer Ramirez looked at Patricia.
“Did you know what was inside?””
Patricia’s silence answered.
I stared at the envelope.
Rachel’s handwriting was visible on the front.
My name.
Written by the woman I lost.
And suddenly, the question was no longer why Patricia called the police.
May you like
The question was…
what was written in that letter that someone was desperate to keep hidden?
