Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath The Silence

I left the records office without saying a word.

Robert followed behind me.

“Rose.””

I kept walking.

“Rose, wait.””

I stopped near the edge of town.

The same street where I had asked him to marry me.

The same place where everyone had watched me make the most impossible decision of my life.

Now I wondered if I had made the wrong one.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Robert stopped several feet away.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I laughed softly.

“Exactly.””

“Rose.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You told me everyone lies about you. You told me people create stories. But you never told me the part where the story might be true.””

His face tightened.

“I never killed Thomas Vail.””

“I didn’t ask that.””

The words surprised him.

I stepped closer.

“I asked why you hid the truth.””

Robert was silent.

Then he said:

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer caught me off guard.

“You?””

“Yes.””

The strongest man in Twin Falls looked down.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

“I was afraid that if you knew everything, you would see me the way everyone else does.””

I studied him.

“Then tell me everything.””

For a long moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then he nodded.

“Five years ago, Thomas Vail came to my ranch.””

The street around us seemed to disappear.

“He wasn’t alone.””

“Who was with him?””

“Elias Wallace.””

My stomach tightened.

“They wanted my land.””

Robert continued.

“My father had left me a valuable property. They knew if they could force me into debt, they could take it.””

“What happened that night?””

Robert looked toward the hills.

“They came with papers.””

“Fake papers?””

“Yes.””

“And you refused?””

“I did.””

His voice became lower.

“Thomas attacked me.””

I saw his hand move toward the scar near his thumb.

“He had a knife.””

I held my breath.

“What did you do?””

“I defended myself.””

“And Thomas?””

“He ran.””

“Where?””

Robert looked at me.

“That’s the part nobody believes.””

“Why?””

“Because when the sheriff arrived, Thomas was gone.””

I remembered the newspaper.

The blood.

The rumors.

“What happened to the blood?””

Robert looked away.

“I was injured.””

Realization hit me.

“Your blood.””

He nodded.

“The story became easier when people thought it belonged to him.””

I was quiet.

“Then why didn’t you explain?””

Robert smiled sadly.

“Because Elias had already convinced everyone I was dangerous.””

He paused.

“And then Thomas disappeared.””

The pieces finally started fitting together.

But one question remained.

“Where is Thomas now?””

Robert’s expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

Before I could respond, a voice came from behind us.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

We turned.

Clara stood there.

Her face was serious.

For the first time, she looked nothing like the confident woman who visited the ranch.

“What are you doing here?”” Robert asked.

“I’m tired of watching you carry this alone.””

Robert’s eyes narrowed.

“Clara.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“She deserves the truth.””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Clara took a breath.

“Thomas Vail didn’t disappear.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Clara.””

“He was paid to leave.””

My heart stopped.

“By who?””

Clara looked directly at me.

“Elias Wallace.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

“Then why did everyone think Robert was responsible?””

“Because Elias needed someone to blame.””

Robert looked angry.

“Enough.””

Clara shook her head.

“No, Robert. She needs to know why.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Clara’s voice softened.

“Because Thomas wasn’t just after land.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What else?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“He was after something your father had hidden.””

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Clara looked at Robert.

He didn’t speak.

That frightened me.

“What did my father hide?””

Clara reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.

She handed it to me.

“I found this inside Thomas Vail’s abandoned house.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

I looked at it.

Then froze.

It showed my father standing beside Robert.

And beside them…

Was a third person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should never have been there.

Elias Wallace.

But that wasn’t the shocking part.

The shocking part was the date written on the back.

A date two years after my father was supposedly dead.

I looked up slowly.

“My father was alive.””

Nobody answered.

Because they already knew.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

My father’s death was not the beginning of the mystery.

It was the lie that started everything.
