Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

My father.

Robert.

Elias Wallace.

Standing together.

Alive.

The date written on the back felt impossible.

My fingers tightened around the picture.

“This can’t be real.””

Nobody spoke.

That was the worst part.

If Robert had laughed, if Clara had told me it was a mistake, if someone had immediately denied it, maybe I could have held onto the life I understood.

But they didn’t.

They looked at me like they had been carrying this secret for years.

I turned toward Robert.

“You knew.””

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Pain.

“Rose.””

“You knew my father was alive?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

I searched his eyes.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is there a picture of you with him?””

Robert took the photograph from my hand carefully.

He looked at it for a long time.

“I’ve never seen this before.””

Clara stepped forward.

“That’s why I brought it.””

Robert looked at her.

“You found this where?””

“In Thomas Vail’s house.””

The wind moved around us.

The entire world felt unstable.

My father had been gone for years.

I had buried him.

I had cried over an empty grave.

And now I was holding proof that something about his death had been hidden from me.

“Who took this picture?””

Clara shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Robert looked at the back again.

“This date…”

His voice faded.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“It was taken after the night your father supposedly died.””

My chest tightened.

“Supposedly?””

Robert looked away.

The word had slipped out.

And now it was too late.

I stepped closer.

“Robert.””

He closed his eyes briefly.

Then he spoke.

“Your father didn’t die in an accident.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I felt like the ground moved beneath me.

“What are you saying?””

Robert looked at Clara.

Then back at me.

“I’m saying someone wanted everyone to believe he was gone.””

My voice became a whisper.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

But I already knew.

“Elias.””

Robert didn’t deny it.

That was enough.

I walked away from them.

I needed air.

I needed distance.

I needed five minutes where my entire life was not falling apart.

But there was nowhere to go.

Every road seemed connected to a secret.

Every person seemed to know something I didn’t.

I returned to the ranch before sunset.

Robert followed silently.

For the first time since arriving, I did not feel like a guest.

I felt like a prisoner inside a story I never agreed to enter.

That night, Robert found me sitting on the porch.

The same porch where I had first arrived believing I was only searching for work.

“You should sleep.””

I didn’t look at him.

“I don’t think I can.””

He sat beside me.

Not too close.

Giving me space.

“My father died believing he failed me.””

Robert looked ahead.

“Your father died trying to protect you.””

I swallowed.

“You don’t know that.””

“Yes, I do.””

“How?””

Robert reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your father gave it to me.””

“When?””

“Five years ago.””

I stood.

“You had another letter?””

Robert looked down.

“I kept it because I was waiting for the right time.””

My anger returned.

“The right time?””

“Yes.””

“Robert, my whole life changed because people kept deciding when I deserved the truth.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I continued.

“What does it say?””

Robert handed it to me.

The envelope was old.

My father’s handwriting was on the front.

Rose.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was only one page.

My dear Rose,

If you are reading this, then Robert finally decided you were strong enough to know.

I stopped.

My eyes moved to Robert.

He looked away.

I continued.

There are people who will tell you I betrayed you. There are people who will tell you I ran away. Do not believe them.

I made a choice to protect you.

Elias Wallace knows about the documents hidden in our family records. He knows about the land. He knows about the evidence.

But he does not know where I placed the final proof.

My breathing became uneven.

Final proof?

The letter continued.

Robert Kendrick is the only person I trusted with this information because he understands what it means to lose everything.

If you found him, then you are safer than you think.

But be careful.

The person closest to Elias is not who you expect.

I lowered the letter.

“The person closest to Elias…”

Robert nodded slowly.

“My father suspected someone was helping him.””

“Who?””

Before Robert could answer, the sound of breaking glass came from inside the house.

We both stood.

Robert moved instantly.

“Stay behind me.””

We rushed inside.

The kitchen window was shattered.

Cold air moved through the room.

On the table was a small wooden box.

Robert had never seen it before.

I knew because his face changed.

“What is that?””

He walked closer.

A note was attached.

Rose Hartley.

My blood ran cold.

Robert removed the note.

He opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

The color had disappeared from his face.

“Your father’s final message.””

“What?””

Robert handed me the paper.

Three words were written.

Not a warning.

Not a name.

Just three words.

THE TRUTH LIVES BELOW.

I looked at Robert.

“Below what?””

He stared toward the floor.

May you like

Then slowly whispered:

“The old Kendrick mine.””
