Chapter 6: Rachel’s Final Message
I held the envelope in my hands for several seconds.
I couldn’t open it.
Not because I didn’t want to.
Because I was afraid.
A piece of paper could change everything.
It could bring back memories I had spent years trying to survive.
It could answer questions I never stopped asking.
Why did Rachel seem worried near the end?
Why did she keep looking at Ava while holding back tears?
Why did she once tell me, “Promise me you’ll never let anyone make you doubt that you’re her father”?
At the time, I thought it was just a scared mother preparing for the future.
Now I wondered if she knew something I didn’t.
Officer Collins spoke gently.
“Mr. Williams, you don’t have to open that here.””
I looked at the letter.
Then at Ava.
My daughter was watching me.
Waiting.
I sat down beside her.
“Your mom wrote this.””
Ava’s eyes widened.
“For me?””
I nodded.
“She wrote it for both of us.””
She touched the corner of the envelope carefully.
Like it was something fragile.
Patricia watched from across the room.
And for the first time, she looked like she was afraid of what was inside.
That made my decision.
I opened it.
The paper inside was folded carefully.
Rachel’s handwriting immediately brought back a thousand memories.
Her laugh.
Her voice.
The way she used to leave little notes in my lunch bag.
I took a breath and started reading.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, something happened that stopped me from telling you everything myself.
My hands froze.
I looked up.
Everyone noticed.
Officer Collins leaned forward slightly.
I continued.
First, I need you to know something important. You are Ava’s father in every way that matters. You have been since the first moment you held her.
Ava smiled faintly.
Tears rolled down my face.
I kept reading.
But I need to tell you about Patricia.
The room became silent.
Patricia looked down.
Patricia loved me like a sister once. But after Ava was born, something changed.
I swallowed.
She became convinced that because Ava and you did not look exactly alike, people would question your family.
My heart sank.
At first, I thought she was only worried. Then her questions became accusations.
Officer Ramirez looked toward Patricia.
I continued.
She asked me things no friend should ask.
She asked whether Marcus was truly Ava’s father.
Ava’s face changed.
I immediately pulled her closer.
“No matter what,” I whispered.
She nodded.
I kept reading.
I told her the truth. I told her Ava was yours. I told her you were the best father I had ever seen.
A tear fell onto the paper.
But Patricia couldn’t accept that.
The room remained silent.
Marcus, if anyone ever tries to make you prove your love for Ava, remember this: DNA can prove biology. But it cannot measure ten thousand bedtime stories, scraped knees, school mornings, and the way you always make her feel safe.
I stopped.
I couldn’t continue for a moment.
Because those words were exactly what I needed to hear.
Then I read the final paragraph.
There is one more thing you need to know.
My heart started racing.
Before I got sick, Patricia told me she knew someone who could take care of Ava if anything happened to me.
I looked up.
Patricia’s face had gone pale.
I refused. Because Ava already had someone who loved her more than anything.
The room was completely silent.
Then the final sentence appeared.
Marcus, if Patricia ever comes near Ava with this story again, ask her why she kept the truth hidden for so long.
I lowered the letter.
Everyone looked at Patricia.
Officer Collins spoke quietly.
“Ms. Miller…”
Patricia looked overwhelmed.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“No,” Daniel said.
His voice was full of disappointment.
“You were trying to control the story.””
Patricia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I loved Rachel.””
“But you hurt the people she loved most,” Daniel replied.
Ava looked at Patricia.
“Why did you call the police?””
The question broke something in the room.
Because it came from a child.
A child who deserved an honest answer.
Patricia looked at her.
And finally admitted:
“Because I thought if they questioned you enough… you would eventually leave with me.””
Everyone froze.
Officer Collins immediately stepped forward.
“Leave with you?””
Patricia covered her mouth.
Realizing what she had said.
The truth had finally come out.
This was never just about a phone call.
It was never just about a concern.
Patricia had a plan.
A plan that had been hidden for years.
Officer Ramirez looked toward the officers outside.
“Document everything.””
Then he turned back.
“Ms. Miller, we need to talk about why you believed you had any right to separate a child from her father.””
But before Patricia could answer…
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He hesitated.
Then slowly turned the phone around.
“It’s my mother.””
Everyone stared.
“Why is she calling you right now?””
Daniel answered.
And the moment he said hello, Patricia’s expression changed.
Because the voice on the other end wasn’t asking for help.
It was warning him.

And everyone in the room heard the same terrified words:
“Daniel… you weren’t supposed to tell him about the other secret.””
