Chapter 8: The Person Nobody Expected

I stared at the photograph.

I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

Rachel was smiling.

Ava was a baby in her arms.

And standing beside them was someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been part of my life for years.

“Marcus?””

Officer Collins’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

“What?””

He noticed my expression.

“Do you know who that is?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because the person in the photo wasn’t a stranger.

It was my older brother, Anthony.

My own brother.

The man who had stood beside me at Rachel’s funeral.

The man who had held Ava when she was born.

The man who always told me, “You and that little girl are everything Rachel wanted.””

My hands trembled.

“Why is Anthony with them?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel quietly said:

“Because he was part of the secret.””

I turned toward him.

“What secret?””

Daniel looked at Patricia.

She looked defeated.

“He knew.””

My heart sank.

“Knew what?””

Patricia whispered:

“He knew Rachel wanted you to have that letter.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

No answer.

The anger came slowly.

Not explosive.

Not loud.

Just a deep pain.

Because betrayal from strangers hurts.

But betrayal from family cuts differently.

Officer Ramirez looked at the photograph.

“Do you know where Anthony is now?””

I shook my head.

“He lives two towns away.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“My grandmother talked to him.””

“When?””

“Recently.””

I looked at Patricia.

“You contacted my brother?””

She didn’t deny it.

“I needed someone who understood.””

“Understood what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“That Rachel was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“No. Rachel was afraid of people like you.””

Patricia looked down.

The sentence hurt because everyone knew it was true.

Officer Collins picked up his radio.

“We need to locate Anthony Williams for questioning.””

I looked at Ava.

I didn’t want her hearing any more.

But she was already carrying too much.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“Did Uncle Anthony know about Mom’s letter?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because the honest answer was worse.

“Yes.””

Her face fell.

“But he didn’t tell us?””

I knelt beside her.

“I don’t know why.””

She looked down.

“That’s not fair.””

No.

It wasn’t.

A few minutes later, my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Anthony.

Everyone noticed.

Officer Collins gestured.

“Answer it.””

I hesitated.

Then I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then Anthony spoke.

“Marcus.””

His voice sounded tired.

“You found out.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Another pause.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Protect me?””

My voice rose.

“You let me stand there while police asked if my own daughter belonged to me.””

Anthony sighed.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

I looked at Ava.

“Do you know what that did to her?””

Silence.

Then Anthony said:

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

The word felt too small.

“You hid my wife’s final message.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

His answer came quietly.

“Of what Rachel wrote.””

Everyone in the room listened.

Even the officers.

I gripped the phone.

“What did she write?””

Anthony didn’t answer.

“Anthony.””

Finally, he whispered:

“She said if anything happened to her, there was something you needed to know about Ava.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at my daughter.

“What about Ava?””

Anthony’s voice cracked.

“Marcus…”

“Tell me.””

A long silence.

Then he said:

“Rachel discovered someone had been trying to change Ava’s records before she died.””

My blood went cold.

“What records?””

“Her family records.””

The room went silent.

Officer Collins immediately stepped closer.

Anthony continued.

“Rachel thought someone was trying to create a legal argument that you were not her father.””

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“Who?””

Anthony didn’t answer.

“Who was it?””

Then his voice became barely audible.

“Marcus…”

A pause.

“It wasn’t Patricia who started this.””

I looked toward the white house.

The same house that had hidden so many secrets.

Anthony continued:

“The person behind it all…”

Another pause.

“…was someone Rachel trusted more than anyone.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

And then Anthony said the name.

May you like

A name that made every person in the room freeze.

Because it was the one person I never imagined would betray us.
